Microsoft: Years from Now The Majority of Tablets Will Use Windows.

A high-ranking executive of Microsoft Corp. said that while there are makers, who decided to use Google Android operating system on their tablets, which are to be unveiled during Computex Taipei 2010 trade-show, in the long-term Windows operating system will still be more popular on desktops, notebooks and slates.

“There are always lots of noises at the beginning of new category. When netbooks were introduced three years ago, it was 95% not on Windows, and three years later it is 95% on Windows,” Steve Guggenheimer, a corporate vice president who oversees Microsoft's relationships with PC makers and other hardware companies, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

In fact, Microsoft helped tablet PCs to become valuable tools for professionals many years ago. However, Microsoft and its partners have not managed to drive tablets to the mainstream market, partly because clients did not need them, partly because there was a lack of infrastructure to consumer content on them.

At present developers of slates are focused around creation of services that allow to buy/download new content or software onto slates, whereas Microsoft still has to rely on its traditional Windows-based infrastructure, which is sometimes an overkill for solving simple problems. Moreover, there are a lot of makers, including Acer, Dell, HP and others, who decided to use Android instead of Windows since the latter did not support ARM processors, which are more energy-efficient than traditional x86 chips, yet, cannot deliver comparable performance.

But the hardware and software world is not stagnating. Next year Advanced Micro Devices plans to release x86 chips for tablets that integrate DirectX 11-class graphics along with mainstream microprocessor performance.

Well he'd say that wouldn't he? It's his job.
What he fails to mention is, Microsoft swiftly overtook Linux and dominated the netbooks market because Microsoft decided to sell Windows XP to OEM’s for only $15.
Unless Microsoft can bring out a special version of Win 7 for tablets at a lower price, they are going to get a very tough fight from Android, which is free, and tablets are kinda halfway between smart phones and desktops.

And what makes you think they won’t do that?

In doing so he trashes future blessings for the country he is leading off the cliff. Forgive the double negative.

Doesn’t it look a little pathetic for Microsoft to say stuff like this, if it truly believes it? If you’re number one, why bother?

Flash not being a big deal to me, Microsoft is going to have a damned hard time getting me to come it’s direction rather than iPad’s. I’m not a Mac fan, don’t own one, and have had the smart phones for some time, prior to the latest releases.

I’m already using my iPhone for a lot of stuff I used to use my laptop for. I’ve only had it about three months. Now I just move files to the laptop after I’ve developed them on the iPhone. That’s only going to accelerate when I have the iPad later this year.

I am perfectly happy to see people using Microsoft’s product. The advertising I’ve see pushing iPhone and iPad tout the things you can do with them. I don’t see Apple out there trashing smart phones, unless my memory is being overly selective right now.

Microsoft, buck up.

I don't know if they will or they won't.
So far all the Windows 7 tablets shown at Computex, Taiwan, are using the normal Windows 7 we know. We'll see I guess.

Wow! That means that in "years from now" those devices will have some truely large memories! Its the only way MicroBloat could work in anything.

They sure do need a lot of code. I'd love to be able to remove everything I don't want or need. (Most of it.)

Well netbooks now have 2GB-4GB memory already, and some are selling for as low as under $200.
Next month, Intel is bringing out a dual core Atom processor for netbooks. Those can be used for tablets as well.
So the processing power and the RAM to run Win 7 on tablets is already there, at very low prices too.
All the top netboook makers (Acer, Asus, MSI) are all binging out Win 7 tablets which they already displayed at Computex (Taiwan), just yesterday.

The same job could be accomplished with much less software. Most Microsoft software serves only Microsoft or the "Oh, wouldn't it be cool if" croud. Most of the "cool" stuff is not needed, even in the slightest, for most applications.

The bloatware doesn't really do anything important that 3.11 didn't.

Nobody buys Windows 7 laptops because “it's cool”. We buy Windows 7 computers because Win 7 is a great OS, and we can get a very full featured Win 7 latop for peanuts, and Win 7 runs vastly more applications than any other OS on the planet, and runs all the AAA games (MW2, Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2 etc), and it will run all your previous programs from your last laptop too.

What you say is basically true, but let me try to condense it a little:

Windows is the default workhorse for people who use full-size keyboards and mice, who sit at desks all day and/or all night. It's a majority market at present.
The small / portable devices are not a useful platform for Win7 -- but who cares? Windows shouldn't be trying to squeeze itself onto such platforms. It's silly. It's a perfectly fine desktop OS, and a satisfactory laptop OS. It is not all things to all devices, however, and Microsoft looks stupid if they pretend that it should be everywhere. (And yes I know about WinCE and so forth...)

If Microsoft squeezes Windows into a tablet and makes it useful, it will no longer be Windows as we know it, even if it retains the name.

But Windows 7 was designed from the ground up for touch screen tablet computers.

A Ford Pinto with a big engine is still a Ford Pinto...

Windoze is sorta the same thing.. pig/lipstick!

You can put Windoze on a tablet, but it still won't be as good as Apple's iPad. The App store and ease of use make it a winner. Apple stock is trading above $260 these days! Apple company is worth more than your sucky Microcrap.

Have a nice day, Joe. Smoke some more of that stuff. It makes your posts funnier! Be sure and make a snarky reply. I wouldn't want to miss your wit...

You again?
Come back for even more punishment after the ass whupping I gave ya last time?
Fine by me clown face.
Reality: Windows 7 is at the very least as good, if not better than Snow Leopard, in any way you care to mention, that's why it sold a missive 100 million units in just 2 months. Apple hasn't even sold that many macs in the last 10 years!

“You can put Windoze on a tablet, but it still won't be as good as Apple's iPad. “

These Windows 7 tablets can already do a heck of a lot more than your no USB, No multitasking, no Flash, buggy Wi-Fi iPad.
Win7 is an excellent musltitasker, the wifi works great, and the Win 7 tabelts have USB and webcams!
And oh, did I say Win 7 already has a million programs?

The App store and ease of use make it a winner”

Win 7 = over 1 million apps. Umm..how many apps does your little iPad have again?

Apple stock is trading above $260 these days! “

And Microsoft still makes more profits than Apple does, and Gates is still far richer than Steve Jobs is.
Chortle!

I have a Droid phone, and I like it. I’d like to see how a tablet performs with Android.

Ummm, yeah, I know about that (I have MSDN). But you seem to forget that Windows 7 is just Vista-Done-Right, NT6.1, not a new design from the ground up. And the multi-touch was added as an afterthought:

"...In recent years, we [Microsoft] have witnessed a wide range of multitouch devices that have generated an extremely positive user experience. Therefore, it is only natural for Windows to introduce such multitouch support in Windows 7..."
Translation: We saw other folks with a shiny new toy, so we're copying it.

> Remember, this was long before the iPad even came on the scene.

Umm, Joe:

MSDN Magazine > Issues > 2009 > August 2009 Issue > MultiTouch Capabilities in Windows 7...
"This article is based on a pre-release version of Windows 7. Details are subject to change..."
Screw the iPad -- the iPhone introduced multitouch in 2007. That was a long time before Aug 2009. Of course, multitouch was being developed long before the iPhone (sorry, Steve Jobs, it wasn't your invention).

Anyway, Joe, you're stretching. Don't try to cram Win7 onto a handheld device, it'll suck. But you can be happy that Win7 is a great desktop OS. There are a ton of desktops out there, and they'll be there for a good long time.

Nope.
Translation, Windows tablets have been on the market for years (long before the iPad or even the iPhone).

Ummm.. the super advanced Microsoft Surface Computer, which has touch screen technology that totally trumps anything that the iPhone has, started development work as long ago as 2001, and was first shown to the public in 2007.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Surface

Don't try to cram Win7 onto a handheld device, it'll suck. “

Nonsense.
Some 12” screen tablets are even bigger than some netbooks. Microsoft designed Win 7 for both tablets AND netbooks. Windows 7 has been happily running very well on some netbooks without any problems. Win 7 will run fine on the rather great looking new tablets they just announced at Computex.
