CARSON CITY Most of Nevadas government will soon transition to a four-day workweek. But the reasons for it go beyond filling the states $887 million deficit.
The plan, proposed by Gov. Jim Gibbons and broadly supported by legislators, will save $600,000 on energy costs, make it easier to implement a 10-hour-a-month furlough for state workers and lift their flagging morale.
But legislative sources point to another reason even if theyre loath to admit it publicly for this major change: The reduction in the availability of state services will make the public feel the effect of the revenue shortfall.
Its a potentially controversial, if intriguing, strategy.
Legislators and lobbyists are predicting a contentious session as lawmakers will likely undertake realigning the states tax structure, including tax increases. To build support for higher taxes, some think the public needs to see the effects of the current shortage in tax revenue.

I truly believe that in the current recession most businesses could benefit from this model.
Less money but more time with your family.
Flagging morale?
Welcome to employment in 2010.
I doubt I would notice a 50% in State Govt "services" where I live.
ML/NJ
LOL me too. Those receiving the "services" are not those who are paying for them.
90% reduction in Government harrassment would be fine with me.
This is the petulant "they'll miss me when I'm gone" strategy. However, they failed to account for one thing. What if they're not missed?
“flagging morale”....Aaawwwww! Cue the violins. I’m sure the 20% of Americans unemployed or underemployed are very saddened.
LOL...yeah that's gonna work!
The problem is that the ones paying the "higher taxes" are almost never the ones who are demanding the "services." So you have a lot of mouthy lazy do nothings with time on their hands to protest cuts in government largess, while the tax payers are working their a$$es off to take care of their families' needs.
1.5 million people attended Obama's inauguration, 412 missed work.
Let’s try a 0 day work week and see how business responds.
If there’s a single “Code Enforcement Officer” still snapping to attention and rushing to knock on your door because an imaginary “neighbor” complained about the height of your grass or that you were working on your timing belt in your driveway for three days, they ain’t serious.
