Calif. governor ends support for offshore drilling

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday withdrew his support of a plan to expand oil drilling off the California coast, citing the massive oil spill that resulted from a drilling rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico.

The announcement assures that no new drilling will take place off the state's coastline in the foreseeable future because Schwarzenegger would have to include the drilling proposal in his May revision of the state budget.

The BP spill is an example of why the companies should be held to safety standards. Having worked on unsafe rigs and been hurt on them, I can safely say it's not necessary, and BP sure as hell has the money to do it right.

That said, some risk has to come with the work of drilling. And California has no right to consume as much oil as it does and then say, "but we don't want to actually drill for it here, that's for others to endure"

This is meaningless. Awnowd has always opposed lifting the federal moratorium on Left Coast. But he had advocated allowing some drilling in the state's own three mile coastal zone as a gimmick to raise some state revenue.

My husband has worked with the oil companies on and offshore for years and is currently inspecting projects onshore. The safety regs are extensive and never-ending, it seems, and his daily reports are filled with endless safety meetings held with the crew and ongoing analysis of each step of the work through the lens of worker and environmental safety. CAL OSHA will be paying a visit to a job where the contractor isn’t working safely around here, the word gets out fast.

Of course there are jobs that are less safely run than others, but at this stage, I’m not sure BP’s rig fits that category without more information.

And the Exxon/Mobils of the world will be in the cross-hairs for making their hard earned and deserved 7-8% profit margin while the Feds/States will be taxing the per gallons all the way to the treasury.

I'll give BP the benefit of the doubt right now, but as I said, I've worked on rigs in the past that we can say were, um, "less than stellar" in their safety compliance.

Guess it depends on the inspectors, the frequency of inspection, state regulation vs. federal, etc.
