Joseph Stack had barely finished flying his airplane into a Texas office building when the battle over his legacy began.
Bloggers on the left asked why people especially people on the right werent calling him a terrorist. If this had been done by a brownish-looking Muslim guy whose suicide note paralleled Islamist political themes, wrote Matthew Yglesias, then right wingers would be demanding that anyone who refused to label the attack terrorism be put up on treason charges.
Bloggers on the right, such as Conn Carroll, asked why people especially people on the left were acting as if Stack was a conservative Tea Party nut when the anti-tax animus that led him to point his plane at I.R.S. offices was only one part of an eclectic ideology.
These are arguments worth having, for two reasons.
Joseph Stack saw himself as part of a cause, as one in a long line of fighters against tyranny.
First, the label terrorist shapes our immediate response to attacks and our long-term policies. Weve invaded countries and altered domestic surveillance laws as part of a war on terror, whereas we wouldnt do such things as part of a war on a nut who flew his plane into a building and is dead now.
Second, given the apparent momentum of the Tea Party movement, it would be nice to know if Stacks kamikaze mission was a not-all-that-shocking emanation from it whether, as some claim, more than a few Tea Partiers are unhinged.
In common usage, a terrorist is someone who attacks in the name of a political cause and aims to spread terror to foster fear that such attacks will be repeated until grievances are addressed.

He was a terrorist and a nutjob, there I said it. And, by the way, so are all commie pinko progressives who want to use force to control our lives.
What took ‘em so long....looking for ways to plagiarize somebody else’s work before writing their own drek?
What does ‘from each according to his ability, to each according to his need; from each according to his gullibility, to each according to his greed’ (the end of Stack’s Manifesto) have to do with Capitalism and the Tea Parties??? Big Media needs to stop LYING about Conservatives.
Stack had communist and socialist ravings in his writings.
Pure character assassination by the evil NY Slimes.
Kiss my @$$ NY Slimes.
Well gee NYT if you want to go there..lets party.
How about Zeros PERSONAL TERRORISTS Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn.
I suppose all the rhetoric from sundry commies like Stern, “if we can’t get what we want through the power of persuasion..we will use the persuasion of power”
Need I go on.
We even have VIDEO of the threats from the Obama syncophants.
Game on NYT..you (^*^&%(^&$ idiots.
I didn’t now that the Tea Party used Marx as a mascot, wanted National Health Care and hated Bush....
Joseph Stack was a tax cheating baby-boomer with an entitlement complex.
Stack was a terrorist.
BUT - He was a communist terrorist, not a Tea Party Member.
Stack believed that the IRS was a tool used by rich oligarchs to persecute and keep down the common man, while protecting the wealthy elite.
He viewed the IRS as a tool of the Rich.
He saw the hypocracy of Charlie Rangel, and Secretary Geitner getting sweet deals - and compared that to his experience of having a 10k fine for missing a small amount of money as unreported income.
Mr. Stack as not a right-wing tea party member.
He was a left-wing radical.
Leave it to the New York Slime to print garbage that misses the truth, misinformed, and gives cover to the left-wing progressive idiots in the media to lie about the truth.
Maybe the folks at the slimes are even more unhinged than usual because they are fearful of losing their jobs and become abusive at home as dingy harry supposes.
What then was that Amy Professor gal? Did the NYTimes call her out as a DEMOCRAT terrorist????
BINGO
I said on the day of the incident that it was terrorism even if it was committed by a redneck hillbilly before we knew the identity of the culprit.
Since the Slimes has failed to note Stack’s party affiliation, one can assume he was a registered Democrat.
Wondering out loud if all or just some of the NYSlimes are pedophiles?
Just asking...
The NY Times needs to be put out of its misery.
Even their masthead proclaims “all the lies that fit in print”.
To clear thing up, maybe we need to explain that the “War on Terrorism” is actually a euphemism for “War on Islamism” - the country being too cowardly to use the second, real term.
