I'm planning to travel to Mexico. Do I need a passport?

As of March 1, 2010, all U.S. citizens – including children -- must present a valid passport, book or card, for travel beyond the border zone into the interior of Mexico. Entry by any means, for example by plane or car, is included in this requirement. U.S. citizens traveling as tourists beyond the border zone or entering Mexico by air must pay a fee to obtain a tourist card, also known as an FM-T, available from Mexican border crossing points, Mexican tourism offices, airports within the border zone and most airlines serving Mexico. Upon arrival in Mexico, business travelers must complete and submit a form (Form FM-N 30 days) authorizing the conduct of business, but not employment, for a 30-day period. Travelers entering Mexico for purposes other than tourism or business or for stays of longer than 180 days require a visa and must carry a valid U.S. passport. U.S. citizens planning to work or live in Mexico should apply for the appropriate Mexican visa.

"Isn't it odd Mexico doesn't think we have the same rights for travelers to America?????
Uh, and no, I am NOT ever visiting Mexico."

Too bad some people didn't bother to read what you wrote before they took off on you. They missed your point.

yet they think we should look the other way at the 10 million without any documentation...

I think you've under-counted at least by a factor of two.

If you go to Mexico or Canadia you need a passport.
I have been to Mexico so many times I can’t count, but given the situation in their country now, I will not go again until they get the drug gangs under control. They own all the border towns and if you get outside of the tourist areas of Cancun or Puerta Vallarta, buddy you are in serious indian country. I am bilingual, but look like a balding Howdy Doody so I stick out like a sore thumb. Last time I went to PV we went with another couple. The wife of my buddy had a copy of her birth certificate and we were held up at the airport. A couple of 20’s got her in. We later laughed about having to bribe the Mexican official to get a gringo into the country. Seriously, Mexico has been a marxist country for 70 years and have no problem doing a smackdown on anyone including Americans. Reason is that the press never reports on it. Mexican or American.

Wait, I think HD1200 is just saying that the Mexicans have tons of restrictions against Americans visiting in their country, yet are complaining that they have restrictions when they come to the US. Not sure if that is a good reason for everyone to be jumping on him/her. Or am I the one reading incorrectly?

I’ve been to Mexico City three times, but I had a Mexican bodyguard. No way would I go without one and now I wouldn’t go at all. I speak Spanish, too, and I love the people, the music, food, traditional dance, archaeology, architecture, and on and on. But that love grew before they forced themselves on us. I don’t feel the same way anymore.

You couldn’t pay me enough to go to Mexico.

Years ago I remember my father-in-law talking about how wonderful the beaches were. He said that the folks treated you like royalty and that EVERYTHING was pennies on the dollar.

I used to think I would someday go down there for the experience... NOT anymore.

Yes. Yes, a passport. A passport... and a machete. And 6 kilos of heroin. And a dufflebag (to hold decapitated heads). And a case of Pepto-Bismol.

But for most part, Mexico is completely safe.

LOL. How can I get on the Mexican Department of Tourism payroll?

Mexico has long had one of the highest murder rates in the world even completely disregarding the border/cartel problems.

Cancun’s not bad. It’s not like Hermosillo.

I don't know about Cancun; but, last week there was a story about Acapulco where there was a shootout on a very busy street in daylight. Innocent people were shot. Acapulco, a tourist destination spot; or, at least it used to be. Now, same drug cartel problems as anywhere else in Mexico.

Only the Border States and Mexico City are bad.

Most of the central states like Guanajuato are very safe.

Mexico is, however, Mexico.

Some years back we took a villa in Cancun with several other couples, all old friends. One of our friends was late leaving for the airport, and when he reached into the drawer to grab his passport, he picked up an old, expired passport he had unwisely stored in the same drawer. Nobody noticed it on the departure side, but the immigration officer in Cancun spotted it immediately. There was some negotiation, and a few pictures of Andy Jackson were agreed to be an adequate substitute for a current passport.

Like my friend who moved to Mexico a few years ago said while begging me to come and visit her. “It is really really safe, there are guards everywhere!” No thanks I am not coming. I am glad that I have seen most of Mexico because I am not coming back.

why would anyone need a passport/visa to visit a zone...again I say mexico is not a country!
The zone is comprised of the most backward orgs(except the criminal class)life in all of the Spanish speaking countries. Mexico is laughed at and joked about constantly in most of SA.

The inhabitants speak a wide vatiety of languages and the cultures vary greatly.

The ruling class...mostly Americans by birthright, contol the societies effectively and solve most of the finacial problems by exporting them to the USA.

the mexican lobby is very affective in buying Republicans and Democrats...have been for years. They also are very effective in pushing the “Latino” or “Hispanic” BS when it suits their needs. They control a large amount of the Spanish TV...thru gifts and bribes to “journalist”.

The zone needs to be destroyed and a goverment installed.

You can buy anything in Mexico. My husbands uncle died in Mexico of natural causes and the family had to buy his body to get him home for burial.

Just an fyi, many states are issuing secured drivers licenses which have an rfid chip. These are acceptable travel documents for Mexico, Canada and much of the Caribbean

Only for land border crossings. You are still going to need a passport if you fly.

But if you forget the passport, here's the phrase
you'll need:

"Donde esta el coyote?"
