Opinion: Health Care Bill: Bart Stupak 'Limits the Harm'
Catholic Online ^ | 3/21/10 | Deacon Keith Fournier

Posted on 03/21/2010 4:06:43 PM PDT by tcg

...what has been clear throughout this extraordinary historic debate was that Congressman Bart Stupak was a faithful Catholic and a faithful Pro-Life DEMOCRATIC Congressman who refused to compromise on the first priniciples.

He has always supported the Health Care Reform package. He is, after all, a Democrat. He simply refused to compromise on the fundamental human rights issue of our age, the Right to Life. For that, he should be honored and thanked by all Pro-Life people.Even if he is wrong.

I was not surprised when he made his announcement. He was surrounded by other Pro-Life Democrats who had made the same decision with him.

He spoke of the "greement we have been able to reach" with the President. That agreement entails the issuing of what he called an "extensive" Executive order by the President immediately upon the passage of this legislation. He honestly believes that with this Executive Order, the current Hyde Amendment language will be protected in the law. He is confident that this Executive Order will ensure that the fatal flaw with this legislation, clearly set forth by the US Bishops, which undermined the fundamental Human Right to Life, will be cured. As a Constitutional lawyer, I strongly doubt it. Though I live in Virginia, I am, to use the old adage I'm from Missouri, show me!

I do not agree with this legislation for many important procedural, constitutional and substantive reasons. However, the first and fundamental reason I opposed it was that it DID indeed open up Federal funds for the killing of innocent children. If it did not, why is the President of the United States signing an Executive Order to cure the Bill?

Congressman Bart Stupak is a faithful Catholic. He is also wrong.Congressman Bart Stupak has at least "limited the harm" done by this Legislation. He has "lessened its negative consequences". He has acted in a faithful way as a faithful Catholic Christian in public life. For that he should be commended. Even if, like me, you disagree with his ultimate decision.

An executive order cannot override the law and the current Senate bill will likely be law within 24 hours. Sorry Stupak, but even your 30 pieces of silver will be exposed as counterfeit soon.

Bart had a town hall meeting in cheboygan Mich last fall, and he got into a heated argument with the prolifers, and admitted he would vote for the bill with the abortion funding in it, way back then... this was all grand standing on his part.. his 15 minutes of fame are over.. it is time to remember him in November.

I disagree. He may have been a faithfull Catholic and I would have considered him a hero if he had stuck to his guns. However, to sell out the unborn for a worthless scrap of paper is nothing less than a betrayal. If he follows through and votes for this bill then he is neither pro life nor Catholic.

If the executive order overrides the legislation then why even have legislation at all? The President can just declare whatever he wants.

A faithful Catholic would have voted NO on the bill.

May he enjoy hell because unless he votes NO on this legislation that’s exactly where he’ll spend his eternity after life.

Nonsense. Typical liberal Catholic propaganda. Another Catholic who is clueless about Catholic history. How Catholic suffered at the hands of Muslims and how Catholics saved Europe.

Stupak sold out to a Msulim on a Sunday so babies could get killed. Get screwed padre.

I am just so distressed that people who consider themselves “faithful Catholics” in leadership positions aren’t properly educated to think and execute faithful decisions!!!!

The EO is worthless and Stupak knows it, he has not lessened the harm in any way. Epic fail on his part, and epic support of abortion is the result.

There’s actually a FReeper who suggested sending money to no-voting RATs as a show of gratitude. Can you believe it? I guess some of us still insist on playing by Marquis of Queensbury rules while our opponents don’t play by any rules.

I’ll go further and add that I think Deacon Fournier has disgraced himself by this article and defamed the Catholic Religion.

If he put God and the sanctity of life first, he would have never become a Rat.
