December 20, 2009

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine) released the following statement today on the status of the health reform legislation currently pending before the United States Senate: “Having been fully immersed in this issue for this entire year and as the only Republican to vote for health reform in the Finance Committee, I deeply regret that I cannot support the pending Senate legislation as it currently stands, given my continued concerns with the measure and an artificial and arbitrary deadline of completing the bill before Christmas that is shortchanging the process on this monumental and trans-generational effort.

She’s just pissed that they had no real use for her this time around.

You can guarantee if Nelson held strong, they would be bribing her somehow someway and she’d have caved.

Well maybe the GOP should run a couple of real conservatives instead of these two frauds.

A good RINO votes with the party when that vote is needed. Chaffee was NOT a good RINO. His vote was key to sinking Bush’s ANWR bill, and a couple of others.

The same with Snowe. If she votes “no,” it will not be in obedience to the Republican leadership. It will be because Harry Reid has given her permission to vote no.

She voted with the Dems on a key, crucial vote where her vote was needed and made the difference. That makes her a traitor. They should have pulled her committee assignments.

I guess they’re still working on the details of the bribe. Give it a day or two.

No, this is part of the original bribe, they tell these people they can "take a stand" down the road when their vote's not relevant.

Notice she waited until they were sure they had their 60 votes to take this little stand.

it is still important because without her vote, they can’t say the bill is even a little bi-partisan

Lincoln Chafee was not anything like his father, so I’m sorry you mentioned him, but at least Snowe and Collins sometimes “get it.”

I do realize the conservatives can’t win in New England, but are Snowe and Collins the best we can expect from Maine? Are the days of a Cohen gone? IIRC, he wasn’t quite as liberal as the two women.

Your state elects Republican governors. Maybe one of your retired governors will run for senate? I saw one on Sean Hannity’s panel.

I agree with you 100% and cannot understand the mentality that won’t give these two women credit when credit is due. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins are ALWAYS there for our military. Snowe fought long and hard to get two facilities off the BRAC list that should never have been put on — Sub repair at Groton and the Portsmouth facility.

You are correct that it is the best we can get and they have a better voting record on issues then the vast majority of Dems — way better. Obviously the people yelling the loudest against these two are not Republican or they would understand that most of New England is far from conservative but they keep sending the two Republicans back who vote for their constituents which is all you can ask.

This idea to throw people out that don’t meet the standards of some conservatives is ludicrous at best and just plain stupid IMHO. They all vote for Majority Leader and Speaker so if we can pick up more in New England then I say Welcome Aboard. Heck we have a Senator from TX that leans pro-choice and no one goes after her the way they do the two women from Maine and personally like the demeanor of the two Maine women much better.

People forget that Snowe was there when there used to be Dems that you could work with like Sam Nunn, David Boren, and Scoop Jackson for starters. It has always been the nature of the Senate to try and be as bi-partisan as possible. When Snowe gave up on the Dems, that spoke volumes.

Thank you for your post and your common sense — something that has been missing around here lately.

Very good news.Let this be a lesson to all you who said a year or two ago "Chaffee's a scumbag...let's get rid of him".RINOs like Chafee,Snowe and Collins vote correctly at least occasionally if not regularly. As a lifelong New Englander I promise you that at least here the likes of those three are the ***BEST*** you'll ever see being sent to DC.

Their votes mean nothing right now. I love how the RINOs get just enough cover to keep their R designation. Had Snowe voted this down in committee we wouldn't be here right now so your argument is void of substance.

PhiKapMom -

Good points. I think that having at least one republican on board was just almost as important as having the 60th vote. I think this vote will prove the lie about “moderate dems” They do not exist. I do think the Republicans still have moderates - which I’’m sure is annoying to many on here - but sure beats having a democrat from Maine in the Senate.

But in their hearts, they’ll be tinkled pink that the Dems have 60 votes.
