He may be a crank, but he’s consistent in his crankery. Anywhere there’s human misery — after 9/11, after Katrina, even after Ariel Sharon’s stroke — Reverend Pat will be there to explain to the victims why they deserved it. (And he’s not the only one.) He’s taking a beating on Twitter right now for having said this, including/especially from Christians who don’t want to see the faith smeared by his latest Old Testament thunderbolt theory. No worries there: Other Christian leaders, starting with the Pope and Franklin Graham, are taking a more New Testament view. But even conceding that he doesn’t speak for most Christians, he does still command a sizable following, no? Even after years of barfing up stuff like this.

I never said ONE WORD about ME being selfless and sacrificial. I essentially said that I learned lessons about that, in my case by seeing quite a few examples of people being selfless and pouring themselves out for others. In fact, I clearly stated that I would never be the man that my father was. I took no credit for that sort of thing. You mistakenly assigned it to me.
The distinction is clear. I compare the sacrifice of the people I have mentioned, the sacrifices that Christ made, and ask myself, how does Pat Robertson compare to these examples. Pat has done some good work, but he is not in the same class of people that I am thinking about. My point is that his flash, wealth and periodic attempts at prophecy hurt his own ministry and becomes a lightening rod for criticism from those eager to discredit Christianity. He is not going to cause me trouble in the faith for saying these things, but these type of pronouncements can be an obstacle to spreading the Gospel. Because he is a high profile public figure, he can quickly do as much damage as he does good. That is really all I am saying.

He is immoral and cannot support other humans in a time of terrible tragedy without offering his stupid allegory.
Fine, he feels a certain way but it would best kept to himself, in this time.
He should be focused on prayer for the mass of humanity, who are suffering terribly, not on some invented legacy these people had nothing to with.
He should organize help and practice the greatest commandment of charity, which God looks most favorably upon.
And so-called Christians continue to spread bigotry and fear of their fellow man.
Isn’t it odd how it is members of an opposing belief that are so knowledgeable? Most haven’t a clue what VooDou ever was or was formed, they just accept what they see in movies.
I’m still waiting to see a photograph of that “iron pig” statue that is so prominently claimed by all these “in the know” people.
Surely a photograph exists of such a prominent symbol that is readily seen, right?

God is sovereign. He shows up in power. Sometimes that power is an earthquake. In case you don't believe me, read Acts 16, Matthew 27, and the Hallel. Evil is not an abstract random concept. Go and learn why Jesus was impressed with the faith of the centurion.

On this score, certainly Hati’s leaders have reportedly made a number of pacts with satan over the decades.

I don’t think man necessarily knows God’s purpose, but I give preachers slack to improve man’s relationship with God. I also cut slack to those whose words are accompanied by deeds, like Pat Robertson.
The Bible is replete with scorned preachers.
Has God blessed the United States — in part because this country was dedicated to Him, because our Founding Fathers were in large part Christians, and because the worldview has in large part been based on Scripture?
If so, has God withheld His blessing on countries that don’t share such a spiritual heritage?
If we believe God has blessed us, why wouldn’t we believe that God has *not* blessed other countries, especially countries that go out of their way to deny Him?
Hallelujah - God is good, and His love endures forever - even through catastrophes that He sends/ allows in His sovereign justice. Not even Job had a right to approach the Throne and demand an accounting of that divine preogative.
Ninevah is the appropriate boundary on the other side. A wicked and adulterous generation looks for the signs and miracles that they believe establish His kingdom, but the only sign God will give them is the sign of Jonah, for in reality, they don’t want to see God’s grace, but His judgment.
The good news is this : God’s wrath is not poured out on those who accept His Son’s name and yield fully to His Spirit. His kingdom is at hand, on earth as it is in heaven. But we who labor in His vineyard must rejoice for those who show up even at the last hour. As for me and my house, we hope the workday lasts as long as the unrepentant walk the earth. My flesh hurries, but my spirit says that His grace will suffice for as long as He deems necessary. He has already said that every knee shall bow and every tongue confess - I get no satisfaction in thinking this only occurs after it is too late for too many.
There’s a lot of misinformation about Pat Robertson. This is typical. It’s cool to hate on high-profile Christians.
If you watch the ACTUAL video of what Pat Robertson said, it’s not as bad as all the commentaries make it out to be. Here’s CBN’s take on this situation (from http://www.cbn.com/about/pressrelease_patrobertson_haiti.aspx ):
“On today’s The 700 Club, during a segment about the devastation, suffering and humanitarian effort that is needed in Haiti, Dr. Robertson also spoke about Haiti’s history. His comments were based on the widely-discussed 1791 slave rebellion led by Boukman Dutty at Bois Caiman, where the slaves allegedly made a famous pact with the devil in exchange for victory over the French. This history, combined with the horrible state of the country, has led countless scholars and religious figures over the centuries to believe the country is cursed. Dr. Robertson never stated that the earthquake was God’s wrath. If you watch the entire video segment, Dr. Robertson’s compassion for the people of Haiti is clear. He called for prayer for them. His humanitarian arm has been working to help thousands of people in Haiti over the last year, and they are currently launching a major relief and recovery effort to help the victims of this disaster. They have sent a shipment of millions of dollars worth of medications that is now in Haiti, and their disaster team leaders are expected to arrive tomorrow and begin operations to ease the suffering.”
Please read that carefully before piling onto a Christian leader who’s done a LOT of good (and some bad, like all of us) during his lifetime.

Things like pacts with the Devil have consequences. But I will think about it more. I intend to send money anyway. Helping out today’s Haitians has nothing to do with it. I merely said Robertson’s words can’t be discounted if the story is true. Perhaps the outpouring of help from around the world will do something to convince individual Haitians that the answer is with the Lord, not with the Devil and voodoo, as well as contributing to solving the practical problems there.
Sorry, but the pig statue is very relevant since it is part of the claim supplied as “proof.”
