Pat Robertson: Haiti made a pact with the devil or something

He may be a crank, but he’s consistent in his crankery. Anywhere there’s human misery — after 9/11, after Katrina, even after Ariel Sharon’s stroke — Reverend Pat will be there to explain to the victims why they deserved it. (And he’s not the only one.) He’s taking a beating on Twitter right now for having said this, including/especially from Christians who don’t want to see the faith smeared by his latest Old Testament thunderbolt theory. No worries there: Other Christian leaders, starting with the Pope and Franklin Graham, are taking a more New Testament view. But even conceding that he doesn’t speak for most Christians, he does still command a sizable following, no? Even after years of barfing up stuff like this.

If you’re wondering what the “pact with the devil” is all about (fact check: roughly 95 percent of Haitians are Christian), Tapper has some quickie background. Tongue-in-cheek exit question from MKH: According to the Harry Reid standard, shouldn’t Robertson’s charitable works absolve him from any and all offensive utterances?

Robertson says Haitians don't like talking about this pact much. Might be because there was no such pact and no evidence of any other anecdotal accounts by fleeing French or Polish Troops who left with their tails between their legs in 1804.

Maybe he can point out the iron pig statue dedicated to the pact that no one else can find.

Oh, last I heard, Haiti is some 95% Catholic, Pat.

You do your homework well and present things accurately and justly which is what God demands of us. It is pleasure meeting individuals like yourself on FR. As Christians we need to exercise greater care in apologetics and contending for the faith or we ourselves can fall into error and commit the sin of slander becoming castaways ourselves as Paul said. Have a blessed day tomorrow and keep posting like you do. I look forward to hearing more from you.

There is no country that has 95% Christians...not spirit filled, bought by the blood Christians. Not even the US has that many professing Christians. Agree with him nor not I'm sure Robertson has voodoo in mind when he's talking about a pact with the Devil.

Excuse me if I don’t share in your desire for him to have a punishing death. I reserve that sentiment for people who deserve it. Like rapists, murders and terrorists.

“A voodoo Priest stuck a pin in the wrong place. Actually they have big real VooDoo down there.”

- Over 50% of the nation down there practices VooDoo.

Not to say we’re any better since 50% of ours votes for Commies.

I’d like to see PR on a plane to Haiti to provide help without uttering a single word.

Actually 90% of the people practice voodou and it’s been declared the nations Religion. You can thank Aristard for that...a very evil man who consulted dead peoples heads to make decisions for the gov. For those not familiar with voo-dou, and you really don’t want to be, it’s as dark and evil as it gets.

Some people who go to Haiti cannot stay for long...the darkness on this Island is thick enough to feel. I believe this for it is the same way in the backhills of the Carolinas where we had missionaries. People would not go out after dark it was thick enough to cut.

So my point is the people there are definately influenced by what they practice, and this has stunted their personal growth as well..some fellow wrote he was amazed grown men behaved like twelve year olds, and not uncommon to see that there..

Serve them? Why should Robertson or anybody else serve the Haitians? As a man of the cloth. Robertson ostensibly serves God. Given the scope and accomplishments of Robertson’s mission, I’d say he’s been serving God better than most mortals. So what if he goes off the rails verbally once in a while? People are such overly-sensitive crybabies nowadays. I guess it’s a direct result of political correctness indoctrination. But I have to say I’m getting real tired of everyone, conservatives included as exemplified on this thread, wetting their beds over a handful of words spoken by a basically good man who has a couple eccentricities. Seriously, people need to stop getting all wee-wee’d up over some minor statement and start appreciating eccentricities as the foil to political correctness that they are. ;)

He says Haiti made a pact with the Devil that they would be on the Devil’s side if he could get the French out of the country. First time I’m hearing this. Where did he get this from?

OTOH, it doesn’t hurt to get a “Thank you” once in awhile. In some cases, it helps the ‘giver’ to go on with their efforts. We’re all just human, and sometimes receiving a little acknowledgement and modest expression of appreciation is good for both parties. There are a lot of ‘takers’ and ‘receivers’ who may have their character improved by imparting a humble “Thank you for what you did” from time to time as well.

There were a lot of Katrina “victims” who not only didn’t lift a finger to help themselves, but didn’t even say “Thank you” to so many who dropped what was going on in their lives and gave their all to help.

On the whole, if the world was filled with Pat Robertsons, quirks and all, instead of so many men of fewer or no accomplishments except bringing violence, pain, corruption and misery to others, or who live their lives in silent resignation neither helping nor hurting, the world would be a better place. As for what God thinks and would have Robertson do, say or think, that’s between them.

There are bad people out there to quarrel over. Robertson isn’t one of them.

Jesus was no hippie.

Objectively contemplating the historical figure you Christians call Jesus, more properly "Yeshua," I think he was more like an outlaw biker, not the feminized wimpy Jesus modern popular culture deliberately depicts him to be.
