Ever clean out cinders in a wood stove or coal stove? Think of that ash, then divide the particle size by 10 or more to get an idea of the fineness of volcanic ash. While it is technically possible to make filters fine enough to trap such ash, they would clog to the point of not allowing any airtake.

I would imagine that you would save at least three days given the shorter distances across the Atlantic and faster speed of passenger liners. Do you remember how long the voyages took or were you too young to care?
