U.S. law enforcement officials say there is growing evidence the Times Square bomber had ties to radical elements overseas and did not act alone.
One senior official said the individuals involved "are living here and did not come from overseas to carry out the bombing."
Attorney General Eric Holder said today the investigators had made "substantial progress" in tracking the man who drove a Nissan Pathfinder into New York's Times Square with a crude bomb that failed to detonate.
Officials declined to provide the specifics that led them to believe there were overseas links to a larger plot.
...
"This is moving very fast because they left behind a treasure trove of evidence in the unexploded car," one US official told ABC News.
Officials told ABC News Senior Justice correspondent Pierre Thomas that the Connecticut owner of the vehicle told them he had sold the Nissan SUV last month in an unrecorded sale to an "Arabic or Latino looking man" in his 20's or 30's, for a few hundred dollars in cash.
The license plate on the car was apparently stolen from an auto repair shop outside Bridgeport, Connecticut, according to law enforcement officials.
The authorities told ABC News that the previous owner provided a description of the man who bought the car, and told investigators the vehicle was sold for several hundred dollars in cash, with no written records identifying the purchaser.

Sounds like we need to close the "vehicle show loophole" for non-dealers to just sell a vehicle for cash with no written records identifying the purchaser and no background check. (I don't really need a sarcasm tag, do I?)
That’s the danger of selling to an individual. He may register it and he may not.
I’ve always wondered what if I sell to some guy and he doesn’t re-register in his name then he wrecks and kills someone. Can I be sued?
Yet again, Obama fails America.
I sure hope nobody is so stupid as to think this event was the end.
Blood will flow on our streets.
It took Obama a very short time to erase the relative safety we enjoyed for over 7 years. Thank you President Bush.
Who will die? Who will you bury? Who will you blame? What will you do? WHAT WILL WE AS A COUNTRY DO?
This ABC News article has been updated and now says, “One senior official said there are several individuals believed to be connected with the bombing and that at least one of them is a Pakistani-American.”
In answer to your question it could have been in a flood or “totaled” out then repaired. Happens a lot.
The way Obamunism is going, you’ll soon be required to “crunch” your old cars (especially SUVs) and “upgrade” to “green” car by Government Motors or one of the competitors that hasn’t been harassed (like we saw with Toyota’s floormat issue).
Same in Michigan, where I just did it.
Nationality isn't as important an identifying characteristic when he serves a violent theological movement that has murdered many thousands in the past decade.
Neil Cavuto just said $1,200 or $1,300 for the '93 Pathfinder on his afternoon show. Still seems low.
...or the militant wing of the Old Order Amish.
Sounds like quite a few bombs may be planted all over the U.S.
What’s interesting though is that the leader of Pakistan’s Taliban had earlier taken credit for this bombing attempt.
Maybe it was a Black Russian.
No red flag here, IMO. I sold an old car for cash exactly this way about 6 years ago. I had the title, so I signed it and gave to the buyer. It's not only legal, the text on the back of the title specifically explains how to do it.
Of course the other way would be to sell through a dealer. In my case the dealer offered less than the private buyer.
According to Bluebook, a 1993 Nissan Pathfinder, 100k miles, standard package, FAIR condition has a trade in value of $800.
A private party sale should be more.
I really don’t know what to think.
This “bomb” looks like it was put together by a person not very versed in how to build them. Anyone reading this could have done a better job.
The wrong fertilizer...Jerrycans of gas...Fireworks? It makes no sense.
Jihadis are classed in how to make explosives from commonly available items. Even a little research online would produce recipes that would do a better job that what we are hearing was used.
It almost seems like a joke. Either we do not have a clear picture of what is actually there, or this person clearly did not intend for there to be an explosion.
I am really confused.
