Volcano Spews More Ash, Spawns Wider Flight Chaos
Associated Press Writer Paisley Dodds

LONDON A lingering volcanic ash plume forced extended no-fly restrictions over much of Europe on Saturday, as Icelandic scientists warned that volcanic activity had increased and showed no sign of abating a portent of more travel chaos to come.
Scientists say that because the volcano is situated below a glacial ice cap, the magma is being cooled quickly, causing explosions and plumes of grit that can be catastrophic to plane engines if prevailing winds are right.
"The activity has been quite vigorous overnight, causing the eruption column to grow," Icelandic geologist Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson told The Associated Press on Saturday. "It's the magma mixing with the water that creates the explosivity. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an end in sight."
An expansive cloud of grit hovered over parts of western Europe on Saturday, triggering extended flight bans that stranded people around the globe. Continued volcanic activity could produce more plumes if the weather patterns stay the same.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office said the amount of ash in the plume grew Saturday and that the vast ash cloud is continuing to travel south and southeast. Scientists had planned to fly over the volcano to see how much ice has melted to determine how much longer the eruption could spew ash, but the Icelandic Coast Guard said Saturday's flight had been postponed.

That’s the common take. However, with more cosmic rays reaching the lower atmosphere due to a magnetically quiet sun, this might actually effect the climate significantly through more (and possibly toxic) cloud formation.
They are suppose to fly into Germany. First gig is in Austria. Most of travel will be by auto once there.

You know since they had started up that supper high-speed accelerator in Europe a few month ago, we have had many numerous earthquakes and now this volcano. I wonder if this could all be related? Many people were warning about stuff like this happening! Gotta go find my tin-foil hat in my closet! Where is that thingy? /s
I’ve read that UK only flies in about 5% of its food- but depends on air freight for up to 40% of the value of all its exports and imports (electronics and the like)
Give how 9-11 grounded airlines for 3 days and the economic damage it caused, imagine what this is doing to the economies of Europe
OH DEAR ME!
You mean we are both together in a category!
Shocking.
Can you bear it?
I feel honored.
I really do appreciate all your work on such scores.
THANKS BIG.
Yup...I think I read that the last three times this one erupted, Katla followed.
If Katla blows, well.....
God’s just making a joke out of Gore and Company. That’s what happens when folks try to make themselves out as knowing more than Him. :~)
Toronto is nice this time of year.
Believers can’t help but wonder what’s next.
There's two aspects to this problem: 1) People, and 2) Trade.
Except for time-sensitive/high-value items, most trade moves by ship, rail, highway, etc., so airborne pumice shouldn't be that big a factor. Turbine engines are the most at-risk from airborne abrasives. However...
Most passenger travel is by air. IF we assume this situation is long-term and have to shift travelers to alternate means, then we'll be in a competitive situation where both pax and cargo compete for limited surface transportation.
Long-term, assuming this situation continues, western Europe will take an economic hit. On the other hand, since most of our major trading partners are on the Pacific Rim, the U.S. should do okay. We can continue air transport links with eastern Europe and the Middle East by routing flights over the pole or across Africa.
Bolides and earthquakes and volcanoes, oh my. It's been a strange year so far...
airports in Southern German were still open yesterday but that is the direction the ash cloud is flowing.
Maybe he can get into Italy or Turkey and take the train from there
Stop with the good news already!
I was just thinking how quickly God can make all of man's work look impotent.
Thought it was nasa but Iceland Coast guard.

This incredible picture was taken with special cameras on board the Coast Guard machine TF-SIF yesterday. Myndin sýnir þrjú megin gosop eldgossins á Eyjafjallajökli. The figure shows the three main gosop eruption on Eyjafjallajökull. Gosopin eru 200 til 500 metrar í þvermál. Gosopin are 200 meters to 500 in diameter.
Myndin minnir óneitanlega á andlit einhverskonar forynju sem hefur brotið sér leið úr iðrum jarðar og er nú að spúa eldi og brennisteini út í andrúmslofið. The film reminds undeniably face some monsters that have broken their way of repentance and the ground is now spúa fire and brimstone into the moment praise. Afleiðingarnar eru mestu samgönguraskanir í Evrópu á friðartímum. Consequences are most transit disorders in Europe in peacetime.
I’m definitely pulling for the other (Iceland) volcano to spew! Can you bet on this anywhere? Ladbroke’s?
But lettuce? Is there a worse weight/value product?
Well, yes, now that I think of it. Peas. A conex full of peas is worth about $70.
A volcano eruption completely disrupts the airlines of the world. Just goes to show that no matter how smart we think we are, God is smarter.
This continuing ash cloud could circle the earth and start affecting crops, food supply ... shutting down air traffic world wide ...
Um, if Yellowstone wakes up, the entire world is screwed. We in the US just get to die a bit sooner (and probably cleaner).
