The Obama administration will begin moving towards reform of the nation's immigration laws early next year to give legal status to an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants.

An updated version of immigration laws could be supported by many members of congress only if border security is improved, according to Janet Napolitano — Homeland security Secretary — who was designated by US President Barack Obama to lead the administration's efforts to overhaul immigration laws.

It is not just the 12 to 20 million illegals who are already here, but it is also the 66 million to 100 million they can sponsor thru chain migration, i.e., family reunification. The country will be finished with the stroke of a pen if an amnesty is passed. Everything else, whether it is cap and tax or ObamaCare will just be rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

We have had mini amnesties, but the only real explicit one was the "one-time" amnesty signed by Reagan in 1986. The US Government estimated that one million would apply, but the real number turned out to be 2.7 million. In order to qualify, you had to have been here for five years, learn English, pay administrative costs, etc. There were also strict enforcement measures contained in the bill including fines against employers. Fraud abounded and the enforcement measures were never enforced.
