Is Etheridge In Trouble?
Real Clear Politics ^ | 6/15/10 | Sean Trende

Posted on 06/15/2010 6:24:11 AM PDT by DM1

...... So how vulnerable does this make Etheridge? We at RealClearPolitics currently have the race rated as Likely Democrat. ....

Etheridge is also doing well in the fundraising race. According the the FEC he has over $1 million cash on hand; his opponent, Renee Ellmers, has $5,462. In addition, Ellmers isn't exactly a typical high-quality candidate: She's a nurse and county Chamber of Commerce President.

But there are some countervailing pressures on Etheridge. Ellmers will almost certainly improve her fundraising based upon this viral video, and may be able to put together a more competitive race.

More to the point, Etheridge has generally thrived in the district by compiling a centrist voting record. This has placed him more in line with the state Democrats, who perform well in the district, than with the national Democrats, whose track record is more problematic.

This time around, however, Etheridge has generally voted the national Democratic line. He voted for the stimulus package, for "cap and trade" legislation, and for the healthcare bill (which one pollster found only 37% of Etheridge's constituents favored and 53% opposed). This was probably prompted in part by the weakness of his opponent. But if the cash flows into Ellmers' coffers, this could prove to be a miscalculation on Etheridge's part.

The district's fundamentals and Etheridge's fundraising advantage still give him a significant advantage in the fall. But now there is a pretty clear scenario to see how he loses. This really was somewhere in between "safe" and "likely" Democrat before; it is now probably somewhere between "likely" and "leans" Democrat. Hopefully we'll get some polling soon to better sort this out; if not, we'll have some updated financial information in about a month.

I agree with you, I also found it quite disturbing that his first thought was to get these students names and where they went to school so that he could use his power to destroy them. They were smart to smear their faces in the video.

Imagine, a NURSE having the temerity to run for Congress. I guess the fact that she’s a Chamber of Commerce president just goes to prove she’s a tool of big business. Those folks are SO lucky to have Eldridge as their Congressperson. And, they just love his special hugs.

Same here, actually. I’ve already contributed to her campaign and will likely contribute more as paychecks come in.

Etheridge is a bully and a sissy.

Simple ass kicking would make an attitude adjustment.

Not that this matters, but she's a lot better looking than Ethereidge...

Those are SEIU cops.

As a nurse myself, I find this line insulting. Is the author inferring that the candidate is somehow less qualified because she’s not a career politician or a lawyer?? This government needs some “average” citizens as representatives who can restore common sense & insight to our legislature. I for one will be sending this woman some cash.

Mark Levin said last night that he’d get her on his show. Let’s hope she handles herself well.

In a sane world, Etheridge would be in jail for assault, but if you’re a Democrat, it doesn’t work that way.

"Perhaps that she isn’t politically connected. "

WTH does that mean? She's not a lawyer"? Good, there's absolutely too damn many lawyers in Congress now.

She doesn't have cronies to pull strings and lie for her?

Maybe it's her bloodline, not enough blue blood for you?

I thought the House and Senate was to be made up of people who REPRESENT the people...not professional politicians.

I find that premise highly elitist and not in keeping with the spirit of America.

If Etheredge is your guy, then so be it, but don't be slamming honest, hardworking Americas who have the courage to try to step up to the plate for our country.

I would hardly think she would ever assault a college student.

Would be shocked if this guy loses. I live in the district right next door and for whatever reason, they keep voting him in. Got into an argument at the ice cream store last night with a 60 year old guy saying that he was set up and goated into it. UUUUGH.....Idiots....If they left off Durham County out of that district, she WOULD win....

If the students do press civil or the DC attorneys press criminal assault charges, he could really be in trouble. Hopefully Breibart will help these convince these kids to perform their civic duty and take down this idiot. However, it does seem obvious that these students wanted to remain anonymous as evidenced by their reluctance to give their names during the assault and the fact that their faces were obscured during the video.

I agree.

Michael Smerconish played that “experience” card this morning - about whether or not John Runyon's NFL experience is enough to “qualify” him for the House of Reps - when he (Smerconish) was openly sucking up to John Adler. He pitched Adler a softball premise that Adler answered with standard Dem pablum about extreme right vs. moderate centrist nonsense.

Adler's a Democrat who claims to be a “Centrist”, but his first official act was to vote yes on Pelosi as Speaker, and he voted the Democratic party line about 84% of the time.

Their district went overwhelmingly Christie, so it should be interesting.
