As of now, the oil has stopped:
Adm Allen told US media the "top kill" procedure, which began on Wednesday, has pumped enough drilling fluid to block all oil and gas escaping from the well.
"They've been able to stabilise the wellhead, they're pumping mud down it. They've stopped the hydrocarbons from coming up," Adm Allen told WWL First News radio.
It was the first positive official assessment of BP's latest attempt to plug the well, after previous efforts failed.
BP has not yet commented in detail on the situation, saying merely that the operation was continuing.
Adm Allen said there was still pressure from the well, although at very low levels.
Once engineers have reduced the pressure to zero, they will begin pumping cement into the hole to seal the well, he added.
You can watch a live feed of the top kill op here.
I don’t believe it for one second.
No frckn way ..
Here's an excellent summary (link courtesy of Ernest_at_the_Beach) of what was involved in doing this. (It was taped before the top kill operation began.):
Yawnnnn....cause they are evil, like the bad PR, plus they don't care -OR- 'cause it's a complex engineering task.
ZULU:
I guess now we know why you are not an oil producer; merely an oil consumer. Succeeding in the industry, and at the depths involved is “rocket science.” It only makes sense to run through multiple tactics from a checklist (as BP did) instead of guessing at the beginning. Yes, it is regrettable that it has been 38 days, but I assure you that BP has been working around the clock to resolve the issue. Some items on their checklist precluded what they are doing now. They did not go into this operation thinking that they would invest $100,000,000 and untold environmental costs without exposure to some risk. They accepted that risk (and I am glad they do), and they will pay for it.
What you do not see in the media is the monumental volunteer effort to clean up and avoid further damage. I just returned from Louisiana where I had given three days of my time to help. I worked alongside two BP employees from other states that took their vacation time and traveled to Loisiana to assist. They will even accept your help if you want to take action instead of just talk.

Penny wise pound foolish.
In the end, they lost the oil, AND the well, and damaged public opinion on sea floor drilling.
But less Gulf (and US) drilling could increase the price of oil - and BP then makes more money...
This well cost is chump change in the big BP picture.
I vote for number 2, myself....
It took Pemex and Red Adair nine months to stop the Ixtoc spill.
Nine months.
BP did it in, what, 40 days?
Why would the officers of the BP organization do THIS?...
Because they are no doubt "progressives" in league with other "progressives"...
BP is "people" and the federal government is also "people"..
Progessive PEOPLE... i.e. progressives.. meaning wild eyed leftists.. of several "kinds"..
Forcing oil companies to extract oil from even more difficult locations than the Gulf helps them how, exactly?
Remember "Beyond Petroleum"?
It is truly amazing how many "conservatives" seem to be as ignorant as the libs when it comes to things like this.
Making sausage is not a pretty thing to watch.

I’m tied up right now making trying to make a living and will have to make even more to pay what I’m sure will be the extra cost incurred by BP in my fuel bills for the next few years. From what I read, BP ignored signals there were potential problems when they started this project. I know it cost them a lot to drill this well. AND, if they feel they got a poor shake from the Obama Administration, maybe they shouldn’t have contributed so much to his campaign.
ALSO, why are they still shipping fuel to Iran in violation of U.S. Sanctions?
But, like I said, penny wise, pound foolish. THEY and WE will be footing this bill for some time to come.

Demand stays the same (or goes up - depends on economic recovery).
Oil harder to extract, supply goes down - oil price goes up.
Oil harder to extract, extraction costs go up - oil price goes up.
Same BP margin (mark-up), more money to BP’s profit...

No... ?
Hey, criticism is easy, and deserved, on many fronts. But I know that the indigenous human quality of attempting to do right, after a problem presents itself is what stopped the flow. There will be ample time for armchair quarterbacking. My gratitude goes to the men and women that were (and still are) in the arena. I, for one, will not dishonor the lives of the 11 that tried to ride out the explosion, staying behind in an unsuccessful effort to control the explosion. They were in the arena and did the best they could. They did not give up and worked with fastidiousness. If there are heroes in this incident, it is them. It was only yesterday that they were given a memorial. In a sense, it reminded me of the many funerals I attended for friends that died in the Murrah Building.
I wish I were perfect (without fault) in all I do; then I would surely be comfortable judging and criticizing others. It must be nice to be you. /s
The next time you fill your gas tank, think of the 11 that died doing their job so that you could live your lifestyle. Think of the thousands that are giving time to assist in the clean up. I appreciate more than you know your need to earn a living. We all do what we can in these trying times. But, some have different priorities. My foray was not compensated, and I sure had nothing given to me while there. Of course, I would not have taken it anyway.
Thank you for whatever work you do. I always respect a man that works.

Peace.
Agreed, peace it is. I have always been taught that common adversity builds teams and teamwork. I am stronger because of considering your views and passion, and have had to re-examine my core. Truly, thank you for expressing yours.
If you ever get through Oklahoma, let me know. I would be happy to host you for dinner.
Peace, my friend.
