ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- An armed man spotted at a North Carolina airport parking lot just after Air Force One departed Sunday told an officer he wanted to see the president and had a car equipped with police gear, including a siren and flashing lights, authorities said.
Joseph Sean McVey, 23, of Coshocton, Ohio, is charged with going armed in terror of the public, a misdemeanor, said Asheville Regional Airport Police Capt. Kevan Smith.

I think you are correct. The article I linked above (from the Asheville paper) indicates possible tendency in that direction

So they charged him with “going armed in terror of the public”? Is that a real statute? It sounds like a way to arrest anyone carrying.

“McVey”? If they’re going to just make up a name, might as well go all the way and name the stooge “Mitch Egan McLisha”.

What I am reading is that this was handled by local
Asheville is so liberal a community, it might not make much of a difference.

Another freakin’ Buckeye... I live in OH, and I’m beginning to think we ought to close our borders to keep these nutballs at home.
There’s just some folks that shouldn’t be out in public without a professionally trained handler.

Is it illegal to have police lights and a siren in your car? In Michigan it is illegal unless your vehicle is a registered emergency vehicle. Only Police agencies may use Blue lights. That varies from state to state. A OP told to remove my red lights in IL once, because there red was reserved for Police, Blue would have been okay.

He looks to me like what cops refer to as a buff, that is, somebody whos a wanna-be cop. I bet well find that he has tried and failed to join a police force somewhere in his area (probably failed the psychological part)..
He may be a volunteer fireman. Here in Ohio they use the emergency lights to get to the firestation quickly.

After reading the story, I doubt the kid even knew the messiah was in Asheville, but I bet he now has a pocket full of lawyers’ business cards.

To: don-o
Is it illegal to carry in the airport parking lot?

The investigation into what McVey was doing with formulas for rifle scopes He had Math?.... Figures... Couldn't have been a serious threat or he'd have had the ballistics for his round and rifle memorized.

6. Going Armed To The Terror Of The People By common law in North Carolina, it is unlawful for a person to arm himself/herself with any unusual and dangerous weapon, for the purpose of terrifying others, and go about on public highways in a manner to cause terror to others.
The N.C. Supreme Court states that any gun is an unusual and dangerous weapon for purposes of this offense. Therefore, persons are cautioned as to the areas they frequent with firearms.
