WASHINGTON (AP) - The number of newly laid off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week as the recovery of the nation's battered labor market proceeds in fits and starts.

The Labor Department said Thursday that the number of new jobless claims rose to 480,000 last week, up 7,000 from the previous week. That was a worse performance than the decline to 465,000 that economists had expected.

"The auto industry is his model. First you destroy it by regulating the hell out of it, forcing it to make a product that nobody wants, then you seize it from the ruined investors at gunpoint and then you turn it over to your cronies."

Wow, that's it in a nutshell, isn't it? Bears repeating.

“Of course, that assumes that by that time the economy is not such a mess that there will be no jobs at all. “

Yeah!

Considering that these numbers reflect a period that we should be seeing seasonal hiring, this is very bad indeed.

I have been trying to hire sales reps for the past six months and have been snubbed because the job pays straight commission (plus residuals, which make it a very good long term position). In the past two weeks I have had six inquiries, two from people who previously turned down the job.

I think people are beginning to see just how serious the situation really is.

January and February will be bloody as businesses go into defensive mode to preserve margins in 2010. Layoffs will be huge as ALL nonproductive workers are cut. Only the best producers will be kept AND if that stupid health bill passes, businesses will lay off to cover the increased medical insurance costs. Jobs will become MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD! (Whatever that means...)

What is it with this word: unexpectedly?

Not to ruin the joke, but the idea is that the markets have already priced in the "expected" value and markets move on surprises, i.e. news that is "unexpected".

Absolutely. Speaking of non-productive workers, the national labs out here (Federal Gov’t Jobs) are hiring. I have it on good authority that ALL federal agencies have been told to go on a hiring binge to help keep the unemployment numbers down. Since most Fed jobs are for life, this will make the deficit even worse in the long run.

I pray for a major leadership change in ‘10 and ‘12.

Unexpected means that they were wrong (or lying) about their predictions. So far, they have been wrong about 47 weeks in a row.

I have been one of those people from day one who believe that the whole crisis in the latter half of 2008 was deliberately brought to a head for political purposes.

I agree. The sudden leap in oil prices without a concurrent devaluation of the dollar is a big hint that manipulation took place.

There are some big-money players that want to make their club a bit more exclusive, but the somewhat free US economy has hampered their efforts by making wealth available to many rather than the few.
