One Thing That's 100% Guaranteed: The Healthcare Bill Will NEVER Be Repealed

Already Republicans plan on introducing a bill this week to repeal last night's historic healthcare vote.
Obviously that's going nowhere.
But looking out, Republicans will probably try to run on repeal in the runup until November. It's possible that will play okay at the ballot (we don't know) but anyone who thinks this is a realistic prospect is smoking something illegal.
First of all, to repeal the vote would be just as difficult legislatively as passing healthcare was, so just think of how hard that was. Republicans would need 60 pro-repeal votes in the Senate to defeat a Democratic filibuster. And remember, they'd need a President who wouldn't veto the bill (i.e. not Obama or any Democrat).
But even that's putting too fine a point on it. Here's the real story, and it gets down to the fact that this new bureaucratic superstructure is now permanently ossified into our federal government.

“There’s just no way to repeal benefits. Even if people don’t seem to like the new plan, there’s no way a politician successfully runs on some combination of: let’s go back to when insurance companies could exclude you for pre-existing conditions and let’s go back to when your kid gets kicked off your healthcare plan the moment he or she gets out of college.”
A lot of people thought they were entitled to their slaves as property.
A lot of people thought the States were entitled to Senators (appointed by the States, not elected).
A lot of people thought they were entitled to all their wages (till the income tax and social security)
A lot of people thought they were entitled to Social Security at age 65 till they changed the age.
A lot of people thought they were entitled to alcoholic beverages and recreational drugs of choice.
A lot of people thought they were entitled to ownership of their real estate till the Kelo decision.
A lot of people thought they were entitled to Medicaid and Medicare until the cuts.
As far as “let’s go back”, we don’t have to go back to what it was and shouldn’t.
We should do better.
That includes asking questions like:
Why shouldn’t an insurance company exclude someone who never bothered with insurance till they needed expensive medical care?
Why should an insurance company be allowed to exclude someone who has a pre-exisiting condition but had insurance they had to leave behind with a job change or a move or something legitimate?
Why should so much of our health insurance be provided through employers? Why shouldn’t we get the money they contribute and then purchase our own health insurance, ultimately getting the health care we deserve even if it kills us.
And there are a whole slew of other questions to be addressed.
RATS are killed by RAT POISON.......When enough RATS “come up missing” others may get the message.
This huge leap in the Federal intrusion into the health care system will never be repealed because -- contrary to all of the posturing over the last few months -- both Democrats and Republicans are 100% on board with it.
The purpose of this whole charade was to get the Federal government to pick up a bigger chunk of a major expense that is currently being carried by private industry. You will NEVER get enough money and political momentum to go back on this.
If you need any evidence of this, just remember that the stupid Medicare prescription drug program from 2003/2004 was passed by a GOP-controlled House and a GOP-controlled Senate . . . and signed into law by a Republican president.
A Republican Congress does not have to fund this monstrosity. They do not have to fund the salaries of the additional IRS agent. They can also repeal the tax increases.
Well times are changing people are waking up...Look at the polls today in newspapers people hate this...we take back the senate and house one seat at a time...There is no reason the people can not get a majority in both house by 2012 and repeal it in 2013
A long time ago I learned the phrase,”NEVER SAY NEVER”
close and shuttering of business is the only way. Anarchy is here.
Your analysis is correct. Legislative repeal is virtually impossible even with a GOP President. It would have to come through the courts and Obama will likely get two or three more appointees to the Supremes before he goes.
The title of the thread (and the underlying article) concerns Congressional "repeal" not judicial "gutting." I agree there is a really good chance that the SCOTUS will eventually invalidate large portions of the law before it actually goes into effect, and as result, the remaining portions will be meaningless. The big question is whether a judge will issue a preliminary injunction barring the tax increases that go into effect immediately while the constitutional issues work through the court system.
As for repeal by act of Congress -- It's not going to happen, not as long as we have the likes of Collins, Snow, Graham, and McLame on our side.
Repealing this monstrosity in 2013 will result in a situation where employers no longer provide medical insurance for their employees as a matter of course. This is the beauty of a government-run health care system, as far as all the CEOs of major U.S. companies are concerned. Uncle Sam takes on the responsibility of managing this huge cost for them . . . and any repeal of the bill sure as hell is not going to force these companies to go back to what was the norm up until today.
Repealing this bill in 2013 will not put U.S. employers back in the business of providing medical insurance for their workers . . . it will simply mean that people will be forced to pay their own medical bills. I can guarantee you that many of these "outraged" people who are supposedly "waking up" right now will be adamantly opposed to any attempt to do such a thing.
I don’t think we are going to have to repeal it, it will be knocked down as unconstitutional.
I agree with this post’s premise, this won’t be repealed.
The constitutionality of the mandates will be successfully challenged in court, however, the new taxes, subsidies, controls, and regulations will stay in place.
Also given the market’s big bounce today, I think I have to admit to myself at this point that, that my distaste for the bill puts me in a minority.
Nonsense. Is going to be hard but we have to win. There is no other option.
See my comments in #104 and #107. The U.S. stock market loves this bill -- and for good reason.
I'm suprised at the markets but, they're off their highs so far. See here.
Exactly right. THAT is why the Dem leadership was willing to risk losing Congress and the White House over this bill. They knew it would never be repealed. Imagine running as a Republican against the bleating media who will accuse you of “taking away heath care!”. Same with Social Security and Medicaid. There is only one way to cure this, and it’s not through elections. Not anymore.
Obama and the entire Democrat Party have exposed themselves for what they are-left wing thugs
They may not recover for an entire generation.
Just as the Kanas-Nebraska act destroyed the Northern Democrat Party, this will destroy the Democrat Party in the South and West.
What, are you saying it may be time to refresh the Tree of Liberty?
