I thought the mysterious black things in that photo had long since been determined to be rock slides on the sides of the steep slopes.
They look a little like glacial crevices covered by wind swept sand material or maybe canyon sides collapsing into an unseen valley or cavern below.
Yes, that picture and its caption are totally unrelated to the article. Someone at the paper just stuck it in there because it looked cool.
