Underemployment Rises to 20.3% in March
Gallup ^ | 4/1/2010 | Jenny Marlar

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Gallup Daily tracking finds that 20.3% of the U.S. workforce was underemployed in March -- a slight uptick from the relatively flat January and February numbers.

These results are based on March interviews with more than 20,000 adults in the U.S. workforce, aged 18 and older. Gallup classifies respondents as underemployed if they are unemployed or working part-time but wanting full-time work. Gallup employment data are not seasonally adjusted.

A rise in the percentage of part-timers wanting to work full time (from 9.2% to 9.9%) is responsible for the March increase in underemployment. Unemployment saw a slight, but insignificant, decline in March.

Those with the capital to employ are afraid to invest because of the shenanigans going on in the White House. The per employee cost to an employer is going up, but nobody knows how high. Employing additional people is too risky given the meglamaniac in the White House.

You nailed that perfectly.

I have several friends who own businesses. Hiring is the last thing on their mind right now. If the climate improves they will rather pay overtime to existing employees than hire new.

Not only business hiring employees but staying afloat with massive new taxes and regulation. Major companies will weather the storm but small business will go under and start up business will become extinct in the coming months

The people that do have full time employment have been given a double workload to make up for those laid off. Hopefully some of the more dim-witted voters and union members are getting the message that Barry’s plans do not benefit the working and lower classes despite the cheerleading from all corners of the media and White House flunkies.

And just wait until all these part-timers are laid off because of Obamacare.

Does anybody really fill out the census forms? I put mine in the recycle bin. Now was that the green thing to do?

Alot of school teachers and support staff are being let go at the end of the school year. Declining revenue from property taxes because of declining property values.

I hate to say this, but I believe that America will literally need to hit 40% or more unemployment, in order for the dumb ass masses to finally wake up and realize that 0bozo the commie pig AND the socialist-demoRATs are destroying our country daily until they are marched out of Washington DC in chains, to the federal prisons or to the gallows for high crimes, treason & massive fraud against the America people.

Or there needs to be 12-14 states (led by Texas & Oklahoma) to secede from the Union in order to prevent their own states from being dragged down & into a Zimbabwe type of gubmint & socialist economy.

Our country needs to be purged of socialists & socialism if we hope to survive.

I have been hearing the same thing. I have some friends who are middle managers at large corps. No hiring there either.

Jobs, jobs, jobs - will you people quit crying please? Everyone I know is rich so I’m not sure what you’re complaining about.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to get back to the work of the American people raising their taxes and stealing their freedom.

“Connectivity Solutions Manufacturing plant in Millard will close, causing about 400 manufacturing employees left at the sprawling facility to lose their jobs, the plant’s parent company announced this morning.”

“John Morrell & Co. will cut about 1,450 positions when the company shutters its Sioux City pork plant in April.”

What’s going on in your neck of the woods?

It’s not just no hiring. Some professions have been destroyed with more to come as a direct result of this administration.

To the true 17-20% who are out of work, the number tomorrow (which will be spun as positive) is just going to make the unemployed and underemployed even more bitter.

Temp agencies here are making a killing. One company has 200 temps running the production lines. Only permanent (I use that word loosely) help is HR, accounting or receiving.

This is very common here. It is almost impossible to get a job except through a temp service. As you would guess, that means our “underemployment” rate is a lot higher than 20%.

Now kids (meaning you brilliant Dems), any idea of why this is happening? A slew of reasons, most all of them government interference. If you layoff a permanent employee you will spend a hell of a lot of money paying (65% of) the 18 months of COBRA the feds require.

Friend of mine is sales manager for a group of rental stores. He says they can’t afford to pay the employees they have, and thanks to the COBRA regs, they can’t afford to lay off any. Irony here is that this has the real potential to drive them out of business. Then *all* of the employees will be SOL for jobs and insurance. Thanks Washington! For making everyone equally miserable.

Keep illegals illegals, and do the black market employment thing, is what is going to happen. Why be forced to match health care costs and risk huge fines if the accounting is wrong for some reason?
