ID Card for Workers Is at Center of Immigration Plan
WallStreetJournal.com ^ | 3-9-2010 | Laura Meckler

Lawmakers working to craft a new comprehensive immigration bill have settled on a way to prevent employers from hiring illegal immigrants: a national biometric identification card all American workers would eventually be required to obtain.

Under the potentially controversial plan still taking shape in the Senate, all legal U.S. workers, including citizens and immigrants, would be issued an ID card with embedded information, such as fingerprints, to tie the card to the worker.

The ID card plan is one of several steps advocates of an immigration overhaul are taking to address concerns that have defeated similar bills in the past.

The uphill effort to pass a bill is being led by Sens. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), who plan to meet with President Barack Obama as soon as this week to update him on their work. An administration official said the White House had no position on the biometric card.

"It's the nub of solving the immigration dilemma politically speaking," Mr. Schumer said in an interview. The card, he said, would directly answer concerns that after legislation is signed, another wave of illegal immigrants would arrive. "If you say they can't get a job when they come here, you'll stop it."

"I see a whole new cottage industry of fake ID’s."

In Los Angeles (downtown) this would just be an extension to the cottage industry of fake alien ID's. Out on the street, they've been doing that for decades.

What is wrong with the online check that Bush enacted that 0bama and others have, I think, squelched?

They propose a solution they know Americans will balk at, because they really don’t want to solve the problem.

Meanwhile, they ignore a simple solution that is already in place. Everyone has to supply a SSN to work. The government already has a list of the all SSNs and the valid name that goes with it. If an employer hires a new employee and the SSN and name don’t match, then there is a 99% chance they are using that SSN illegally (and are an illegal immigrant).

If the SSN and name don’t match, the employer has 30 days to correct it or they must terminate the employee. Simple, easy, and it would work.

But no, we can’t do the simple thing that would work, because WE REALLY DON’T WANT TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

That’s what I’m wondering. But I’d rather prevent such legislation. I don’t want to see a foreign voting base sprout up overnight and put the chill in safe borders speech.

Yep. Cause and effect will see to it that we don't have either if we allow these kinds of things to happen.

Agreed. But the reference to Fort Sumter is that WE won’t lose the moral high ground by firing the first shot. Katrina and Waco mean we will NOT give ground any more. Ever.

Not getting into the issues of Police State or Revelation (both of which a NATIONAL ID would enable, do you really think that a NATIONAL ID card system won’t allow for mass fraud?! Like gun-control, the honest law-abiding citizens will acquiesce to the card; meanwhile, illegals and ACORN will likely continue to flout the law.

Why another NEW program to administer? Why not have folks produce their local voter registration card, proof of address, birth certificate, etc. for work and voting? Why national? Why more government control as they have a lousy track record for anything.

Invasion of privacy issues notwithstanding, can you imagine the COST of this program? Very ill-timed IMHO.

Not that it would matter with the Washington crowd, but does anyone know if a National ID card violates Constitution?

I missed this article when first posted and read it at the doctor’s office this morning. I remembered to try to post it and see several threads but none over 100 posts and did not see it online during the business day (sidebar thread).

This needs more exposure. NO on amnesty and NO on Big Brother’s latest national ID card scheme.

Until the local police jetison their “will not book” policy where they suspect a traffic offender to be an illegal immigrant, it does not even “pay” to be a legal citizen (born or legal immigrant) of this nation.
