'Twilight Saga': Is 'New Moon' Selling Sex or Pushing Chastity?
ABC News ^ | 11/23/09 | DAN HARRIS

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" features long, steamy, smoldering gazes by handsome, shirtless young men who are vampires or werewolves.

Despite those lingering, lustful looks the film includes only four kisses and not a single sex scene.

Women and girls, who made up 80 percent of the opening weekend audience, said that is one reason "The Twilight Saga" appeals to them.

"I actually like that, the fact that they don't have bedroom scenes or anything," Gabrielle Rivera, 15, said.

Clearly the storyline is working. In the first three days, the box office raked in $140.7 million, according to studio estimates.

That places "New Moon" third behind "The Dark Knight" and "Spider-Man 3" on the highest-earning films for an opening weekend on the domestic charts.

The movies are based on the "Twilight" books, written by Stephanie Meyer.

Meyer, a Mormon, wrote her lead character, Edward, to be a chaste and noble protector of his love interest, Bella.

This may explain why the movie is a hit among so-called "Twilight Moms" who have described Edward as "the perfect man."

I’ll have to check it out. I pushed all my fiction novels aside to start on Sarah’s book. :)

She just looks unclean. Even in the movies, her hair looks greasy, and I just think she’s not really attractive.

Am I the only mom in the known western culture universe who thinks this obsession with the UNDEAD being foisted upon our teen girls is horribly perverse???!!!

****

No, you are not. The only reason I read this thread as far as your comment was because I was looking for such. I am just as appalled as you are.

My children, however, are grown men, so I don’t have to deal with this directly, but I find it very troubling for our culture.

My son and his girlfriend went to see this movie at her insistence. The theater audience was 80 percent female...

I second that thought. My daughters are caught up in this vampire thing too.

If one’s children are properly educated with the RIGHT messages by their parents...

And therein IS the problem...you have done so, I have done so, but from what I see in my community, parenting is just too damn hard. THAT'S why this crap becomes so popular, imo.

having read the books and seen both movies i disagree that that’s why it becomes so popular. they are engaging, period. freedom is a conservative value. i believe that we should be able to see and read what we like. so long as you parent your child properly they will be unscathed. so we should censor what should be written/seen because of those who fail to parent? what sort of free society is that? i don’t want anyone dictating what i can read or see based on their values, because in all likelihood it will be the liberals who attempt to decide for me.

Is that Kristen Stewart?

If she looked like that in the movies, I’d revise my opinion.

No you are not. I watched the first film and to be honest the sexual tension between the actors was quite intense and I can’t understand why parents would feed this to their tweens.

My daughter went to see New Moon and she said it was hard to even watch the movie with all the young girls there screaming and yelling. She said the worst moment was when the male lead was shown without a shirt, then all he!! broke loose in the audience. Like all the young females had never seen a guy without a shirt on, according to my daughter.

They are selling “sexy”, not necessarily “sex”.

The allure and the act can be separated (despite the best efforts of society to blur the line).

I think it’s actually trying to generate revenue, and they let others worry about what they think they are trying to do.

Ohhh, I see, it’s Alice. I liked the short hair. lol.

She’s prettier than Stewart, imho. Not that I suppose that’s relevant, but when I read the books, I pictured an attractive Bella, not a dirty Bella.

Is your opinion based solely on how she looks?

Whoa! Stop. the. bus.

Where did I say ANYTHING about censorship? Just because it’s not for my family that does not mean I advocate it be banned. I think it’s crap, my kids think it’s crap. Period. But so are a lot of books out there right now.
All I said is that obsession with undead critters/humans is morbid and sick.
My home has rules for decency...I’m sure yours does too. What I was saying about parenting is that too many folks just let the media raise their kids for the most part once they get to the difficult years. (tweens and up) They let their kids watch and read whatever just because it’s “popular” and “all their friends are doing it”. Those are the parents I’m steamed about. Garbage in/garbage out.
Books of this sort are not to my liking...nor my girls.
(Thank God!)
Ok, so you enjoyed the books and films...groovy.
I just don’t want to flip them my dime...and that is also my freedom to do so.
: )
Have a nice day
