Experts: One-third of breast cancer is avoidable
Sacbee ^ | 3-25-10 | edcoil

Up to a third of breast cancer cases in Western countries could be avoided if women ate less and exercised more, researchers at a breast cancer conference said Thursday.

While better treatments, early diagnosis and mammogram screenings have dramatically slowed the disease, experts said the focus should now shift to changing behaviors like diet and physical activity.

There is also a study that shows too much exercise can cause cancer. The theory is that women who engage in long distance running and are obsessive about it, actually stress the immune system. It assumes the body is in an emergency type state. Cancer cells then multiply.

It almost sounds as if they’re looking for ways to cut the gov’t healthcare budget before it even gets started.

My wife has had breast cancer three times over the past 25 years. After the first surgery she has been very very diet and behaviour conscious. That did not prevent the next two rounds of cancer or the subsequent surgeries and treatments. Her oncologist finally did a BRAC work up and found that her tumors were the result of a known and well documented genetic cause. Her mother had died from the same cancer, but all of her sisters (3) tested negative for this sequence. Still, it was nice to know the real cause was not from cell phones, buttered popcorn or an extra 50lbs.

I am actually thankful that she had this cancer before the 'Health Care bill' was signed into law. At least we were able to get the treatment she needed. When she was diagnosed with the last set of tumors they said she was already stage 3. This automatically disqualified her for a lot of the 'programs' that are out there which are specifically for funding the treatment of breast cancer. The reason for denial is that 'statistically' her chances of survival were not that good because she had already reached stage 3. Translate : You are probably going to die and we don't want to waste the time/money on you.

That was 5 years ago and not only has she survived but she has passed every scan and subsequent test with flying colors. We got the treatment she needed through a Christian based hospital. We negotiated the price of every test and scan and procedure that was not covered by their care under a cash payment plan. It was not easy and it did take a lot of our savings, but she got the treatment she needed to beat it.

If this same scenario were to play out in the years to come I doubt that they would even 'allow' us to pursue that course. She would not fit the 'economic health profile' and so she wouldn't 'qualify' for the cost of treatment.

I am thankful we were able to make our decisions and pursue the choices that were best for my wife, not have some economic plan or business model dictate them to us.

Anyone know what the cancer rates in non-western countries is compared to Western?

Comparison between systems is so rife with structural errors as to be practically meaningless.

For instance, anybody in the UK who dies in a NIH hospital over the age of 56 is listed as dying of “Old Age”. I’m sure that helps their cancer numbers, considerably. And MRSI doesn’t show up hardly at all...

Glad to hear your wife has beaten it. I know a few women who are fighting hard now. Doctors can do so much more for breast cancer patients today than they ever could. But, it can be frustrating dealing with insurance companies. It would be even more frustrating dealing with the government.

Recently, my young son and I sat in on an economics course at a local college. The other students in the class were adults, and most were older than I am. Yet, many of them were in favor of gov’t-run healthcare. In one class, I was the only person arguing against it. People really do believe the gov’t will do a better job. They’re not even willing to entertain questions about it.

How hypocritical can the sacbee get??? The place that condones all many of deviant behavior that costs those practicing it 100’s of COMPLETELY avoidable medical problems, a lot of which are chronic or even deadly. Ask ANY EMT, emergency room employee, or doctor.

My two cents worth...

My wife has the the HER2 Protein with her breast cancer. This specific protein, once spotted, can be treated with Herceptin, which we do weekly.

The results so far are amazing. A 6 CM mass has nearly completely disappeared. Last week the doctor said he could no longer detect the growth. So now we are in ‘mop up time’

And now for today’s news on breast cancer:

“Losing breast is not always best for cancer patients”
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/26/AR2010032601436.html

Yes, now, today they’re telling us mastectomies might not be necessary.

There are always plenty of researchers doing studies. The news media decides which studies to bring to our attention.

All these years, the media has been pushing mammograms and surgery and telling us breast cancer is random and genetic. Now, suddenly and all at once, they’re choosing to focus on breast cancer studies showing fewer mammograms and less surgery are needed and suggesting the women themselves could’ve prevented it...? It’s very suspicious.

It’s almost as if they’re preparing us to be denied treatment and surgery.

I have no doubt that life expectancy in the US will be going down. But we won't really see those numbers for a while.

Less availablity
Lower quality
Higher costs

It's no wonder so many doctors are talking about leaving the profession -- they won't be allowed to do their best.

There are SO many factors that you can't rely on one study. For instance, if the patient is a gene carrier (BRAC1 / BRAC2). I don't think if one is a gene carrier, any oncologist would NOT recommend a mastectomy.

Who wants to go through life waiting for the "other shoe" to drop?

Agreed...all of these stories are nothing more than trial balloons to gage reaction for when the begin denying coverage. I am convinced that they are going after women and breast cancer first...be ready.

I think it’s a mix: suspicions as raised may be fair, but also suspicions that expensive mammography machine sales and investments were driving previous recommendations.

Don't believe all the gov. lies about living longer....facts are a b*tch. Want them? Look at the obituary section of your local newspaper...and all the baby-boomers dropping like flies...I was shocked just looking at the FreeRepublic Memorial Wall....there are a lot of our brothers and sisters who never made it anywhere near their "golden years"....well, at least where age is concerned.

There are only a few certainties in this world....gov. and media telling people the truth is definitely NOT one of them.
