A Palm Springs man who wore a Marine Corps uniform with medals and bragged about fighting in a battle in Iraq was sentenced Monday to a year of probation, authorities said.
Steven Douglas Burton, 39, was also ordered to pay a $250 fine and a $25 sentencing assessment by U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips in Riverside, authorities said.
In his plea agreement, Burton admitted to wearing the uniform and medals on several occasions, including at least two Halloween parties and his 20-year high school reunion in Martinez in the Bay Area, said Assistant U.S. Atty. Joseph Akrotirianakis, who prosecuted the case.
Burton pleaded guilty in December to violating a federal law prohibiting the unauthorized wearing of a U.S. military uniform. The medals that he wore on his uniform included the Navy Cross, authorities said.

I can’t believe they let that turkey off that lightly. It’s outrageous!
Would you smack a crying man?
This one, yes. :)
The guy should have gone to jail. Period.
I was thinking about 6 months hard labor on a Marine Corp base..
who’s button is he wearing?....can anyone do a CSI and blow it up?...*grins*...be a riot if it’s Kerry’S
He should be sentenced to clean bedpans at Walter Reed for a year.
IIRC from the original story, that photo was taken at a class reunion, and that's just the reunion's "Hello, my name is..." sticker. I could be wrong, but I seem to recall discussing this before.
“He should have been sentenced to 10 minutes in a closed room with real Marines.

OoooRah!
Agreed.
If it’s a high school reunion I’m pretty sure it’s a button with a picture of himself during high school. The woman next to him is wearing one as well.
I’d turn him over to my sister in law, Shawn, who had one of these dispicable creeps at her Marine Lieutenants funeral.
Make him empty bedpans in Bethesda ...
Wow, seven rows of ribbons, this Marine was well traveled. Too bad no Marine knew of him, a regular hero. Couldn’t make out the rank he had given himself, but he is wearing an officers tunic. How many grenades did he throw himself on to save his buddies?
“PHONY SOLDIER!”
String him up by his testes! Oh, wait, he doesn’t have any!
Phoney Marine
but to wear the Navy Cross
Missed that, eight rows of ribbons with a Navy Cross on top. Shoosh.
The best punishment would have been a years worth of cleaning heads for active duty Marines. Hell, he is just down the road from 29 Palms, how did he think he would go unnoticed? Did he not notice an goodly amount of retired Marines living in the Palm Springs area, much less the active duty in the area?
He must have been very unhappy with the outcome of his life to seek this masquerade.
