Skandi I has some extremely good closeup shots of the Cut on right now .. they are right on top of the stack.

They are sawing the corners of the crimp off.

Thanks, I just saw an article on Drudge with a picture of a what looked like a jagged edge at a distance. But if you look at the very close up of the other end that Viking 1 showed you see a pretty darn clean cut. I think some of what they're thinking is jagged edge is really puffs of oil streaming over the edge. Besides the seal will seal below the diamond saw cut which is way below the "irregular" cut.

Look for this administration and the MSM to make light of what happened today. They're going after our heroes and we need to put a stop to it...

Skandi I is sawing away at the cut right now — looks like they are attempting to smooth the cut some to get a better seal. Using the circular saw we have seen multiple times.

No way. they will get to empty the oil field with more wells. The gov probably wouldn’t let them drill any more wells a few months ago. Now they will have 3! Go BP!

OK, a different ROV doing the Sawing, Skandi was just in closeup on what they were doing. My mistake.

You are absolutely right about this...and hats off to those doing this work...topside as well as the operators...these people are doing a heck of a job......deserving of more than a handshake when all is said and done.....The news has done a terrible injustice in pointing fingers when the real news is the feat which is occuring now.... Absolutely amazing!
Besides we don’t work in a McDonalds instant meal mentality as so much of the public...it took a lot of time to drill the well in the first place...it’s going to take alot of time to fix it.

We need a screen grab of this to put on a T-shirt and caption it “Obama’s Legacy.”

This would be a big mistake IMHO. I think conservatives, capitalists and efficient energy advocates will be hurt by making this an ever increasing political issue. If conservatives try to make the blowout a part of Obama's legacy, the left will defend Obama by closing down the petroleum industry just as they shut down the Nuclear power industry after Three Mile Island.

Don't kid yourself, be it salt, cigarettes, fat or petroleum, the nanny state is looking to put certain industries out of business as soon as possible thru regulation or taxation. All they need is the condition precedent to make a sympathetic case. This blowout cannot and will not be pinned to Obama. What can be pinned to Obama is the filthy coastline that federal regulation prevented from being protected by the states.

"I think digging two relief wells is dumb....increases the possibility of something going wrong..."

Nope. Doubles the possibility that things will go right.

Just watching this, I wonder why they don’t seal the cap on the OD of the flanges?

Probably and obvious answer, but I’ve never seen the question asked:

“Why can’t they unbolt the flange at the bottom of the riser, and bolt a cover or new junction to it?”

I thought at first they were smoothing the shear cut, but now that they are close up on the saw it looks like they are making vertical cuts down to the weld line on the remaining riser.

My guess is they are going to cut the top away in ‘slices’ to make a smoother rounder surface for the seal down by the weld line.

As tempting as it may be to pile on, the fact that the left (Carville, Matthews, etc.) is beginning to speak out against the Obama Regime is reason enough to step back and let them.

The American people see what's going on, and they know Obama has done "ZERO" - except to point fingers, threaten lawsuits and call in lame assed "experts" like college professors and Hollyweird directors.

Give them enough rope, and then step back and enjoy!

Why can’t they unbolt the flange at the bottom of the riser, and bolt a cover or new junction to it?”

Two reasons: 1. the ROVs are not powerful enough to loosen the bolts (this could be overcome though)

2. There is no way to uniformly remove the bolts, and with the enormous pressure of the well all the bolts would have to be removed at the same time or the pressure will blow the flange off and deform it at whichever bolt is still attached.

Disclaimer: I haven't been following this story closely. I apologize if I'm covering old material.

Has anyone considered drilling another hole with good controls on it which can be used as a pressure relief to make plugging the broken one easier?

1) Drill 2nd (larger?) well, with a good, intact head and valves, etc.

2) Open valves on 2nd well, causing crude flow from it and, hopefully, decreasing the pressure/flow on the 1st well

3) Have an easier time capping the 1st well due to decreased flow/pressure.

4) Close them both.
