A southwest suburban woman has been charged with a hate crime for an alleged attack on a Muslim woman at a grocery earlier this month.
Amal Abusumayah was paying for groceries at the Jewel store at 17117 S. Harlem Ave. in Tinley Park on Nov. 7 when she felt a sharp tug on her headscarf. When she looked at who had pulled her hijab, she saw a woman who moments before had made a derogatory comment about Islam.
On Wednesday, Tinley Park police announced that Valerie Kenney, 54, has been charged with a hate crime, a felony that carries a possible sentence of up to three years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000.
"I was shaken up," Abusumayah told the SouthtownStar about the Nov. 7 assault. "This is my dignity and this is my religion."
Ahmed Rehab of the Chicago chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said his organization has reached out to the FBI to pursue federal charges.
Kenney is scheduled to appear in bond court in Bridgeview later Wednesday.
She's lucky she wasn't executed by the Czar of Islamic Love's Diversity Squad.
And causes your president to go round the world whimpering at length.
Yeah, I was thinking of that very incident...

Interesting to note that in the article I had initially read it said the guy had only been in the country a short time. In another article I just came across when searching for this, the guy has been running the kiosk for years:
“Coworkers told police that Hamid’s actions were out of the ordinary and that he had worked at the kiosk for years.”
vs.
“His family also said that he’s only been in the country a few months and is still learning the language and the laws.”
Probably some politics going on here. Tinley Park was just named by Businessweek as the top place in the country to raise kids. They don’t want to appear “racist.” I saw the accuser interviewed on tv in her home—looked like she had some bucks and could afford to lawyer-up.
Wasn’t Tinley Park just named the best place in the US to raise a family? Read that on Yahoo this morning......
Rats! 15 seconds!!!!!!! :)
Tugging on the scarf is battery, by definition. If there was a threat involved, then it's also assault.
Interesting how the media is wrong in so many ways. The guy who shot up a Jewish center here in Seattle killing one woman and injuring 6 others was just a misunderstanding, the guy was a bit unbalanced. Nothing to see here, move along.
p.s. - also like the media saying that that abortion doctor killing was a terrorist act but not the shooting at Ft. Hood.
This sounds like a case where “Jury Nullification” is definitely called for.
Maybe she tugged on the scarf to get her undivided attention.
Let your conscious be your guide. ;^)
No... it is a crime if you HATE them while you are assaulting them. See? It is the TOUGHT that counts.
If she had only pulled her scarf that would be simple battery.
But she said something bad too- so the thought police have grounds for arrest
I think you’re correct. It would be offensive touching.
Indeed. What crime?
Besides.....if this were a Baptist woman doing the same to a Catholic woman...would we even know about it? No.
Exactly.
The DA can disregard the legal principle of 'de minimis non curat lex' (the law doesn't bother with trifles) and apply a heavy hand wherever and whenever he sees fit no matter what cost to society.
Assault - threatening a person. Battery - physically touching a person (or their garments). Used by the JBT all the time.
Also the abortion doctor killing was Bill O’Reilly’s fault, but Mohammed’s call for jihad has nothing to do with Ft. Hood.
