Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon says seniors, kids and out-of-staters should be wary of the Arizona immigration bill signed into law this past week -- warning that it puts them at risk of being arrested.
The law makes illegal immigration a state crime. It gives police the authority to question people about their immigration status and arrest those who cannot show documentation to establish their legal residency.

The fact that you people tolerate that sort of intrusion debases your argument tremendously.
If it was good enough for me (to get into the places I worked), it's certainly good enough for anybody else.
A tourist will have a valid visa and a passport. And hence be here legally.
“Theyre going to be 100% by the book on this.”
Well I believe they will mean to do it 100% by the book. Unfortunately it’s going to come down to how it’s enforced on the ground by the police, and that’s going to add a whole new possibility for human misjudgement and error.
Like any law that appears “race based” I’ll be surpised if this isn’t overruled.
A couple of years back some guys got into trouble in the Berring and landed in Russia ~ it was MILES to any sort of authority. They went there immediately. Other than making the news it wasn’t any big thing, but they apparently didn’t intend to be illegal entrants. Otherwise, the Russians would probably have beaten them, robbed them of their cameras and boats, and just left them to rot.
Getting behind the counter of a post office customarily requires more proof than standing on the sidewalk outside the post office. So? Big hairy deal.
So if Russia didn’t want to make a stink so what. I was talking about Canada.
Frankly this could all be straightened out by importing great numbers of Africans and Eastern Europeans to Mexico ~ I was thinking maybe 40 to 50 million or so, maybe a 100 mil Chinese.
Then your typical Mexican would not look like your typical Mexican anymore.

It’s no different than any country in the world.
That’s why every nation issues passports. To identify their own citizens. That’s why every nation issues visas. To identify who is there legally.
Every place I’ve ever been, requires you keep your passport / visa available just in case. Mostly I’ve relied upon photocopies due to the hassle of potentially losing your actual passport.
Visit Mexico more than 30 miles inside the border, or for more than a few days - and you’ll be expected to have documentation.
Same for any nation on Earth.
It’s mind-boggling America is unable to even agree on such a common sense thing as our national borders.
They would have a passport stamped as a legal tourist.
When I was in Europe, I was there legal as my passport was stamped including when I was in East Germany in the early 1980s
Now you say that something similar that involves postal facilities is OK?
Eventually you'll learn to be consistent.
So all anyone would need is a passport?
Mexico isn’t too persnickety about Mexicans having to carry passports. It’s visitors who need to worry.
Liberals believe themselves to be Post American, under one world order. Post Americans are quite happy to destroy any notion of American exceptionalism. When you have a world view that proclaims America is the Problem then the only solution is to bring America in line with the rest of the world. That is exactly what Obama is doing that was the CHANGE. Very dangerous indeed because there are many out there that are fully intent on our destruction. Liberals refuse to learn the lessons of history and they are all dishonest because they will never admit to what they are intentionally doing its Cloward-Piven.
Learn to get your attributions right. I am not Conservativism.
“It’s not the law that’s race-based ~ it’s the population involved.”
Right, except it still appears to be race based whether it’s meant to be or not.
The law has a codecil that allows the citizenry to sue an AZ LEA/county/city/town that refuses to enforce this. It is meant to be enforced. And enforced aggressively.
We obviously are not going to agree on this. Enjoy your vision of America where police can force a man to prove to them—based on ethnicity and one or two other atmospheric considerations—that he belongs.
Something needs to be done about illegal immigration. Very much so. But IMO this is a scary law. This legislation does too much violence to the individual freedoms we should value as Americans.
Well to be fair, last time I was there Mexico isn’t too persnickety about Americans having to prove much either, as the entire border crossing procedure was a guy sitting off to one side on a desk watching people stream through the rotating one-way gate.
Which was a rather striking contrast to the US entry procedures.
But still. Technically it’s required. :)
He’s an a$$. I’m a senior and have not one iota of trepidation about going to AZ. Not sure I’d consider Phoenix, however. Somehow, I think I’d make it to the Grand Canyon and back just fine with my VA license.
