African Union to consider "land for Haitians" plan

ADDIS ABABA - The African Union (AU) agreed on Sunday to consider a Senegalese proposal to resettle Haiti's earthquake homeless and possibly create a state for them in Africa. The idea was first floated by Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade who said the history of Haitians as descendants of African slaves gave them the right to a new life on the continent.

AU chairman Jean Ping told African leaders at its annual summit in Addis Ababa that they would discuss the proposal during the three-day event. The AU had opened an account for Haiti with the African Development Bank, he said.

"It is out of a sense of duty and memory and solidarity that we can further the proposal of Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade to create in Africa the conditions for the return of Haitians who wish to return after the effect of the disaster that ravaged Haiti," Ping said.

Wade said Senegal and other African states should naturalize any Haitians who sought new nationality, and he urged a mass adoption programme across the continent for orphans of the quake, feared to have killed as many as 200,000.

The idea for a new state is reminiscent of the 19th century creation of Liberia by freed U.S. slaves. The West African country is currently recovering from a 1999 civil war and is hoping to benefit from recent oil discoveries off its coast...

The Dominican Republic east end of the island has done much better than Haiti. I’d say let the west end of the island go to the Dominicans and let them decide how many stay and how many relocate back to Africa.

Having read a couple books on the history of Haiti, ceding control over to Dominican Republic would be a very bad idea. Google Dominican War of Independence 1844

Different people, cultures and ancestries.

Given a 95% muslim Senegalese population it sounds like a potential slaves for Africa program.

A lot of poor Haitians live in virtual slavery in Haiti and in the United States. If they go to Africa, I fear it will be even worse for them.

Dominicans are predominantly of African ancestry, albeit with more white blood swimming amongst their dominant black DNA. You are correct that the cultural differences, and history of friction with, and occupation by, the Haitians.

at first glance this seems very good...Haiti is way over populated for what it can support...9-10 million

too bad they can't export 60-70%

The tiny land area of Haiti simply can not support 9 million whether they are industrious or “come yet” welfare slackers.

Taiwan has twice the population density yet has a per capita income ten times greater than Haiti. I won't compare the even smaller, more densely populated, wealthy city-states of Hong Kong and Singapore. It not land, natural resources or climate -- it's people and culture that make wealth.

And we'll still have to end up rescuing them there. Better to do our best to get them headed in the right direction while they're nearby but we need the UN out of Haiti for them to have a fighting chance.

Keep in mind Senegal is Muslim. This ought to be good-Voodo meets Islam.

Do you suspect there are some cultural or generic differences between industrious Asians and Hatee Africans? Facts wure seem to point that way.... but hey we shouldn’t listen to facts.

Have never read or know much about DR and Haiti history other than Haiti is 100% slave decendents. Any good references?
