Volcano Spews More Ash, Spawns Wider Flight Chaos

Associated Press Writer Paisley Dodds
4-17-2010

LONDON – A lingering volcanic ash plume forced extended no-fly restrictions over much of Europe on Saturday, as Icelandic scientists warned that volcanic activity had increased and showed no sign of abating — a portent of more travel chaos to come.

Scientists say that because the volcano is situated below a glacial ice cap, the magma is being cooled quickly, causing explosions and plumes of grit that can be catastrophic to plane engines if prevailing winds are right.

"The activity has been quite vigorous overnight, causing the eruption column to grow," Icelandic geologist Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson told The Associated Press on Saturday. "It's the magma mixing with the water that creates the explosivity. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an end in sight."

An expansive cloud of grit hovered over parts of western Europe on Saturday, triggering extended flight bans that stranded people around the globe. Continued volcanic activity could produce more plumes if the weather patterns stay the same.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office said the amount of ash in the plume grew Saturday and that the vast ash cloud is continuing to travel south and southeast. Scientists had planned to fly over the volcano to see how much ice has melted to determine how much longer the eruption could spew ash, but the Icelandic Coast Guard said Saturday's flight had been postponed.

I’ll add, the Indonesian tsunami should have been all that the godless libtards — whose religion is communism, the environment or abortion — should have needed to understand the supreme weakness of man relative to earth’s magnitude of power.

The deception comes from an earth that works so slowly relative to our lifespans. But it is there for anyone to see, who knows their history. Libtards, commies and abortion lovers are not typically the type who know their history beyond American Idol, Survivor and “Bush’s Fault”.

Very well said my friend, especially your last paragraph!

People who believe in and worship God appreciate this. Know this. The atheists and godless libtards whose religion is abortion or the environment or communism, are incapable of understanding this except through a very strong 1st hand lesson. They will get one if this volcano goes on for long.

Humans are incredibly adaptable. When our backs are to a wall, we can adapt with amazing quickness.

The problem today is that we are highly specialized with extremely few of us being able to be self sufficient with our own crops and livestocks. Most of us are entirely dependent on trade to survive.

If we had a massive shift in long term environmental conditions, we would adapt to it somehow, even as we suffered heavily during the transition, even as rates of death and disease would soar during the transition.

Unlike lower animals, we are so extremely adaptable, I have no doubt we would come through it, if with a far more basic lifestyle.

What terrifies me is some cataclysm that causes us to lose our modern technology, so we fall back into a hunter/gatherer basic agrarian lifestyle with no chance to leap out of it because all of the technology necessary is lost and has to be re-discovered from scratch.

That terrifies me.

Wifey and I just sprung for the three month supply...enough to hold us for six weeks ‘tween the two of us. With a shelf life longer than our life expectancy, we can will the stuff to the kids if we never use it.

Terrifies? I don’t have a sense of anything terrifying me...
It’s only death, what could go wrong?

Piston engines also breathe air. They would be scoured by the dust.

"Getting serious for a moment, how long does this volcano have to spew ash for us to go into a year or two of massive global cooling? When Tambora blew, if was followed by a “year without a summer”. So how long does Eyjafjallajokull have to go to cause that kind of cooling effect?"

I can't answer that question. It's the one (Katla) that usually follows this one that causes problems of serious cooling and reduced/lost crops.

I have a wealthy friend who is doing the same for himself, his wife and their two sons and grandkids. (I think his goal is a one year supply for all)
He let me try a dehydrated ice cream sandwich...it was excellent.

Katla worries me, but my big concern is the whole Laki fissures, which may have caused the Mississippi to freeze at New Orleans.

Pinatubo was bad, but that was nothing. I don't want to see Tambora or Laki II.

Laki is also very poisinous—sulfurous and hydroflourous acids. Kills everything, animals, plants, and people.

God gave us the animals an the plants of the earth to exploit and so we have some power over them.

God gave us stewardship over His Creation. To reduce that to mere exploitation is a mistake. We're not to deny the ox some grain to eat as he treads it out. The righteous man regardeth the life of his beast.

We have dominion, but are to be merciful. Not a sparrow falls to the ground, that He is unaware. He loves them all, but us most of all. The lesser Creatures were subject to vanity through our actions, as descendants of Adam, and look forward to the liberty of the Sons of God as they are capable in measure. All the Earth groans in anticipation of that day.

It's all right there in the Bible, but people are so surprised when it's laid out in this way.

I believe there are a number of authentic Holy Spirit used Roman Catholic et al prophetic sources.

If you have a link, that would be great. Thanks.

“I have to admit I’m sort of loving this story.”

It’s pitiful.

There are people without enough medication...also, not enough food at airports to feed people, children, and babies, etc. People are running out of money for hotels, food, etc. Besides, hotels are filled to capacity, and some had to leave for lack of funds.

I’m a retired flight attendant for United, and I know how much chaos is caused with just a day of flight delays/cancellations....for both employees and customers.

Yesterday they interviewed a couple stranded in Europe. When they attempted to re-book their flight, they were told that the next available flight for them to return to the USA would be April 28th....even if planes started flying tomorrow.

I use my wonderful travel benefits a lot, and I thank God that I am not vacationing in Europe right now. I was there in September, and December, and was planning to return in May. I am making other travel plans...and it’s not to Europe.

“How soon before the Mayan 2012 doomer cult picks up on this event and runs with it?”

It’s plain to see that something is different lately with all the natural disasters, and this volcano shutting down thousands of flights per day is eye opening. Not only is transportation affected, but livestock will die, crops will not grow, food will be scarce...already there are health concerns for the people.

I don’t believe the world will end in 2012, but I do believe, whom you call the “Mayan doomer cult,” feel that many will die, and those who survive will have to learn to live differently...back to “basics.”

We have Yellowstone.
