NORTH CAROLINA ELECTION CENTRAL

If we are going to make a difference in the upcoming election, we need to KNOW the candidates. Please post the names of ALL your Congressional candidates on this thread along with any and all information available.

We need names, positions, platforms, news articles, statements, pictures. We need to separate the RINOS from the Conservatives, and most of all, we need to get the liberals of either party OUT!

We can do this if you help. I have started this thread. All you have to do is contribute a little time and a little research. Help us help this country, and between us, we WILL take our country back!

Let's Do It!!!

Sorry folks, I didn't intend to go so long without a ping to this thread, so this will be a long one.

First, another reminder that the latest list of candidates is at the top of my About page. If I'm missing anything, let me know.

US SENATE: Civitas polled the Democratic side of the race and found that none of the candidates have made a splash. (Post 40)

US House Dist. 3: Former Onslow County Commissioner Joe McLaughlin may make another run at Walter Jones in the Republican primary, and has been criticizing Jones in letters to the Jacksonville Daily News. McLaughlin received 40% against Jones in 2008.

Another Republican, Sperby Piner of Onslow County, has entered the race, and Bob Cavanaugh of Carteret County says that he'll drop out if McLaughlin enters the race. (Post 60)

US House Dist. 4: 2008 Republican nominee BJ Lawson is said to be considering the race again.

US House Dist. 6: James Taylor (no, not that one) is challenging Howard Coble in the primary and got a write-up in the Burlington News-Times (post 34) but Taylor's first campaign event mentioned in that article has been postponed due to the weather.

US House Dist. 7: Ilario Pantano, a Sheriff's Deputy and Marine Corps officer from New Hanover County, has entered the Republican primary (post 44). Pantano was wrongly accused and later acquitted of premeditated murder in Iraq, and wrote the book 'Warlord' about his experiences (recent and older articles on the incident).

Will Breazeale claimed some big name endorsements, including Pat McCrory, Duncan Hunter and John Linder.

US House Dist. 8: Democratic incumbent Larry Kissell has gained a primary opponent, Nancy Shakir of Fayetteville, and has lost the support of the woman who chaired his 2006 and 2008 campaigns. (Post 49)

On the Republican side, Lou Huddleston received the endorsement of Panthers star Mike Minter. (Post 41)

US House Dist. 10: Patrick McHenry has less money on hand than either of his two primary challengers, Iredell County Commissioner Scott Keadle and Vance Patterson of Burke County. (Post 47)

US House Dist. 11: Dan Eichenbaum of Cherokee County has been winning early straw polls. (Post 48)

US House Dist. 12: Write-ups on the two Republicans running to face Mel Watt, Doc Gillenwater of Greensboro (post 37) and Paul Johnson of Tyro (post 38).

US House Dist. 13: Two write-ups on Bill Randall's official campaign opening, in front of Brad Miller's office in Raleigh. (Posts 32 and 33)

NC Senate Dist. 8: Republican Bill Rabon of Brunswick County, and Democratic state Rep. David Redwine are running to replace RC Soles. (Post 39)

NC Senate Dist. 40, NC House Dists. 99, 101 & 102: A civil war is brewing between Mecklenburg Democrats. Rep. Nick Mackey rigged a party election to replace outgoing Sheriff Jim Pendergraph in 2007. In 2008, the NC Democratic Party threw out the results of the election and made Mackey's opponent Sheriff. Mackey then got revenge on the Democratic establishment by defeating incumbent Rep. Drew Saunders in the 2008 primary.

Two months ago, Democrat Rodney Moore announced he would challenge Mackey in the primary, and last week a number of Mackey's friends entered races to challenge establishment Democrats Sen. Malcom Graham and Reps. Beverly Earle and Becky Carney (post 43)

Mackey claims it's all just a coincidence, but they ain't buying it. Stock up on popcorn because it's a war between the crooked and the even more crooked.

NC House Dist. 20: Republican Tristan Patterson of Tabor City is challenging incumbent Democrat Rep. Dewey Hill. (Post 42)

I haven’t heard a thing out of Randall’s primary opponent yet. It will take a lot to convince me that he’s a better candidate than Randall.

That said, Randall’s website needs to be improved. Actually what he needs to do is use his website for fundraising drives, which with his speaking prowess could be a real success...

Republican Who Gained in Obama Election Looking For a Win in 2010 (PR Newswire)

William (B.J.) Lawson: CANDIDATE FOR CONGRESS (NC-4)

CARY, N.C., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- B.J. Lawson, 2008 Republican nominee for Congress in North Carolina's Fourth Congressional District, has decided to enter the race for the same seat in 2010. The seat is currently held by long-time incumbent David Price (D-Chapel Hill). Lawson, whose 2008 campaign raised over a half million dollars and attracted a national following and devoted team of grassroots volunteers, will work to build on the large momentum gained in the previous race. Despite North Carolina's straight ticket voting, the Democratic majorities in his district and Obama's large national victory, Lawson was successful in outpolling Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

"President Obama brought big anti-Republican resentment in 2008, but our campaign pushed back." Lawson said, "We walked the streets, staffed the polls and not only campaigned; we educated, showing people early how promises of Hope and Change were false and that common-sense conservative principles will get our country back on track. Even with three major colleges, an Obama campaign office and David Price pulling his DC staff to campaign for him, we moved the needle for both the party and conservatism. I'm extremely proud of that. "

Lawson, 36, relocated to North Carolina after high school to attend Duke University. After earning his medical doctorate in 2000, BJ started Durham-based software company Mercury MD, started a family with his high-school sweetheart JoLynn, and made the Research Triangle his family's home. "North Carolina has been my home for my entire adult life. I am proud to be a North Carolinian and JoLynn and I want to ensure North Carolina remains as wonderful a place to live for our children as it has been for us," Lawson stated.

Lawson is running on the same theme as his 2008 race: Peace, Prosperity, and Liberty. He believes that those conservative principles are being embraced nationwide, including in North Carolina's Fourth District. He said, "President Obama and the Democratic leadership has shown the country that their promised hope and change means nothing more than higher taxes, more bailouts, more regulation and less freedom. David Price may have gotten away with climbing on the coattails of this message two years ago, but I think the people now see that there are no coattails left."

Lawson concluded, "I have had the pleasure to serve my community as a physician and businessman, and I serve my family as a husband and father of three. I am excited about sharing my vision for North Carolina and the United States, and even more excited about serving my community as a member of Congress. Together, I believe the conservatives of this district – of all political parties – can send a message to Washington, DC that we have had enough of the bailouts, takeovers, and backroom deals of Nancy Pelosi and David Price."

His campaign can be followed at http://www.lawsonforcongress.com. For press inquiries or to schedule an interview, please call Gail Marold at (919) 302-1620 or email gail.marold@lawsonforcongress.com

Blogging "Christ's War" (WUNC Isaac Hunter's Tavern)

“I don’t know anything about that,” Tim D’Annunzio’s press flack Lauren Slepian told me this afternoon. Finding out from someone else that your candidate has a personal blog does not generally make for a good day. Finding out from a reporter is even worse.

Machine Gun Social

Charlotte’s Jim Morrill posted yesterday about a D’Annunzio fundraiser in Fayetteville Thursday. The GOP hopeful for the 8th Congressional seat is holding a “Machine Gun Social” at a local gun shop. For $25, donors can shoot a semi-automatic till they run out of bullets.

The commenters at Morrill’s blog had some harsh words on the topic. D’Annunzio was quick to shoot back (sorry), denouncing his “liberal” detractors as “racist redneck hicks” intent on “lynching” him.
“Hiding behind these web sites as "anonymous" is the same as hiding under a the white hood, COWARDS.”
D’Annunzio, unlike most of his online critics, signed his name to his post. The Blogspot username on his comment was “Paraclete.” If you click on the link, it guides you to the user’s blog, called “Christ’s War.”

"My journal"

D’Annunzio confirmed to me it IS his personal blog. He said he’s been writing it for about a year, and he hadn’t taken any special pains to hide his authorship: “It’s kind of my journal. No one follows it, but it’s out there for anyone to read.” As for “Paraclete,” it’s the name of his company, and he says he uses it pretty commonly online as a username.

Of course, "paraclete" is a religious term, too. And that’s what his blog’s about. It’s a potent stream-of-consciousness blend of biblical verse, exegesis, and conservative politics. End-times theology plays a big role, especially in connection with Obama.
[Obama] will deal with all these from a position of weakness. This isn’t his country, and he couldn’t care less about the consequences. He will cut and run.

We are entering a very dangerous time. Remember they are opportunists. Things are closing in on them with their socialism. They will welcome the outside focus at first until they come to the realization that they are getting people killed.

The best thing for US and the world may be the meteor option. We will see.

What time is coming? The end of the dispensation of grace, it is at the door.
"The Call - Revelation 14"

There’s plenty more where that came from: numerology, eschatology, even an account of his own personal conversion experience The Call - Revelation 14 , which he likens to “the pill scene in the original Matrix.”
I am not going to go into any of the details of specific events but will say that they all involved outside uncontrollable physical occurrences that corresponded and coordinated with my thoughts and internal conversations.

OK, one example of what I mean. Driving in my truck and thinking that if what I was being shown were true shouldn’t I have holes in my hands, feet and side? The answer came back that with everything else I have been seeing wouldn’t that be an easy thing if it were a necessary thing. My next thought was that no one is going to believe unless they can see and touch the holes. At that moment I had arrived at my destination and stepped out of my truck. Unknown to me there was a board on the ground next to where I stopped. My first step out was onto the board and the 16 penny nail that was in it. It went deep into my foot and at the same time the thought came telling me, I told you it would be easy if it is necessary.
That’s from D’Annunzio’s first entry on the blog. He goes on:
For the past 15 years I have been telling your religious and political leaders what time it is.

They have refused to tell you. I have warned them away from all the devastation that has come. It is going to get much worse and you should be prepared.

To be very blunt about what I am telling you, I am 100% man and the Spirit in me is 100% God, and this is the end of the age. Today I have expanded to telling the world what God to date only told your leadership.
There’s more to the post, of course. Read the whole thing here.

Campaign killer?

I try to avoid snark about anyone’s religious beliefs. That’s a personal matter. But you know, it’s not everyday you hear a candidate for Congress telling you he’s a direct conduit for God’s messages about the End Times, either.

I’m curious about whether this will have any effect on his chances in the 8th’s GOP primary. More secular Republicans may find his heady brew of theology and politics a little troubling. But D’Annunzio is positioning himself as the most conservative contender in the field – and for far right-wing Republicans, this sort of thing may be more of a plus than a minus. Additionally, if you read through the blog, it’s clear D’Annunzio could pass any conservative purity test anywhere with flying colors. So it’s hard to say whether this’ll do him any damage.

Comments? Drop me a line.

(And thank you to @Jerimee for asking about the blog in the first place!)

D’Annunzio Blows a Gasket (Meck Deck)

Tim D’Annunzio, the 8th District congressional candidate who is holding a “Machine Gun Social” in Fayetteville, takes umbrage at the criticism hurled at him by anonymous commenters on Jim Morrill’s blog. He tells Morrill:
“The old racist red-neck hick was somebody who used the ‘n’ word and focused all their attention on blacks,” he said when asked about his post. “Now, it’s that same type of person. The new buzz words are ‘Christian’ and ‘Conservative’ and ‘Constitutionalist.’ They’re the targets of those same basic haters …. They’re now doing their lynching via the Internet.”

He says most posters make baseless and personal attacks. While the Klan “hid behind the anonymity of their white hoods,” he says, people “nowadays do it by hiding behind the name of ‘Anonymous’ on these blogs. To be perfectly honest, it’s evil what they’re doing.”

And the people doing it? As he sees it, the authors of most posts are liberal. “To be perfectly honest,” he added, “some of them may be Republican.”

“Typically people who are against those things are liberals …. How do you know a liberal? They hate everything this country stands for. They hate everything based on thoughtful analysis. All their thought is emotion-based. They want to stir up hate because hate doesn’t require thought.”
Truth be told, nothing in the comments on D’Annunzio and his event struck me as particularly out of bounds.

Sure, they called him a “psychopath” and “nutcase” and “creep” — and so? You deliberately try to push buttons by having a gun-fest — sounds like a ton of fun, BTW — and then flip out and play the victim when the totally predictable array of criticism comes your way. That is nothing more than treating your fellow citizens like idiots. Sack up and take the heat, Tim.

You were not lynched — an odious comparison to the victims of nothing less than a bloody period of domestic terrorism across the South — no evil was done to you. Stupidity, perhaps. Welcome to life. To political life in particular. People can disagree with you without hating their country and its principles — although they may well not have a clue as to what limited government and a republic of free men and women should look like.

Better you educate them on that than freak out over blog comments.

Richardson to run for state Senate (Washington Daily News)

Beaufort County Commissioner Hood Richardson, a Republican, has confirmed that he plans to run for the state Senate seat currently held by Sen. Marc Basnight, D-Dare.

“This guy is beatable,” Richardson told the Washington Daily News. “He’s never had anybody run against him for real.”

Richardson, a longtime county commissioner, said he is scheduled to make a formal announcement Wednesday in Raleigh.

The WDN was awaiting a response from Basnight’s office.

The 13-term senator represents all or part of eight counties in northeastern North Carolina, including Hyde and Beaufort counties.

Woodard challenges Owens (Daily Advance)

For the first time since he won election in November 1994, state Rep. Bill Owens will have a Republican challenger when he seeks re-election in the fall.

John Woodard, a 65-year-old Elizabeth City resident, filed Monday as a candidate for Owens’ 1st House District seat.

”I decided that it was time to step forward,” said Woodard, who works as a catastrophe insurance claims adjuster.

Woodard, who is making his first bid for public office, said he decided to challenge Owens, a Democrat, because he’s concerned about “one-party control” of state government.

“That has ramifications at all levels of government that go unchecked because there is not effective political opposition in the state,” he said.

Woodard said that because of Owens’ close ties to House Speaker Joe Hackney, D-Orange, Owens “is a Democrat first” and generally votes with the Democratic majority in the House.

“He is part of the majority,” Woodard said. “They set the tone, everybody else falls in line.”

[snip]

Owens’ House District includes Pasquotank, Camden, Currituck and Tyrrell counties.

Woodard said he hasn’t reviewed the state budget yet to come to any conclusions about specific budgetary priorities.

“But I think that the voters have to understand that there is a clear distinction between my opponent and myself,” Woodard said.

As a former regional vice president for Gay and Taylor Inc., Woodard said he’s had to produce multi-million-dollar budgets, live within them and make a profit.

“That was the only way that I could keep my job,” Woodard said.

He said he is concerned about government spending.

“The last thing we need is for our generation and the one to follow to be taxed to death and have a deficit that they can’t get out of,” Woodard said. “The government is spending our grandchildren’s money. They’ve already gone through our children’s money. And taxes are not the answer.”

Once the state has a balanced economy with a fair tax system, state leaders can develop growth plans for the state, he said.

“Taxes are the antithesis of growth,” he said.

Republican vies to take back swing district (Rocky Mount Telegram)

A Republican candidate stepped forward Thursday to challenge N.C. Rep. Randy Stewart, who holds one of a handful of Democratic-controlled N.C. House seats targeted by North Carolina Republicans.

Jeff Collins, a 54-year-old Rocky Mount financial consultant, filed to run in the Republican primary for the District 25 seat held by Stewart, D-Nash.

Collins said his primary goal in seeking the office is to make North Carolina more attractive to prospective employers.

“I’m concerned that our state tax policy is making it increasingly difficult for any community in North Carolina to attract businesses,” Collins said after filing. “I’m also appalled that in a recession, when citizens are asked to tighten their belts, the General Assembly has responded with increased spending and higher taxes.”

In August, N.C. GOP Chairman Tom Fetzer and N.C. House Minority Leader Paul Stam held a rally in Rocky Mount, calling on local party stalwarts to offer time, money and perhaps their candidacy to beat the Democrats and Stewart in the 2010 election.

The District 25 seat held by Stewart traditionally has been a conservative-leaning swing district and is prime for the taking, Fetzer said. Republicans controlled the Nash County seat for 16 consecutive years before Stewart’s election in 2008.

GOP official takes on Spear (Daily Advance)

EDENTON — Local columnist Bob Steinburg is apparently ready to trade in the opinion pages of local newspapers for the halls of the state Legislature.

Steinburg, a columnist whose weekly take on politics, “A Conservative’s Viewpoint,” has appeared in both The Daily Advance and the Chowan Herald as well as other publications, announced Monday that he intends to challenge state Rep. Tim Spear, D-Washington, in the 2nd House District.

“After much prayer and consternation and after months of unsuccessful attempts at recruiting a candidate to oppose Tim Spear, including right up through 4 p.m. (Monday), I have decided at this time I must announce my intentions to file to run for the people’s seat in North Carolina House District 2 before the filing deadline of noon on Friday, Feb. 26,” Steinburg, a registered Republican, said in an e-mail to The Daily Advance.

Steinburg, chairman of the Chowan County Republican Party, said becoming an elected official was “never my true desire” when he started writing his column more than two years ago. His goal then, he said, was to write about local, state and national politics in such a way as to show local readers “how these events all tie together to shape our lives.”

General: The filing period has begun and the candidates can be viewed here (PDF or Excel).

Questionnaires: Here's an idea, and it actually gets at the heart of what this thread is supposed to be about - vetting the candidates. How about we put our heads together and come up with a list of questions for me to send to all of the congressional candidates? Start throwing suggestions my way...

US House Dist. 2, 7 & 8: The Cumberland County GOP held straw polls for the three congressional districts that run through the county. The winners were Renee Ellmers in the 2nd district, Will Breazeale in the 3rd district and Lou Huddleston in the 7th district. Sarah Palin won the straw poll for the 2012 presidential nominee. (Post 68)

US House Dist. 4: It looks like the primary has become a real race now that 2008 candidate BJ Lawson is in. (Post 65)

Lawson is a Paulite libertarian while Frank Roche is a traditional conservative. Roche and Lawson appeared together on WPTF with Bill LuMaye (listen here and here).

Americans for Prosperity praised Roche for signing their pledge against the carbon tax, some sort of which Lawson apparently thinks is a good idea.

US House Dist. 7: Breazeale touts some more endorsements, including former Vice Chairman of the John Locke Foundation, Chad Adams.

US House Dist. 8: Tim D'Annunzio... let's just say he isn't quite ready for prime time. Don't be surprised if he shows up here and starts flaming us. (Posts 66 and 67)

US House Dist. 11: Six candidates have filled out questionnaires issued by the AshevilleTeaPAC. The PAC will host a debate on March 5th, and then issue an endorsement.

Considering that most, if not all, of the Paulite-dominated Asheville Tea Party (and much of the Buncombe GOP) is involved in Dan Eichenbaum's campaign, it isn't hard to guess who they'll end up endorsing. But the questionnaires are nonetheless informative, especially the one from Hendersonville mayor Greg Newman, who couldn't even bother to actually answer the questions and instead pasted what was written on his website...

State Senate & House: A slew of Republican challengers have announced for competitive districts in the northeast in the past week.

State Senate Dist. 1: Head toad Marc Basnight is being challenged by long-time Beaufort county commissioner Hood Richardson. (Post 69)

State House Dist. 1: In what is apparently his first challenge since he won the seat in 1994, Democrat Bill Owens will face John Woodard of Elizabeth City. (Post 70)

State House Dist. 2: Chowan County GOP chairman and locally-syndicated columnist Bob Steinburg is challenging Democrat Tim Spear. (Post 72)

State House Dist. 25: This Nash County seat was only just lost to Dem Randy Stewart in 2008. Jeff Collins of Rocky Mount will make the challenge. (Post 71)

Just so you folks know, Frank Roche said in this interview that B.J Lawson conducts himself more as a Progressive than a Libertarian or Conservative. It was a jaw dropping, accurate analysis and WTPF removed it from this clip. That’s a real shame guys.

great idea!! how about asking BJ why his stance changed regarding carbon tax. In 2008, BJ supported carbon tax by saying “We should also explore a carbon tax on nonrenewable energy as a complete replacement for our federal income tax. “ to a reversal in his 2010 campaign site stating “As your Congressman, B.J. Lawson will renew the Bush tax cuts, oppose global taxation schemes like Cap and Trade or “carbon taxes” “
I’ll be back with more questions for other candidates...again, great idea!!
