It’s a big Democrat thing. They are so starving for power and $$$ payouts that they will vote lock step for anything....even if a majority of their constituants disagree. Once a Democrat is elected they go over to the “DARK SIDE” almost like they get their foreheads tatooed and are “lost souls” forevermore.

In fact, Reid may have to have a couple of Republicans even if his caucus holds firm. As the Hill reports, Reid can’t count on getting everyone into the chamber for this vote. Max Baucus, who helped put together a different version of the bill, left DC this week to be with his seriously-ill mother. Robert Byrd has been able to attend the Senate only occasionally this year due to his own health problems. Five other Senate Democrats had already arranged a “codel’ — an official travel event — and may not be able to stay in town.

Reid has to have 60 positive votes to overcome the threshold this weekend. If he can’t get that because of absences, Reid can’t even open debate on the bill — which makes his sudden schedule change all the more inexplicable. Why not wait until Reid can ensure that all of his colleagues will be on the floor to win the vote?

You need 2/3rd of Congress to over-ride Presidential Veto.

Obama is not hated enough yet to get us those kind of winning totals in Congress. This is his legacy now. It will be the straw that bankrupts America but they care little about that when they can blame Afghanistan and Iraq.

Very sad day for our children. It was the only hope we had to force a change now he gets to have his way with 51 Senators and the Moderates will vote no and go back to their contituents and claim ingnorance.

There are things in this legislation that even the Liberals would have to be against but hey... Obama made it clear. This accompishment is already written in my state of the Union address and I will not go a full year without doing something....

This vote just allows debate to begin. There will be another cloture vote to end debate - that vote will be the critical one where we need to convince Lieberman, or one other democrat to vote no.

I agree, but our idiots are not speaking out enough in the media to stop this power grab.

Both bills will be blended. In the end they will have the bill they originally wanted. It will be much worse than the original with blended Harry Kari and Pelosi deathcare bills. Cost I heard 10 trillion by the end of the 10th year.

They only need 51 to pass it now... thats the problem... They easily have 51 radical leftwingers who don’t care and are either not up for re-election or are in Liberal safe havens....

We are screwed... The fight is over.

Yes - this vote just allowed them to bring the bill to the floor and begin debate. They will need another cloture vote (60 votes) to end debate and move to a final vote (51 votes).

Like Ann Coulter said, people forgot what liberals were like. It took them a few years to forget but they know now.

It’s not over. This is not the vote Lieberman said he’d go against the Dems on. This vote allows the bill to be debated. We knew debate would occur, didn’t you?

Don't be so sure it is not all over.

If Reid pushes reconciliation he only needs 51 votes after todays vote.

Like there was ever any doubt that they’d have 60 votes

Actually no - this vote only allows them to start debate. They need another cloture vote (which requires 60 votes) to end debate and proceede to a final vote.

Yes. People this is NOT THE VOTE that dooms us. All this does is allow the senate to debate the bill. The Republicans will debate this forever(filibuster) thereby killing the bill unless the Dems come up with 60 votes to stop debate at some point in the future(weeks from now0.

” Isn’t that the one that Nelson and Leiberman have comitted to filibustering?”

They can “commit” to all they want; doesn’t mean they’ll follow through. I don’t trust a-one of them.

but our idiots are not speaking out enough in the media

On the contrary, I see people speaking out on the conservative point of view on health care every single day.

The backbenchers love to snipe at the people out front taking fire. Right now our side is 100% united which is pretty good. I don't think it's time to snipe at our guys. They're doing what they can and need to be prayed for and supported.

Hopefully the continued drumbeat, particularly in the districts of the Blue Dogs, will cause them to crumble when vote time comes. Seems to me those districts are the front line right now.

Unless, of course, the Dems take it to reconciliation. Then it’s a done deal.

Effing prostitute!

Someone should buy a billboard, put up photos of Lincold and Landrieu next to Snowe and Collins (in background) and beneath it: "Escorts for Sale"
