Sen. Tom Coburn has just demanded that the Senate clerk read the single-payer amendment offered by Sen. Bernie Sanders -- and it's 767 pages.
Typically, Senators offering amendments will ask for unanimous consent to avoid reading the entire meausure, but all it takes is one Senator to object to demand its reading, and Coburn objected to Sanders attempt to dispense with the reading of the amendment.
To give you a sense of how this could delay things, it took the Senate clerk 18 minutes to get through the first 6 pages of the amendment, which were the table of contents. At this current pace, it will take 38 hours to get through the entire amendment.
You can follow along with the amendment here.
UPDATE: The body of the bill seems to be going faster than the table of contents, but it still looks likely to take at least 12 hours at this pace

They just put up on the screen that Coburn is making them read the entire thing and then he left the floor....I’m truly ROFLMAO.......

Delay this monster to after Christmas, then to after the SOTU address, then to after various recesses...you see...
11/2010 draws nigh...
Look at breaking news...even the RAT polls are showing the HUGE cracks in this monster..

125. I found this which probably explains it best When Lyndon Johnson was fighting for Medicare, he was right there all the time arm wrestling the Senate, one senator at a time. He didn't just say: "Senate, please write a bill." He made sure everyone knew what he wanted and what the personal consequences would be for every senator for both a vote for the bill and one against the bill. Obama has done none of that. He is both inexperienced and lacking Johnson's clear willingness to break legs to get what he wants.
....lacking Lyndon Johnson's clear willingness to break legs to get what he wants???
The hatred & intolerance of the so-called liberals, leftists & socialists never ceases to amaze me. No one is more intolerant & hateful than lefties & liberals & socialists!!!
2.
THANK GOD FOR TOM COBURN!
One of the few principled members of Congress left today.
He doesn’t read very well.
The sponsors of the bill should have to read it!!!
Rush said that Cantor has joined him and will demand the reading of the entire 2000 plus page bill when it is presented. No one has actually seen Harry’s bill as of yet.
Let Andrea go read the damn bill. (fully clothed, of course).

Currently reading pg 105 of 767 after 2 hours. At this rate they will be done in 14.5 hours or at 2:30am
That woman has a crazy look in her... uh eye.
Sounds like the DUmmies want a dictator.
Ha ha ha ha ha. Fully clothed for sure!
I applaud Coburn’s and DeMint’s effort here, but, it seems to be a little premature, being a Sanders amendment for implementing a single payer government system. It is very likely to pass, making it a bill killer if Lieberman is to be believed. The most likely outcome is Sanders will pull it.
