A seven-year-old Russian boy who was adopted by an American woman has been sent home on his own with a note saying he was no longer wanted.
Young Artem Savelyev arrived at Moscow airport with the typed note from his adoptive mother which said he was being abandoned after only six months in her care.
Torry-Ann Hansen had admitted to having made a mistake and suggested the boy should be re-housed.
"I no longer wish to parent this child," the unmarried 27-year-old nurse from Tennessee wrote, requesting his adoption be annulled.
She accused the boy's Siberian orphanage of misleading her about Artem's behavioural problems.
Hansen had placed sweets, biscuits and colouring pens in the child's rucksack before checking him onto the 10-hour flight as an unaccompanied minor, reportedly telling him he was going on an "excursion" to Moscow.

Adopting from Russia is an invitation to a lot of headaches and heartaches. The kids often have health and behavioral problems that are not disclosed to the adopting parents. The kids don’t get the love and attention they need as infants and toddlers, their Moms were drug addicts, alcoholics or hookers so while in the womb they were damaged etc
She wasn’t enough of an adult to do the job and she was not in possession of all the risks associated with it.
Poor kid
Russian orphanages and adoption workers have a reputation for being dishonest about the history and condition of the children they put up for adoption, and will first unload the most problematic children on adoptive parents from other countries. The serious issues which often require professional help don’t become fully evident until the children have spent a longer amount of time with the new parent(s).
I would like to know which airline took this child to Russia—unaccompanied. Having put grandkids on a plane from time to time, you have to have someone designated to meet the child—all papers must be in order, or the child does not board the plane.
I don’t see how it’s possible that all this boy had was was a typed message saying he was no longer wanted, and no one designated to meet the plane.
I am dubious about this. Foreign adoption is a hot political issue in Russia. Someone is playing this for political reasons.
Stupid question
since he was Russia and sent back would charges apply here?
I hope so and thanks for mentioning that
In Moscow anyway, you need to be a married couple to adopt (and yes, it needs to be a traditional married couple). We had to go before a judge in Moscow to adopt our daughter and we had to prove we were married, and have three references to tell how we met and what kind of parents we were.
The mother should be sent to Siberia on charges of child abandonment.
That’s as bad as dumping an animal, not even the guts to take it to a shelter.
She just put him on a plane alone, with a note...
What a horrible woman! Just selfish, gutless and plain horrible!
May she never have a guilt free moment again in her life.
Funny you should mention this. I just found this related article on what appears to be a Russia-friendly blog.
In Texas all a parent has to do, and I mean biological parent, is stand before a judge and say “I no longer can care for this child” and the child is off to DHS. The parent is off the hook.
I know a couple who kept getting kids from DHS, and believe me most are “damaged” in some way, and they would keep them for a while to see if they wanted to keep them. DHS allows this by allowing people to be foster parents. This couple went through a few before finally officially adopting two little girls. And from the story I’ve got a feeling they’re going to need some serious counseling. And that’s the story DHS tells. No tellin’ how much they left out. And sadly, this couple believes God will heal everything and counseling is showing a lack of faith. Gonna’ be some rough times ahead for all.
27 years old, single and adopting a 7 year old? Who wrote her homestudy? I have several friends who are single adoptive moms. However, they were older, well-established, and mature.
Usually, parents who want to disrupt an adoption find a home here with few problems. This is extreme.
I don’t doubt she was lied to in Russia. Been there, had it happen. It’s the Russian way.
Still a million kids in orphanages there through no fault of their own. Ussally it is vodka at the bottom ...
As a general rule, I stand by it - there are obvious exceptions - as in your case.
But I would hazard a guess that you or your situation are far from typical.
God bless you and your little ones.
There are two headlines currently running on MSN.com, one is about the unwanted Russian boy, and the other is about an orphaned baby seal getting a home. That, in a nutshell, describes what passes for ‘values’ in today’s America.
I hope this wasn’t single-mom Laura Ingraham.
Wow. She gave it a good try for 6 months./s
And, the child is not a Russian national. He became a US citizen upon entry into the US.

Wow, Russia sounds more like America than I ever thought possible.
Interesting, this letter states he is a “Russian National” - if she adopted him, wouldn’t he have become an American Citizen as soon as they landed here after the adoption.
I say this because when we brought our daughter home, she became an American Citizen the moment we landed at JFK.
She could only have gotten the child through an adoption agency, and apparently there are several who specialize in Russian children. There have been many problems with the children coming from Russian orphanages, as they are not paid much attention to while in their care. Many of the children have emotional and medical issues that have to be dealt with once they are in the US.
But this is inhuman. She is a nurse? If she had any decency at all she would have had ongoing communications with the adoption agency in the US and made arrangements through them, either to correct whatever problems he may have had, or to find another family that could have coped better with those issues. The resolutin was not to put the child on the plane and just ship him back to Russia.
