(CNSNews.com) Representative Michael Burgess (R-Texas) told CNSNews.com that if the mandate in the health care law requiring individuals to purchase health insurance or be penalized is upheld by the courts, the federal government could mandate anything, such as requiring all Americans to purchase a General Motors car.
On Capitol Hill, CNSNews.com asked Representative Burgess, The Congressional Budget Office has said that never before in the history of the United States has the federal government mandated that any one buy a specific good or service and, of course, the bill includes the individual mandate. Is there a part of the Constitution that you think gives Congress the authority to mandate individuals to purchase health insurance?

No thanks. I drive a Toyota.
I’ll keep my Toyota.
FUB0!!
I think Social Security is a mandated service we must purchase.
But anyway, if FedGov mandates we all buy a GM “environmentally sustainable” car, ya think they’ll call it The People’s Car, or would that remind us too strongly of the first proponent of national health care (and workmen’s comp and unemployment insurance)?
Yes they can.
Just like the campaign slogan.
Hope and Change = fascism.
Thank you for voting Democrat. :)
BTTT = directly to your excellent work!
That’s the argument you should use to attack it. The court ain’t gonna overturn this on state’s rights because it’s really hard to argue how this affects it under modern legal interpretations. This, on the other hand, could get them to throw it out with probably a few liberal justices joining in.
No $#!+
Obama takes over GM, destroys the competition with absurd stories of runaway cars, and forces us all into vehicles where Big Bro’ knows where we are and where we’ve been.
Today a caller told the Judge (& Brian who wasn’t there today) that we are paying medicare premiums out of our paychecks. The Judge said well that is news to me, I never heard of that! Now for such a SMART man, why didn’t he know this already?
Actually, the states have a very strong states' rights case, in that, under this law, they are mandated (forced) to set up and administer the public exchanges.
Next step will most likely be a requirement to buy a GM car. Never really have trusted Hairdoo Perry.
Democrats better be prepared for the GOP requiring everyone to have a chambered bullet in their M16 full automatic under their pillow at night.
And if you don’t, you get hit with a Income tax of 100%.
Monkey see, Monkey Do. This Health care bill is just as ridiculous to me.
No thanks.
While mandating the type of car we drive is important, I am wondering how long it will be before mandating an implanted chip will be a requirement for any health care?
I’ll walk first...or go horse and buggy. I’m considering becoming Amish anyway.
Wrong! The content is irrelevant! Any federal version of health care is unconstitutional since Article 1 Section 8 does not specifically grant Congress the power to regulate health care! The people are not bound to comply with an unconstitutional act! The people are the government, not the White House, not Congress and not SCOTUS! They operate at the consent of the governed and have the final say as to how they will be governed! People need to continually keep remind politicians of this fact!
