“tv tickers here in maui says tsunami warning for hawaii (big maybe) at 11:19 am tomorrow”

Oh crap! We got a condo on Kaanapali, but that’s on the leeward side of the island so it should be OK. I’ve seen photographs of past tsunamis on Ohau and the devistaion has been horrible.

I clicked on that Fox News Talk link. Nothing but lefties talking about how wonderful socialist healthcare is. Perhaps the other media will have something live. I'm almost tempted to drag out the short wave radio.

Yes. It is very large. I will hope for the bestm, but it is faily close to a major Chilean city.

Google Earth shows small towns within about 2 miles of the epicenter. Large cities are within about 20 miles.

This is going to be bad.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Yeah, were looking at several maps now

It is a foreshock to a really big one. It’s just a matter of when.

Yes...one of these days the world will shake mightily. I hope I'm gone before then.

Prayers up for all down in Chile and those in harm's way from any potential tsunami activity.

Haiti was a 7.2(?) but shallower at only 18km down, with an Intesity of X (Extreme) across the city of Port of Prince and more. I think, hopefully, the folks in Chile will fare much better.

Dumb question — which shore of Maui is at risk?

As the crow flys so to speak, I would say the Road to Hana area. I would think the south side would be protected by the big Island

To: U.S. West Coast, Alaska, and British Columbia coastal regions
From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center
Subject: Tsunami Information Statement #1 issued 02/26/2010 at 10:49PM PST

A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas.

A tsunami may have been generated that could potentially impact the U.S. west coast, British Columbia, and Alaska. The West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center is investigating the event to determine the level of danger. More information will be issued as it becomes available.

At 10:34 PM Pacific Standard Time on February 26, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 8.5 occurred near the coast of central Chile . (Refer to the United States Geological Survey for official earthquake parameters.)

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii will issue a tsunami warning for regions near the epicenter.

Messages will continue to be issued hourly by the WCATWC until the event status is upgraded to a warning or advisory, or until the center has determined that the event poses no threat to the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. See the WCATWC web site for basic tsunami information, safety rules, and a tsunami travel time map and table. (NOTE: Travel time maps and tables indicate forecasted times only, not that a wave dangerous to the U.S. and Canadian coasts was generated.)

"Wow. We’ve had 3 recent earthquakes. Haiti, Japan, and now Chili. " dont forget the swarms in Yellowstone .

WOW this had to be a whopper ! hopefully the area of effected structures containing people was in rock zones and not on liquefaction or fill. They said it lasted 10 seconds
