Sarah Palin invokes him. Mitt Romney glorifies him. The "tea party" movement hopes to recapture him. And the Republican Party still can't get over him.
Six years after his death, and almost a century since his birth, conservatives are more transfixed than ever by Ronald Reagan, so much so that I fully expect a Gipper anxiety disorder to appear in the next edition of the psychiatrists' diagnostic manual.
"What would Reagan Do?" is a leading motto for the right. You can get the slogan -- or its WWRD acronym -- on a bumper sticker, a T-shirt, a coffee mug, a thong. There's even an iReagan app for your phone. And having renamed Washington National Airport for Reagan in the 1990s, last week congressional Republicans started agitating to have the Gipper replace poor Ulysses S. Grant on the $50 bill.
Such obsessions are not unique to the right: Writing three years after the death of Franklin Roosevelt, historian Richard Hofstadter noted that FDR so thoroughly monopolized the liberal imagination that his passing "left American liberalism demoralized and all but helpless." But today, conservatives are the helpless ones.
Reagan was the most popular and successful Republican president of the past century, so it makes sense that he would be the shining model for conservatives, just as FDR has been the gold standard for liberals. (No small irony, since Reagan voted for FDR four times and modeled his statecraft after the Democrat's.) But as the current occupant of the White House could warn, measuring yourself against historical icons is a recipe for disappointment. These days, President Obama is more likely to draw comparisons to Jimmy Carter than to Lincoln or FDR.
Yet ambitious conservatives are undeterred.

It’s where you’ve got to respect that element of Biden’s hair that is more natural than Romney’s!
Yes, and his VP, old GHWB was one of the worse, he and Barbara both looked down their noses at Ron and Nancy.I never have figured how he got stuck with him as his running mate.
Not sure what you are talking about, but he's had those grey temples going clear back as head of the Olympics in Salt Lake.
I agree Al B.
He had his hair completely and unnaturally dyed black through his time as gov, now he’s starting to let the full white show on the edges in the same way his dad did. He’s emulated his dad it seems in yet one more way, that’s all. Just a casual observation since it seems to match the other ways he’s followed in his footsteps.
Women, yes even Palin use makeup to look younger. Men sometimes get rid of some grey for the same reason.
Hair plugs on Biden is much different. To me that would equate to a woman wearing a wig.
BTW, do you have photo evidence, before and after, of his time as Gov. when he died his hair unnaturally black?
You betcha!!!
He would crawl over broken glass and through razor wire to do so.
You’re damn straight. LOL
“And all teed upthe Mittster!”
If the pubbies nominate him, they deserve to collapse and blow away on a vagrant wind.
I understand that. But have they lost to such a sad sack candidate as McCain?
And Huckabee tooling together to that end... What they did on Super Tuesday against Mitt was classic. I blame Obama’s win on the Mormon hating Huckster.
I'm no fan of Huckabee, either. But a serious Republican candidate should've been able to beat a couple of lightweights like Huckabee and McCain together, with one hand tied behind his back.
Romney never found a way to do it.
“after George Romney lost the nomination to Barry Goldwater at the Republican convention 800-40, he stormed out of the convention, young Mitt in tow and worked with the Democrats against Goldwater and helped Johnson win the election...”
That’s exactly what Mitt Romney did in 2008 attacking Palin with his campaign operatives absorbed into the McCain campaign, leaking to the media, slandering Palin, all to cause McCain to lose and for b. hussein to win, America be damned. I wonder if anyone will ask Romney if he has “No Apology” for that?
I blame Obamas win on the Mormon hating Huckster.

What did Mike Huckabee do that was so “hateful” to the mormons ???
All Mike Huckabee said was the truth...
Huckabee said that mormons believe that Jesus and Lucifer were brothers and that God was the father of them both...
Its wrong of course but mormons believe it and teach it...
Do mormons hate the truth ???
Here's Huckabee’s standard mode of operation:
Huck: “Let's keep this discussion about the issues please, Mormonism in not relevant to politics.”
Huck two hours later: “By the way, did I mention Mitt is a Mormon?”
Those who refuse to see him for what he did want the same end to what he did.
Romney was lying but the accusation stuck at a time when the Republicans did not want to be seen as a party of exclusion...
Goldwater did vote against the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
You can look it up.
That's why Romney opposed him.
Huckabees distain for Mormonism
_________________________________________
Oh I wouldnt give Huckabee that much credit for wisdom...
But you can if you like..
hThankfully, Huckabee is not alone...
Its also Jesus’s distain for mormonism...
and the distain of every Bible beleving Christian...
Lucifer was not and is not the brother of the Biblical Jesus...
Jesus is and always was, God, the Word of God, the Logos, God become flesh...the Alpha and Omega..
Jesus is the ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD...Lucifer was not and is not a son of God...
Lucifer was an angel, a created being...Jesus created Lucifer...
Lucifer was stupid and got himself tossed out of Heaven...
Jesus came down from Heaven and returned to Heaven...
Huckabee was right...
the mormons slandered Huckabee because he told the truth about their unBiblical cult...
I rest my case.
