Snips: After a week marred with violence along the U.S./Mexico border sources admit the Mexican drug cartels have placed a $250 thousand bounty for the kidnapping or murder of Border Patrol Agents.

  The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a warning to law enforcement officers in west Texas due to retaliatory killings by a Mexican gang. The agency has suggested agents’ change up their routes and wears body armor while on duty.

Latin American gangs can breed new form of terrorism

The threat to our national security has been heightened by the willingness of gangs, with strong connections to Latin America, to assist with possible terrorist attacks against the United States. Most of the gang related violence in Latin America is concentrated in Central America. The two leading gangs in Central America that pose an emerging threat to the United States are M-18 and MS-13. Their capability to smuggle people, drugs, and weapons into the U.S. makes them an asset to be contracted by possible terrorist organizations. In addition, they often engage in violent acts such as extortion, murder, and kidnapping. Due to the fact that most Central American governments spend most of their time dealing with poverty, corruption, and high unemployment rate, they have neither the resources nor the time to focus on anti-gang initiatives. In Mexico and Central America, it is difficult to gather information on how many members these gangs have, but some reports state that there could be anywhere between 70,000 to 100,000 gang members in the region. Across the United States, there are approximately 50,000 M-18 members and 10,000 MS-13 members. Regardless of the amount of gang members that exist, their influence and presence in the western hemisphere should be a cause of concern. Terrorist cells need only a few gang members to support them to be effective in carrying out their attacks. In addition, these gang members tend to have anti-American sentiments, making them easy to be recruited by terrorist organizations that can pose a threat to our national security.

Undocumented immigrant sues Harris County for millions

An undocumented immigrant is suing Harris County for $30 million two years after he was accused and jailed in the death of a Harris County Sheriff's deputy.

In February of 2008, Jose Vieyra was arrested and charged with the negligent homicide of Deputy Craig Miller following a crash on the Katy Freeway. The charges were later dropped after an investigation revealed Deputy Miller should not have been behind the wheel because he was legally drunk at the time.

Criminal defense attorney Emily Munoz, whom 39News consulted on this case, said although Vieyra was illegally in the United States at the time of the incident, on an expired work visa, he has the right to sue.
