Census workers can enter your apartment in your absence
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Barr Code ^ | May 26, 2010 | Rep. Bob Barr

Posted on 05/27/2010 12:27:53 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Thousands of census workers, including many temporary employees, are fanning out across America to gather information on the citizenry. This is a process that takes place not only every decade in order to complete the constitutionally-mandated census; but also as part of the continuing “American Community Survey” conducted by the Census Bureau on a regular basis year in and year out.

What many Americans don’t realize, is that census workers — from the head of the Bureau and the Secretary of Commerce (its parent agency) down to the lowliest and newest Census employee — are empowered under federal law to actually demand access to any apartment or any other type of home or room that is rented out, in order to count persons in the abode and for “the collection of statistics.” If the landlord of such apartment or other leased premises refuses to grant the government worker access to your living quarters, whether you are present or not, the landlord can be fined $500.00.

That’s right — not only can citizens be fined if they fail to answer the increasingly intrusive questions asked of them by the federal government under the guise of simply counting the number of people in the country; but a landlord must give them access to your apartment whether you’re there or not, in order to gather whatever “statistics” the law permits.

In fact, some census workers apparently are going even further and demanding — and receiving — private cell phone numbers from landlords in order to call tenants and obtain information from them. Isn’t it great to live in a “free” country?

A mis-read of the statute. I thought the RATs were the only ones to get hysterical like this?

Well there may appear to be noone home at your place, but that could (in the mind of the censustaker) be because they're all huddled in a back room, afraid that the knock on the door means La Migra is coming for them.

That would be ironic, because the powers that be and the Illegalistas have a common interest in getting as many of them counted as presumptive citizens as possible.

So if the censustaker could just get inside, she could assure them that she's just there to get a head count.

“This refers to entrance into a building, NOT entrance into an apartment or house.”

Obviously houses have no resemblance whatsoever to “buildings” whatever those are.

That was almost exactly (word for word) what happened last time the lady came here. THey’ve been here twice, they’ve only gotten a head count.

No harrasing calls yet but we only have cells, no landline.

Grun, History, there are two ways of looking at a thread like this.

1. It’s got misinformation. This is bad. Some freepers will buy the original post’s premise, because they read the headline and perhaps the original post uncritically. What’s more, Anti-freepers may pick up on the thread and publicize it just to make Free Republick and its adherents look bad. Therefore such a thread should be removed.

2. Follow-on posts will thrash the subject out. A consensus will sometimes (by no mean always!) evolve. A careful reading of the thread will often illuminate on the subject, even in the case where the consensus has it that the original post’s information was bogus in some way. The discussion is useful; therefore the thread should stand.

Take your pick.

I didn’t care for the way that someone that was for all intents and purposes “born yesterday” came onto a thread and order the mods around.

I have never ONCE been advised that my people or I have such access.

If my superiors ever told me such a thing, it would be at the top of Breaking News the same day.

We avoid entering the respondent's home like the plague.

The ACS is different, but they won't infiltrate apartments either.

No offense, but Mr. Barr is a longtime congressman and you’re an anonymous guy or gal here on FR. I think I’ll go with his expertise until proven otherwise.

I'm thinking Barr is "FAIL" here. I've been through three phases as a crew leader and never ONCE heard any such thing.

If I had, I'd have posted it IMMEDIATELY.

They DO have access, until you ask them to leave. Sounds like these were poorly trained people.

People who work for the “Taker’s” are dirty.

I'm a Constitutionalist, doing a job I was hired for. No need to slander us.

Lighten up, Francis. Many of the temporary Census workers are veterans who have served their country.

Veterans get preferential treatment in Census hiring. You want people giving THEM a hard time based on some BS written by Bob Barr?

Not a lawyer, but I’d guess the “access” in question is the ability to knock on the doors, not authorization to enter.

So am I. Does that give me a right to trespass on your property or even to assume to order moderaters around on a forum?

How about me, G? I'm calling bullshit on this one.

I've worked 3 phases of the 2010 decennial as a crew leader, and I tell my people not to enter a dwelling even if they're INVITED IN. This, from my much more experienced longtime Census supervisors.

Hve you been issuing orders to those who moderate this forum? If not, then I have no problem with you.

“How about me, G? I’m calling bullshit on this one.

See? You are refuting the article, not presuming to run the forum.

Three. There are three people living here. Have a nice day.
