Jobsian drones shackle gamer with 'lifetime' iPad ban (Apple stores)

A US gamer has been banned from ever buying another iPad. Why? He reached his "lifetime limit." Who knew that such a limit existed? ...

After two Apple Employees - identified in the tale as Guy #1 and Guy #2 - check his identity via credit card, Guy #2 informs him: "There is a limit to the number of iPads that customers can buy." Our protagonist ask what that limit might be, and Guy #2 answers: "Only 2 per customer."

At that point, Guy #1 returns, and the conversation takes on a Kafkaesque quality:

* Guy #1: I'm sorry sir, but you have reached your lifetime limit of iPad purchases and will not be allowed to buy any more.
* Me: Is the iPad limit per person? Per credit card? Per household?
* Guy #1: All I can say is that you have reached your lifetime limit.
* Me: What does that mean? Can I use a different credit card to buy it? I'm buying this for a friend.
* Guy #1: You are not allowed to buy this iPad.
* Me: Wait, what? Lifetime? What does that mean?
* Guy #1: All I can say is that you have reached your lifetime limit of iPads and will not be allowed to buy any more.
...

An Apple Store employee, noted: "The employee got it wrong. The *daily* limit is two iPads per day. The 'lifetime limit' is ten."

It appears that the reason for the limits (2 per day, 10 total) is to clamp down on the substantial gray market for iPads.

Nevertheless, this is pretty weird.

Why is there a limit?

Does Apple plan to ration them?

Gray market. They're going for very high prices where they are unavailable.

Leo Laporte said on his show today that he has already purchased 8. Wonder if he knows about the limit.

Indeed. I don't presently have the scratch for ONE, so I'm not in any danger either.

Apple went through the same thing with iPhone until supplies caught up to the demand and until all the various countries got their iPhones....

It's a temporary sort of thing to prevent these things from getting 5 times the price (as it normally sells for) over in Bahrain or Timbuktu ... LOL ..

If he bought them over the period of (say) a week, he's okay on the 2/day limit, but about to run into trouble -- IF he's buying them all in his own name.

OTOH, if he's buying them via proxy, no problem.

I think the “limit 2” really only means two at a time, there’s no way for them to track total purchases.

You were saying ...

Does Apple plan to ration them?

It's the same thing that they did with iPhones. It's to prevent them from going in mass quantities to other countries where they go for five times the cost of what they are here...

When Apple's supplies catch up with the demand, and when they get them selling in the various countries, there won't be any permanent limits any more.

You can go on the Apple web site (it says ships in 5-7 days) or you can buy one at the apple store in the mall. So why do I see the $499 version of the Ipad selling for over $700 on Ebay?

According to a Flash developer, Flash will never work right on Touch devices... so don't plan on that one working out all right ... LOL ...

What? They don't accept cash? I thought that was a violation of federal law, "legal tender for all debts public and private". What if you don't have a credit card or refuse to provide your personal information?

If it's any consolation, he can have my 10 "allowed" Ipads as I will never purchase one, just like I will never purchase an Iphone or an Ipod. Nothing against Apple, I just really could care less about their tech of the month.

I wonder what the difference could be. Can’t imagine how the input device (touch) could make a difference.

That's because weird people buy things "at auction" ... LOL ...

Have you ever noticed that things sell for more than their value at auctions? Auctions and/or auction sites are the last place in the world to ever get your products from ... :-)
