Ukraine Exit Polls Say Yanukovych Has Won Election

Exit polls from Ukraine's presidential election indicate opposition leader Viktor Yanukovych has narrowly won. Mr Yanukovych is given a lead of 3-5% over Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. President Viktor Yushchenko lost in the first round. If correct, it would be a remarkable comeback for Mr Yanukovych, who was swept aside five years ago by the Orange Revolution. He would be expected to make Ukraine's foreign policy more pro-Russian.

The BBC's Richard Galpin in Kiev says the result would be an extraordinary indictment of the Orange Revolution leaders' failure to deliver on their promises, which has left people deeply disillusioned. Mud-slinging Mr Yanukovych was a presidential candidate in the last election in 2004, which was found to have been rigged in his favour, sparking the Orange Revolution.

Yulia Tymoshenko earlier said she would take supporters to the streets He is now expected to change Ukraine's foreign policy - which has been pro-Western and anti-Moscow. Mr Yanukovych had secured 48.7% of the vote, against Mrs Tymoshenko's 45.5%, according to the National Exit Poll. Another exit poll, by ICTV, said he took 49.8%, against 45.2% for his rival.

I told you, it's a historical accident: they infected the forum (largely) during our (justified) scepticism about Clinton's Balkan adventure. Some of them (mistakenly) believe thst it gives them carte blanche.

Could you explain the Soros comments?

Are they saying if Soros supported FDR, Hitler is their guy?

Pretty much. That’s how the reasoning works. However, (it might be difficult to imagine), your typical Russian revanchist fears Soros more than a typical American conservative.

Oh, and I forget to add: they believe that they can parlay American conservatives' fear of Soros into support for Soviet, er, Russian revanchism.

It sounds silly, but that's the way they think. (But what do I know? I'm just clinging to an obsolete Cold War mindset).

Remember that ANYONE who is part of the “near abroad” can get Russian citizenship and a Russian passport, as long as they speak Russian.

Krushchev, Brezhnev, Chernenko, and half the Soviet Politburo were Ukrainians. They not only governed Ukraine but the whole USSR and half of Europe including Slovakia.

Is this your way of telling us that Ukraine is part of Russia, thus Russia is entitled to it?

What’s wrong with Ukraine turning back to its Russian roots?

Surely no one views it as a bad thing that Canada has a pro-US government, so why is it bad that Ukraine has a pro-Russian government? They are two related peoples with a common history.

Not sure what that is supposed to mean. I have never prayed for his success, but yes, in obedience to Scripture, I pray for him. For his salvation if possible, for that would bring about a new and different man; but if not, for the limitation to the damage he can cause. I’m not sure either is in the works, as this nation has done enough on her own to merit the judgment that is coming our way. Look at abortion alone. Still, Scripture says, as Ronald Reagan had turned to his Bible during his first swearing in ceremony..

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

I believe that God’s intervention is our only hope. Our own might won’t get it. We need the Lord. So, yes, I am the one who prays for Obama. But not as many have surmised. I prayed for Bush as well and started the prayer movement to him before he was even elected.

Is there some facts behind Russian passports for anyone? Russian passports in Ukraine is a myth. It hapend in Georgia only and Putinistas fond a good excuse for it. Not too many people remember earlier 90s in Georgia there was official slogan ‘Georgia for Georgians!’ on state media. Facing major economic decline Georgia used nationalist agenda too much as a tool to unite people aginst the Empire of Evil. Minorities were a target to claim them as Soviet agents who are stealing Georgian freedom which wasn’t as true as it is now. These poor people were left out of basic freedoms and targeted by government military same way it was at Bosnia. I don’t give any excuse to Russians giving them passports since their intrest is clear but it sure makes some excuse giving a passport to one who unable to have a national passport since his or her own government refusing to issue one. You need one just to travel somewhere. Also why one need Georgian passport if it is possible to get Russians, to be more welcomed abroad.
As for issuing Russian passports in Ukraine it’s a joke. It is same as giving US citizenship to any Mexican who ask. Ukrainians are already busy to get East for job legally or not crawling around the border in hundreds daily. If one to give them citizenship there won’t be Ukrainians left at home.

50% of Ukrainians are - Russians, 60 % of Ukrainians are Russian-speakers, also 90% of their industrial area is in “Russian” part of Ukraine including entire sea line.

Its Hruschev fault actually. He “donated” pure Russian areas to Ukraine, Krimea and seashore, Donbass etc and now 50% of Ukrainians are- Russians.
Ukraine is a communist-created nation with little or nothing to do with ancient Ukraine.
