Thousands of census workers, including many temporary employees, are fanning out across America to gather information on the citizenry. This is a process that takes place not only every decade in order to complete the constitutionally-mandated census; but also as part of the continuing American Community Survey conducted by the Census Bureau on a regular basis year in and year out.
What many Americans dont realize, is that census workers from the head of the Bureau and the Secretary of Commerce (its parent agency) down to the lowliest and newest Census employee are empowered under federal law to actually demand access to any apartment or any other type of home or room that is rented out, in order to count persons in the abode and for the collection of statistics. If the landlord of such apartment or other leased premises refuses to grant the government worker access to your living quarters, whether you are present or not, the landlord can be fined $500.00.
Thats right not only can citizens be fined if they fail to answer the increasingly intrusive questions asked of them by the federal government under the guise of simply counting the number of people in the country; but a landlord must give them access to your apartment whether youre there or not, in order to gather whatever statistics the law permits.
In fact, some census workers apparently are going even further and demanding and receiving private cell phone numbers from landlords in order to call tenants and obtain information from them. Isnt it great to live in a free country?
This is a pretty liberal reading of the code!
The relevant language is at Title 13, Chapter 7, Subchapter II, § 223 of the US Code. The section prevents the owner or manger of any hotel, apartment house, boarding or lodging house, tenement, or other building from refusing to provide a list of the buildings occupants or providing access to such premises. This means a buildings owner or manger cannot refuse to let a census worker into or out of the building and cannot refuse to provide a list of occupants for the purpose of the census count. The penalty for refusal is $500. No where in the section does it authorize entry into individual apartments, lodgings, or living quarters.
The relevant code section is found at:

From the original link. if not true, call out Barr for writing an article with factual faults.
No, I went to the Census web site and attempted to find a reference to concur with what Bob Barr stated.
He should have used a clickable reference link and/or a url footnote for all of us to view as to what he is referring to.
Since there was none, I went and looked myself.
This information seems to be incorrect. I think we have plenty to hold against Obama without making things up. Bob Barr should know better.
From the official census site:
“Note that the census taker will never ask to enter your home “
http://2010.census.gov/2010census/how/preparing.php
No offense, but Mr. Barr is a longtime congressman and you’re an anonymous guy or gal here on FR. I think I’ll go with his expertise until proven otherwise.
Only if you pay jizya .... uhhh.... your nonmudslime healthcare tax!
This refers to entrance into a building, NOT entrance into an apartment or house.
E.g. there are some security buildings where they don’t let just anyone in, you have to be buzzed in by the person you are visiting or the manager — they do have to let a census worker into the buildings so they can knock on doors.
But see my post 24, for statement on the official census website, stating that census worker will never ask to enter your home.
I worked for the Census early last year and was promoted to recruiting supervisor before the first week was out, due to my background and disabled veteran status. That was in Texas, not known as a hotbed of liberal activism, yet many of the managers and above were obvious and loud Obama supporters. If they posted the information that they could enter rental units on their website, Beck or Limbaugh would’ve already been all over it. Any organization that partners with ACORN, La Raza and worse is not one I’d trust too far.
Please see my post 24 with link.
Thank you for posting the link Smartinsight.

Preparing For the Census Taker
What to do when a census taker visits you.
“Conducting the census is an enormous task, and the Census Bureau goes to extraordinary measures to keep all the data we collect confidential.”
— Robert M. Groves, Director of the United States Census Bureau
If you don’t send back your form, you may receive a visit from a census taker. If a census taker visits you, here’s what you should do:
First ask to see their ID. All census workers carry official government badges marked with just their name; they may also have a “U.S. Census Bureau” bag
Note that the census taker will never ask to enter your home
If you’re still not certain about their identity, please call the Regional Census Centers to confirm they are employed by the Census Bureau
Answer the census form questions for your entire household (you must be at least 15 years old to answer questions) so that the census taker can record the results for submission to the Census Bureau
Census takers visit local homes several times to capture resident information for the 2010 Census. If you prefer, you can schedule a visit with your census taker. Should the census taker come when you are away from your home, they will leave a contact number. If a census taker has not visited your home or you have a question about your participation with the census, call your Census office.
Help for non-English speaking respondents
Census takers will have a flashcard containing a sentence about the 2010 Census written in approximately 50 languages. If a resident doesn’t speak English, the census taker shows the flashcard to the resident, and the resident points to the language he/she speaks. A census crew Leader will then reassign the case to a person who speaks that language.
1. The check is in the mail.
2. I’ll respect you in the morning.
3. I’m from the government, and I am here to help you.
4. Trust me, I’ll take care of everything.
5.. Drinking? Why, no, Officer.
6. I never watch television except for PBS.
7. ...but we can still be good friends.
8. Don’t worry, he’s never bitten anyone.
9. I’ve never done anything like this before
10. ...then take a left. You can’t miss it.
Time to learn how to make a “bouncing betty”.
Good list. :)
I am not faulting you for posting the article, it’s a legitimate article by Rep. Bob Barr.
But in this case Bob Barr jumped the gun, didn’t stop to think and really read the law he was presumably referring to.
Jet Jaguar posted the law, but in careful reading, and as BookmanTheJanitor and I pointed out, that refers to giving them entrance into the building, to the halls and public areas, not into private apartments or homes.
I posted the link im my post 24 to the official census site, where they state that the census workers will never ask to go inside your home.
So, it’s “much ado over nothing”.
As I also said in my post 24, there are plenty of things to hold against Obama, we don’t need to misinterpret or make things up.
Maybe someone should send the link to this thread to Bob Barr.
I’m doing census work, we aren’t even supposed to open screens. Ring the bell, or knock on the outside of the screen door is what we are told to do. I’m all for being annoyed at the process, and participating on a minimal level, but we are warned repeatedly about driving, parking, etc - Barr should be embarrassed by this.
Besides, all the dumba$$ questions on the long form, most of that info the fed, state and local goobermints already possess.
Reckon the complete ineptness of the goobermint is really beginning to show plainly and painfully.
maybe you could tell census worker that you don’t speak english.
There is a SNL skit about the census with Christopher Walken. Funny, funny, funny. Everyone should see it.
A census worker (woman with heavy Arab accent) was at my door yesterday. She showed her ID and wanted to know about my next door neighbor. After I told her he was the only one living there, she opened up his census form and thought I was going to help her fill the rest of it out. When I told her that was the only information I would give her, she got a little testy with me and wanted my name. I said goodbye to her and closed the door.
Right. He'll just wait until you leave, and then go in without asking. This type of tortured interpretation is exactly the hallmark of this Administration, and every Democrat activity since Clinton's famous, "...what the definition of 'is' is..."
Basically, think outside of the box for the most nefarious, scumbaggy, criminal application of a given phrase (or the exact opposite of what it sounds like!) and you're just about spot on what they really mean.
;-/
I’m also doing census work and we cannot open screen doors, nor enter property with a closed gate.
I leave a note with my cell phone number and if they call back we can do the interview over the phone.
People do NOT have to give all the info asked for if they don’t want to.
I only filled out the number of people residing in my home when I sent in my form earlier this year.
Of course, there is certainly a problem with the addresses. I think that the people who were doing those last August must have been paid for the number of addresses and not the accuracy of them. lol
One women on my team was given the address of a gazebo on the property and she said it wasn’t even a nice gazebo but pretty much falling down.
One of my addresses was a garage.
It’s the government. Ain’t it reassuring that soon we’ll have our medical care through them as well?
