McALLEN Heavily armed Mexican freshwater pirates have been shaking down U.S. boaters on Falcon Lake, a reservoir and bass fishing haven that straddles the Rio Grande.
At least three such incidents have been reported since April 30, the latest on Sunday, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety warning issued Tuesday that linked the muggings to northern Mexico's increasing lawlessness.
According to descriptions of the incidents, the robbers in at least one case posing as Mexican federal law enforcement officers searched fishermen's boats for guns and drugs, then demanded cash at gunpoint.
One of the incidents reportedly occurred on the U.S. side of the lake.
The robbers are believed to be members of a drug trafficking organization or members of an enforcer group linked to a drug trafficking organization who are ... using AK-47s or AR-15 rifles to threaten their victims, the DPS statement said. They appear to be using local Mexican fishermen to operate the boats to get close to American fishermen.
It was unclear why sport fishermen were targeted, but the warning comes only a few weeks before bass fishing tournaments that are among the South Texas border region's biggest tourist draws.
DPS spokesman Tom Vinger said the warning was issued in part because of the upcoming tournaments.
Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez said he would be discussing security concerns with tournament participants and has been reviewing protective measures with the DPS Border Security Operations Center and the region's Fusion Center, a federal information clearinghouse for terrorism prevention and response.
Reported victims included:
Five people in two boats who were approached by four tattooed men April 30 claiming to be federales near the church at Old Guerrero, a once-submerged town on the Mexican side of the lake. The men boarded their boats, demanded cash and asked where are the drugs? They then took $200 from the Americans and followed the boats until they re-entered U.S. waters.
Three fishermen who were approached May 6 by a boat containing two men who pointed AR-15s the civilian version of the U.S. military's M-16 assault rifle at them. One boarded the fishing boat, searched for drugs, cash and guns, chambered a round in his rifle and told the fishermen he would shoot them if they did not give him money.
Boaters on the U.S. side of the lake who were approached by a boat containing five armed men on May 16, according to second-hand reports that reached law enforcement officers. The DPS said it couldn't confirm if the boaters had been robbed.
Tuesday's notice urged fishermen to stay as far as possible from any of the Argos-type boats typically used as fishing vessels by Mexican fishermen, which DPS said had large prows, small outboard motors without cowling and no identification numbers on the hulls.
Boaters on the lake also were urged to stay within U.S. waters and file a float plan with family members.
Falcon Lake is an approximately 60-mile-long reservoir on the Rio Grande fronting Starr and Zapata counties on the Texas side and shared between the United States and Mexico. It was formed by a dam in 1953 to conserve water for agriculture and control downstream flooding.
I HAD high hopes for him...no longer. He can go to Hell.

Give ‘em hell, local Texans. Even if, or though, no one else comes to your side, you’re still Texas, and my money’s on you.
¿Como se dice AAAARRRRGGHHHHH en Español?
(”Sounds like Clint Eastwood needs to saddle up and ride on down there...;”)
The last trip I made was great. We flew into Bay 0f Los Angeles with our three little planes, fished for a few days, filled our coolers with fish, shrimp, Tequila, etc. and flew home. (after a customs stop in Mexicali)
While we were there the Federales came into town evidently escorting the Governor of the state. There were also a couple of gringos that looked like DEA or some such. They drank with the Mexicans, arm wrestled, and raced the little VW patrole cars through town until they all finally passed out. What a night!
Oh, come on..... Right before an election you think ANY politician is going to stick their head up swawkin like turkey?
Rick has said he will sign same if it get to his desk.
Maybe be best thing would be to train em and arm em then send em back to straighten out their corrupt mess down there. Biggest trouble with their revolutions is they always put into power more corruption they they kick out, maybe says a lot about that Aztec bloodline.
Ping!))
If you want on, or off this S. Texas/Mexico ping list, please FReepMail me.
Again I say, Deputize tons of Texas Rangers and order them to shoot to kill.
After there are a few hundred dead, the message will be received. The sanctity of human life should be ignored when compared to war and the preservation of the union.
Minefields are cheaper and don’t unionize or discriminate.
Carry extra anchors and chains. Just a suggestion!

Law enforcement agencies urging caution on Falcon Lake
Citing several armed robberies and attempted armed robberies on Falcon Lake in Zapata County, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and the Zapata County Sheriffs Office are strongly urging boaters on Falcon Lake to stay on the United States side of the lake and not venture into Mexican waters.
Three reported incidents since April 30 have raised concern among law enforcement officers in the Lake Falcon area. Two of the three incidents involved United States citizens who had gone into the Mexican side of the lake, passing the International Waters markers. Most of the incidents occurred in the Old Guerrero area, but its possible that other areas are a concern as well.
Fishermen are advised to stay as far away as possible from any of the Argos-type fishing boats typically used as fishing vessels by Mexican fishermen.
These boats have a large prow, a small outboard motor without a cowling and no identification numbers on the hull.
Several bass fishing tournaments are scheduled for Falcon Lake during the next few weeks, and officials are concerned that they could be in danger if they cross into Mexican waters while they fish. One of the incidents occurred in U.S. waters.
This weekend, Zapata County Sheriff Sigi Gonzalez, will discuss these concerns with bass tournament participants. He has been working with Texas Parks and Wildlife regarding security matters on Falcon Lake. The DPS Border Security Operations Center and the Fusion Center are working with Zapata County and Parks and Wildlife to review protective measures in the area.
The robbers are believed to be members of a drug trafficking organization or members of an enforcer group linked to a drug trafficking organization who are heavily armed and using AK-47s or AR-15 rifles to threaten their victims. They appear to be using local Mexican fishermen to operate the boats to get close to American fishermen.
On April 30, five people in two different boats were fishing on Falcon Lake and went to the Old Guerrero area, where they were taking photos of the old church. While they were there, a boat with four heavily tattooed men approached the two boats quickly. The men identified themselves as Federales, but they were not wearing uniforms. The men boarded the boats,
demanded cash and asked where are the drugs? The fishermen told the
men that they had no drugs and were just fishing and taking photos. They ended up giving the men $200 cash
