Iran navy launches domestically made destroyer
(AFP) 3 hours ago
TEHRAN Iran's navy on Friday has launched in the Gulf its first domestically made destroyer in a ceremony attend by the supreme leader and the commander-in-chief Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the media reported.
"Iran's navy on Friday took the delivery of the first indigenously designed and developed guided missile destroyer "Jamaran" in the Persian Gulf," Iran's English-language Press TV reported.
The vessel has a displacement of around 14,000 tonnes and is equipped with modern radars and electronic warfare capabilities, the report said.
"Jamaran, a multi-mission destroyer, can carry 120-140 personnel on board and is armed with a variety of anti-ship and surface-to-air missiles with a top speed of up to 30 knots and has a helipad," the report added. "The vessel has also been equipped with torpedoes and modern naval cannons."
State television also showed footage of the vessel and the ceremony at which it was launched by Khamenei flanked by the top Iranian military commanders.
Much of Iran's naval equipment dates from before the 1979 Islamic revolution and is US made. Since the revolution, Tehran has purchased a number of Russian-made submarines.
In the past year Iranian navy has carried out a number of missions in the Gulf of Aden and offshore Somalia where it was commissioned to escort Iranian merchant ships and oil tankers.

That makes more sense.
Pretty small crew for a 14,000 ton displacement. I think somebody added a Zero somewhere. Sounds more like a patrol craft in conception. I’m guessing 1,400 ton displacement. Looks small, too.
The lesson of the story is that while they may not be Japan in the 1930s, they aren’t goat-herding rubes either. People don’t take Iran seriously as a threat, at their own peril.
No doubt. I'm sure this is an error by the brain dead journos at AP. Ship displacement is always quoted in long tons. By comparison, the new Littoral Combat Ships are somewhere around 3K long tons. There's NO WAY this "destroyer" (apologies to real destroyers everywhere) is any heavier than the littoral ships, which are some 70 feet longer.
1,400 metric tons and 94 meters (about 300 feet) long is about the size of an old World War I-era "four-stacker" USN destroyer. It's a huge stretch to call I'manutjob's new bath toy a "destroyer," maybe even a "frigate." It sounds like a large coastal patrol craft--which, honestly, considering the Persian Gulf isn't that huge, is more useful for a government like Iran than a bigger ship. It doesn't have to be big to be dangerous.

The object on B deck appears to be too rectangular and straightedged to be a functional weapons system. I suspect it could be a test structure to see if a Chinese HQ-7 SAM launcher will fit in the space.
The "indigenously designed and developed guided missile destroyer Jamaran (AKA Mowj class) looks to be developed from the Mk5 (Apparently the Iranians have only two surface combatant groups: "little vessels" and "ship-breakers" - translation should be obvious)
Raising the displacement from 1100 to 1400 tons by increasing the beam gives the stability to allow for the weight of an actual HQ-7 SAM launcher on B deck (not yet fitted), and for moving the C-602 SSMs from the quarterdeck to amidships. Replacing the gas turbines with diesels reduces the stack size and gives the space. This allows the AA gun turret to move forward and clears a helipad at the stern
Result:
So not exactly a major advancement in naval design (But I could be wrong)
If youd like to be on or off, please FR mail me.

I'm guessing the Ayatollah is visiting. Commisionings are fun.
Wouldnt it be funny if it mysteriously sunk?
An MK 48 ADCAP torpedo could do the job quite nicely.

Now their aircraft carrier will finally have an escort. Oh, wait. They don’t have any of those.
