Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon, convicted last month on one count of embezzlement, is stepping down.
WBAL AM-1090 reported Wednesday afternoon Dixon would leave office Feb. 4.
The decision by Dixon, a Democrat, was revealed Wednesday as her lawyers were set to argue in court that the mayor deserved a new trial because of juror misconduct. She was scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 21.
Under the state constitution, Dixon would have been required to step down as mayor upon her sentencing, with City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake assuming Dixons mayoral duties. Speculation had run rampant in recent weeks that city leaders were pressing Dixon to resign.
Dixons conviction stemmed from her use of gift cards given to the city by developer Patrick Turner. Turner claimed they were intended for the needy.
The trial offered a window into what critics have long derided as a pay-to-play mentality at City Hall that tarnished Baltimores reputation.
Dixon was the former president of the Baltimore City Council who became mayor in January 2007. She ascended to the top job after then Mayor Martin OMalley became governor, defeating Republican Robert Ehrlich.
The Maryland Democrat Party is and always has been thoroughly corrupt, and they count cemetary’s as a vital voting block in Baltimore City, so they must really know something is coming in order to sweep Dixon aside.
Maybe it touches O’Malley somehow. It wouldn’t surprise me.
The Rats run MD, usually takes the FBI to convict them like Tom Bromwell, local Dem politico. Got his wife thrown in the slammer too, but it was the FBI.
The city is a cesspool, always corrupt, but now it’s not even safe to venture into that hole.
Three decades ago it was just a small town, northern most southern city. Now it’s even smaller population wise but far more dangerous, drive around.
I wonder if her attorney will accept payment in gift cards.
After watching all of The Wire, I'm pretty sure I'll never set foot in Baltimore.
This is the political environment Pelosi grew up in and emulates as her dad was a powerful man in the Baltimore political machine.
What a show, and how he got things done in Bagtown.
Would someone kindly post the “That’s Racist!” kid?
Thanks,
When you have cops assigned to spend the entire night in a convenience store and they are afraid to respond to needs in the parking lot, you know it’s bad.
Another black liberal mayor criminal goes down. What a shocker.
“Dixons conviction stemmed from her use of gift cards given to the city by developer Patrick Turner. Turner claimed they were intended for the needy.”
Nice. Taking money away from needy people. I hope she rots in jail.
Sheesh and I thought Detroit was the only big city that HAD a criminal democRAT mayor (former...King Kwame Kilpatrick). /sarcasm
Man, when he was mayor of Baltimore the city was actually quite nice to visit. But not anymore. Not even close.
She probably agreed to a PBJ to keep her pension.
She steps aside and the next corrupt POS slides right into the same position.
Maryland is one of the worst states.. right behind New Jersey & Michigan
Pelosi’s dad was big in Maryland politics. Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Worse, I heard cops both black and white arrest black people for “driving while Black” just to make their numbers.
Gets them off the street and they meet their quota.
This is not the city my next door neighbor used to be a K-9 cop down around Fells Point.
He did warn me, after the debacle of the ‘78 winter snow storm when they couldn’t shovel snow and had riots the city bought SUVs. Next big snow all the desk jockey high ranking officer types took them home so they could get to work. 4WDs weren’t available when they are parked and signed out to non-patrol officer.
This stuff didn’t start yesterday, common corruption whenever Rats are in control.
But wait, didn’t Pelosi’s dad used to run it and then he was followed by her brother? Are you saying she was raised in corruption? And she’s such an inspiring national leader too. It’s hard to believe. s/
