Washed away??? Seriously? Is that just a description or has the island literally been taken out?

Besides that- it was the middle of the night when people were sleeping.

The tsunmi waves could last up to six hours.

I had no idea that tsumani waves could last that long.

“Some residents looted pharmacies and a collapsed grains silo, hauling off bags of wheat, television images showed”

I will probably get flamed, but this is a true SHTF moment and I would be hauling off medicine and bags of grain myself. Survival is a bitch. And if we want to get technical, if that grain silo is collapsed, the insurance would cover it and it wouldn’t be fit for sale anyway. Same for the medicine in the pharmacy.

Yep, that isn’t looterguy hauling off beer (although in a SHTF moment, some beer wouldn’t be bad either, LOL), I would be a looter if I didn’t have my own paranoid stash as I do now.

Great map!

The White House is “closely monitoring” the aftermath of a massive earthquake that shook Chile on Saturday that killed at least 78 people, press secretary Robert Gibbs said.

The quake destroyed several buildings and has reportedly triggered a tsunami.

“We are closely monitoring the situation, including the potential for a tsunami. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Chile, and we stand ready to help in this hour of need,” according to a White House pool report.

Relentless- I just looked at the map and you can’t even see how many little squares there are on top of that area.

Talking to someone IN Chile right now. He says that there have been at least 10 aftershocks in 8 hours, many deaths, and they are being told that more earthquakes are coming. He says that the south of the country is falling apart. Not sure what he means by that... But a lot of damage most likely.

A tsunami advisory was issued for the coast of California and an Alaskan coastal area from Kodiak to Attu islands.

An advisory means there may be strong currents, but that widespread inundation is not expected to occur.

Jordan Scott, a spokesman for the California Office of Emergency Management, said the state was monitoring the situation and that it’s up to local communities to prepare.

I see your point, but I think Chileans appreciate it when foreigners make the effort. I know it ticks me off to hear folks in Arabian countries refer to the U.S. as "Ameriqi".

Are they saying this when addressing you in English about the United States? If not, your ticked-offness is misplaced. If I were to hear the president of the Dominican Republic give a speech to Dominicans about the United States, I wouldn't think he was making an effort if he said "los United States" instead of "los Estados Unidos." He would be making a linguistic gaffe. The same is true of a U.S. president referring to Japan as Nippon or China as Zhongguo or Italy as Italia, etc., etc., etc..

CNN video from Talcahuano, Chile along the coast shows water well inland into the town, the buoy registerd 7.7 feet, the actual tsunami had to be a fair amount higher to send water so far inland.
