Former presidential candidate McCain battling for his political life against GOP conservative

A serious re-election fight wasn't what Republican John McCain expected when he returned to the Senate after losing the presidency.

But the four-term senator is battling for his political life in a race that embodies the volatility of an unpredictable election year. He's facing former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, a fellow Republican pushing him farther to the right as GOP voters demand conservative purity in their candidates and punish those with ties to the Washington establishment.

Two longtime Senate incumbents have fallen —

If you disagree with McCain, fine, but don’t slander him as a treasonous bastard or traitor or Democrat mole (see most of rabscuttles’s post).

The phrase "treasonous bastard" is not mine. It's Jim Robinson's.

Some of you people are beyond help. Need I remind you that less than two years ago, conservatives voted for John McCain for president? Now he’s the devil incarnate? That’s really hypocritical.

Did you REALLY expect us to vote for obama ?

You are an idiot stick. You don’t bother to listen to anyone else. You don’t bother to read what has been documented. You just continue to spew. How old are you, sixteen?

Where’s your list of things J.D. Hayworth has done wrong. Lay it on us genius.

McCain is simply the better candidate.

You mean like how Crist was the "better candidate"?

Or how about Dede Scozzafava?

Or Trey Grayson?

Or maybe one Arlen Specter, the disgraced former RINO who was endorsed and supported by the RINO George W. Bush and one Rick Santorum?

You may be willing and eager to guzzle the RINO Kool-Aid, but many of us conservatives aren't. Not any more, at least.

As the Chairman of the Arizona 2010 Project we are sponsoring a statewide US Senate Debate between McCain and JD Hayworth. McCain will not confirm a date, saying he is busy every date we have offered him. Other organization have offered the to hold debates but McCain has refused them as well. JD has agreed to every date we have offered. MCCAIN simply will NOT debate JD and that is a loss for the people of Arizona. Shame on Senator McCain for careing less about the Arizona voters.

With McInsane outspending JD by about a thousand to one, it’s amazing that JD is giving him such a run for his money. Time to send JD some more $$, even though I’ll be shocked if he can pull off a win.

.................The man has a long service record for our nation and is indeed a true American hero...............

Yes he had a long service record and went through very trying times as a POW. However he has been a terrible Senator, he gets worse every year.

McCain never fought this hard against 0bama, in fact McCain has always reserved his nastiest venom for conservatives

That's so true, and I want to vomit when I see his ads come on. His staff has always been extremely nasty too (yes, I am polite when I call) and I think that speaks volumes about that traitor.

Come on Rabs, vote for Obama-lite, the candidate with 5% less calories. You know you want to..

Blah!!!!!

Hmmm, 95% fewer calories or 5% fewer calories, which is it to be? Oh I’m so confused. Help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.

My savior Sarah has said 95%, how can I betray her? Oh what am I to do?

If I didn’t vote for who she said to vote for, it would be a betrayal. And despite what everyone else says, it’s not a betrayal of me, “A solid Conservative” for her to tell me I need to vote for Mr. 95%.

We’ll need a crow-bar and the Jaws of Death to pry these folks away from McCain and this battered (political) wife of his.

McCain hates conservatives so much that he would prefer to see a 'Rat take his senate seat, than to see Hayworth win. Believe that.

That is completely true. We saw that happen in CD8 (part of Southern Arizona) in 2006. Jim Kolbe had been entrenched for over 20 years and because it looked bleak for him, he pulled out. Well, lo and behold, he showed up to celebrate the Dem's win (after he and the local GOP did everything they could to sabotage Randy Graf, including incessantly lying about him and smearing him).

Did Sarah and Fred endorse Crist? How about Scozzafava? Greyson? You are so eager to intoxicate yourself with the 1-percenter tonic that you would bad-mouth good people to get your way, and help the Dims.

If Hayworth really had the support of Arizona Republicans, he would have millions to spend just like John McCain. You can try to twist it all you want, but the fact is most Republicans support McCain.

It's almost like the common man going up against George Soros and his billions.

It's an open primary, as others have noted, and Dems and independents have made sure to vote for McC in the past. Including the Dem quoted in this article.

No, but I don’t expect conservatives to vote for a “treasonous bastard”, a “Democrat mole”, or a “traitor” either.

I can see why you use the pseudonym ‘Dream Warrior’ thinking McCain would actually debate...

Just jesting, we both know what the odds of that are.

I’ll never understand these Palin apologists and McCain supporters.

Your candidate likes about 95% of the same policies Barak Obama pushes.
Your candidate actually said, “You have nothing to fear from an Obama presidency.”
Your candidate has a history that looks for all the world like Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, or Bawney Frank, and yet he claims to be a Republican.
Election time comes around, and a candidate that disagrees with Obama about 95% of the time wants to debate, and your candidate is afraid to.

Aren’t you proud!!!

And yet you voted for that candidate two years ago. And you will support him when he wins the GOP nomination again, right?

We have open primaries here too.

It's pretty dumb, allowing big time shenanigans from the left.

I remember in the year 2000 primary, there were radio ads from Jeoffrey Fieger (waaaaay leftie democrat) asking democrats to register R and vote for McCain.

Looks like they're doing it again for you......

I expect it in 2012 if Bambi runs unopposed.

Well, I guess conservatives could always run a Democratic candidate to keep some of those voters from interfering. Better yet, you could have changed the election rules. You’ve had a year and a half to get it done. Why haven’t you?
