Coburn Forces Reading of 767-Page Single Payer Amendment
http://spectator.org/ ^ | 12.16.09 | By Philip Klein

Posted on 12/16/2009 10:10:26 AM PST by Maelstorm

Sen. Tom Coburn has just demanded that the Senate clerk read the single-payer amendment offered by Sen. Bernie Sanders -- and it's 767 pages.

Typically, Senators offering amendments will ask for unanimous consent to avoid reading the entire meausure, but all it takes is one Senator to object to demand its reading, and Coburn objected to Sanders attempt to dispense with the reading of the amendment.

To give you a sense of how this could delay things, it took the Senate clerk 18 minutes to get through the first 6 pages of the amendment, which were the table of contents. At this current pace, it will take 38 hours to get through the entire amendment.

You can follow along with the amendment here.

UPDATE: The body of the bill seems to be going faster than the table of contents, but it still looks likely to take at least 12 hours at this pace

Heard this earlier today when I was away from the computer and honestly laughed out loud. Thank you Senator! This is what you are paid for and you sure are coming through for us!
Now to get my Senators to join you, they are good men but I’m terribly ashamed they didn’t join immediately.

Way to go Tom, the good DR. from Oklahoma. You have to force them to read it and after every change they make I would make them read it again!!!

Think of Barney Frank and your idea becomes horrific.

"Then the Congresscritters will get an earful when they go home for the holidays. "

I'll be glad to skip my Christmas dinner to camp out outside their houses and ruin theirs...just give us their home addresses. Hell, the libs do it everyone, like Joe the Plumber, Bush administration lawyers, etc. We can do it too...by the busload.

And, if they DO pass it by Christmas, then we should show up at their door with even more people.

Those d**kheads are so afraid of the kenyan and his unions, that we're going to have to make the more afraid of us.

Eagles UP!

Durbin states now that “a senator has the right to withdraw his ammendment before action is taken.”

However can he do so before it’s completely read? Hummm

McConell just called them on the carpet for Sanders pulling the bill....rules say cannot allow this before the bill is read

Great job! Make those liberal sumbitches pay for this perfidy. Make 'em squirm.

Senates business done for the day. Hopefully both sides will address the reading of the ammendment issue tomorrow...they’ll have time to lock and load now.

I'd settle for this too. On a trampoline, doing handstands, gymnastic tumbling, whatever.

First time I saw that flick, I turned to my buddy and said, “I’d never get close enough. My **** would explode like a cheap novelty cigar.”

This is like Buford Pusser putting the judge’s office in the men’s room.

Yeah, that was one of my better pranks.

Sure hope Tom forces reading of the whole 2800 page mess. A pretty effective tactic, in my humble opinion.
