BANNED: The American Flag on Cinco de Mayo
Townhall.com ^ | 05.09.10 | Kevin McCullough

Posted on 05/08/2010 10:05:53 PM PDT by jodiluvshoes

When 200 hispanic students skipped school last week and marched through downtown Morgan Hill, California chanting "Si se puede" intermixed with "We want respect," none were banned from school attendance on their return.

When five students, one of them an American from latino roots, wore American flags to school as a sign of patriotic speech, they were labeled incendiary. They were instructed to turn their shirts inside-out so as to cover up the American flag. And when they refused to surrender their first amendment right to expression, they were given unexcused absences.

I think we might be taking the wrong track with this.

Here’s what I mean: Cinco de Mayo is NOT a major Mexican holiday. Look it up if you don’t believe me. It was basically invented by beer companies to sell more Coronas on a date when the weather is usually nice (starts feeling like summer in May, people go out to bars more), so they chose the date of an obscure battle and somehow managed to turn it into a de facto holiday. It’s much, much more popular in the United States than it is in Mexico.

If students want to celebrate American capitalism...great!

(I have a feeling if we start saying things like this to the students who apparently don’t even know their own history and were protesting...the reactions would be pretty hilarious)

C de M celebrates a relatively minor event...a Mexican victory over the French, of all things.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
You can’t be considered a legitimate country without a victory over the French.

“Let's sing some songs about Mexico.

“From the halls of Montezuma ....”
Is it true that the mexican national anthem is...”Shall we gather at the river”?

On the other hand, the school may have saved those students lives.

Any word on how outnumbered the students would have been if it had come to violence?

200 on 5?

Brushed up on Wikipedia.

This minor victory was promptly followed up by a huge defeat for the Mexicans at the hands of the French.

They followed up the initial invasion of 6,500 troops with 30,000 troops.

The French took over Mexico and ran it for three years.

All of those troops against lazy tequila soaked Mexicans............still can’t see a French victory.

As if Hispanic students are so stupid they can’t tell Cinco de Mayo from the Battle of the Alamo! The USA had no dog in Cinco de Mayo.

"From the halls of Montezuma ...."

******

I live a long way from California. We have a relatively small Mexican population.

Does the school fly the American flag every school day?

If it doesn't, it should. Every public school that receives federal funds should be required to fly the American flag every day.

Myself, I think it is sad when Americans of Mexican background find it insulting when the American flag is displayed.

Do these same Mexican-Americans find it insulting when the American flag is displayed on St. Patrick's and Columbus Days?

If they are American citizens, they should be proud when other Americans proudly display American flags no matter what ethnic holiday it happens to be. Sad. So sad.

This is what happens when you cater to non-American groups. If they don’t see the American flag as first then they are in the wrong country. The whole idea of allowing the Mexican flag anytime over the American flag is disgraceful and wrong. As the demonstrations show, it is more about Mexican gangs, overthrow of the US, or just plain ignorance.

School officials ought to know better, but PC reigns!

Like I illuded to before...

How do you earn respect by walkling out of school???

The kids, legal or not, their job is school, plain and simple...

If I were a tax payer in that school district, I would seriousl condsider shorting my taxes to that district this next year by an appropriate amount for the district failing to maintain discipline and keep ing thekids in school...

If they want to protest, do it on your own damn time!!!

Second, those people need to be taught tha the American flag (by law) is never to be flown secondary, or below any other nations flag, or in a manner to disrespect the flag...

Flying it upside down is a lose interpretation, that most of us understand that particular meaning, which I believe is widely misused, but I do respect the individuals intent when I do see that...

Just my opinion...

Sad day when we give in to a phoney holiday to pacify a bunch of malcontents who support ILLEGAL immigrants.

I really don’t think that was on the minds of the men who made their stand at the Alamo! Ya think?

These kids were accused of adding fuel to the fire.

So. The school admits there was a “fire.” So why not deal with those who started the fire, first?

Is the Pledge of Allegiance still around?

The American flag irritates socialist revolutionaries.

It’s like showing a crucifix to a vampire or thrusting a string of garlic in his face.

IMHO

The basic problem is the culture that emboldens this assistant principal. In a sane culture, this wouldn’t have been attempted. Our culture is significantly characterized by a weird sort of self hatred, and our opponents know this and take advantage of it. It’s part and parcel of our being disallowed from appreciating our culture publicly.
What happened at this school is just the symptom of this disease.

We need to take charge of our national sovereignty. The border needs to be sealed at whatever the cost. Single fences in sparse areas and triple fences where the border runs thru populated areas. Go to Google Earth and look at the border from Tijuana east. There are many, many roads and tracks that facilitate movement. FENCE IT NOW!

Second, since we don't seem to be able to stop illegals from being hired then target a more vulnerable area. Billions of dollars are transferred to Latin America each year. These transactions need to be stopped. Too hard? How about this... Require all transactions wiring dollars to Latin America require identification of the sender as a U.S. CITIZEN. Require transactions to be reported electronically with SSN of the sender to a data base to quickly ID and stop those who game the system. Then... tax the transactions at the same rate equal to FICA, SS, and medicare. Let them apply to get a refund if their tax returns balance with what they are sending out.

Just an idea but more than we see coming out of our representatives.
