It's emblazoned across the front page of USA Today, just underneath a subhead declaring Michael Jackson was, indeed, killed by a drug overdose: "Flu could infect half of USA." The article goes on to describe the predicted number of deaths expected in the U.S. (30,000 - 90,000 Americans) as well as the actions being taken by the government to protect Americans from the coming swine flu pandemic.
That advice reads sort of like a comic book of health care advice for kindergarteners: Wash your hands, cover your mouth if you cough and let "the grownups" take care of the rest by injecting you with a vaccine. Curiously absent from all the health advice being handed out on the swine flu by the White House, the CDC, the WHO and even the FDA is any mention of Vitamin D or other natural remedies that offer enormous protections from influenza infections.
The absence of this information from virtually all the advice being handed out to the American public is increasingly suspicious. If a pandemic flu is, indeed, threatening to infect half the U.S. population, and if most of the population is deficient in a nutrient known to strongly prevent influenza infections, wouldn't it make good sense to make a few announcements encouraging Americans to raise their vitamin D levels throughout the coming winter?
It is a well-known medical fact, of course, that influenza always gets worse during the winter months North of the equator and the summer months South of the equator (which are really called their "winter" months). This is because as sunlight hours lessen during the winter, the people living there become vitamin D deficient and are susceptible to influenza infections of all kinds.
The information resources backing this are easy to find. Even our own NaturalPedia.com website reveals a large amount of information on natural defenses against influenza (http://www.naturalpedia.com/influen...). NaturalNews.com, of course, offers a wealth of articles on Vitamin D (http://www.naturalnews.com/vitamin_...).
In the realm of peer-reviewed medical literature, searching Google Scholar for "influenza" and "vitamin D" returns tens of thousands of results (http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q...). In particular, one study appearing in these search results is entitled Epidemic influenza and vitamin D. It was published in 2006 in the journal Epidemiology and Infection (2006, 134:6:1129-1140 Cambridge University Press) and its abstract reads as follows:
In 1981, R. Edgar Hope-Simpson proposed that a 'seasonal stimulus' intimately associated with solar radiation explained the remarkable seasonality of epidemic influenza. Solar radiation triggers robust seasonal vitamin D production in the skin; vitamin D deficiency is common in the winter, and activated vitamin D, 1,25(OH)2D, a steroid hormone, has profound effects on human immunity. 1,25(OH)2D acts as an immune system modulator, preventing excessive expression of inflammatory cytokines and increasing the 'oxidative burst' potential of macrophages. Perhaps most importantly, it dramatically stimulates the expression of potent anti-microbial peptides, which exist in neutrophils, monocytes, natural killer cells, and in epithelial cells lining the respiratory tract where they play a major role in protecting the lung from infection. Volunteers inoculated with live attenuated influenza virus are more likely to develop fever and serological evidence of an immune response in the winter. Vitamin D deficiency predisposes children to respiratory infections. Ultraviolet radiation (either from artificial sources or from sunlight) reduces the incidence of viral respiratory infections, as does cod liver oil (which contains vitamin D). An interventional study showed that vitamin D reduces the incidence of respiratory infections in children. We conclude that vitamin D, or lack of it, may be Hope-Simpson's 'seasonal stimulus'.
Thanks for the ping. I bought some Samboucal and used it the other week when I developed a sore throat and cough. I got better shortly so glad it didn’t turn into the flu. Thanks for the warning. I was concerned about the cytokine storm stuff, but on some other papers they claim that is not a worry. I’m sure there are a variety of opinions on that. Common sense would seem that if one is concerned about too much antibodies, you wouldn’t take something that boosts the antibodies....
thanks, bfl
I know that alot of posters at PFI & Timebomb2000 have taken Samboucal according to their personal reports. I have read that some posters do believe that it helped them .I have heard of the cytokine storm risk too . I know there has been studies on it . I saw this link at PFI about
blackelderberry which is also known as Samboucal I think ?
sambucols website notes the site below, for background...
http://www.blackelderberry.info/index.cfm?id=376
3rd study down is of interest - in seasonal flu iirc, tamiflu cut the duration of illness by 1.5 days, vs elderberry that cut it by 3-4 days. also note that it impairs the ability of the virus to attach to cells, vs tamiflu that impairs the ability of the virus to get out of an infected cell - H vs N.
1. Number one on the list says Dr Blaylock, is to bring a cold pack with you and place it on the site of the injection as soon as you can, as this will block the immune reaction. Once you get home, continue using a cold pack throughout the day. If you continue to have immune reactions the following day, have cold showers and continue with the cold press.
2. Take fish oil. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), one of the omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil supplements, is a potent immune suppressant. If you take high dose EPA you will be more susceptible to infections, because it is a powerful immune suppressant. However, in the case of an immune adjuvant reaction, you want to reduce it. Studies show that if you take EPA oil one hour before injecting a very powerful adjuvant called lipopolysaccharide (LPS), it would completely block the ability of the LPS to cause brain inflammation. Take a moderate dose everyday and more if needed to tame a cytokine storm.
3. http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/f-w00/flavonoid.html
Flavonoids are third on the list, namely curcumin, quercetin, ferulic acid and ellagic acid, particularly in a mixture. The curcumin and quercetin in particular have been found to block the ability of the adjuvants to trigger a long-term immune reaction. If you take it an hour before the vaccination, it should help dampen the immune reactions says Dr Blaylock.
4. Vitamin E, the natural form that is high in gamma-E will help dampen the immune reactions and reduces several of the inflammatory cytokines.
5. An important ingredient on the list is Vitamin C at a dose of 1000 mg, taken four times a day between meals. It is a very potent anti-inflammatory and should be taken in a buffered form, not as absorbic acid, says Dr Blaylock.
6. http://www.naturalnews.com/002156.html
Also use astaxanthin as it's an anti-inflammatory. According to Dr Blaylock, fatal reactions to vaccines in aboriginal and African children occurred in those who were deficient in carotinoids, like astaxanthin. It is a good protection against the toxic effects of the vaccine.
7. Likewise, it was found that children who were deficient in zinc had a high mortality rate. Zinc is very protective against vaccine toxicity. (Do not use zinc mixed with copper however, as copper is a major trigger of free-radical generation according to Dr Blaylock).
8. Ensure you avoid all immune-stimulating supplements, such as mushroom extracts, whey protein and beta-glucan.
9. Take a multivitamin-mineral daily one that does not contain iron. This multivitamin-mineral is to make sure your body has plenty of B vitamins and selenium. Selenium, said Dr Blaylock, is very important for fighting viral infections and it reduces the inflammatory response to vaccines.
10. Magnesium citrate/malate 500 mg of elemental magnesium two capsules, three times a day.
11. What is very important is vitamin D3, which is the only 'vitamin' the body can manufacture from sunlight (UVB). It is a neural hormone, not really a vitamin says Dr Blaylock and helps if you are over-reacting immunologically by cooling down the reaction. Similarly, if you are under-reacting, it helps to boost your immune response. In addition it also protects against microorganism invasion.
Black people and those in colder climates are particularly deficient, so they will almost certainly require supplementation.
Dr Blaylock recommends that following vaccination it will help to keep the immune reaction under control if:
i) All children get 5,000 units a day for two weeks after the vaccine and then 2,000 a units a day thereafter;
ii) Adults get 20,000 units a day after the vaccine for two weeks, then 10,000 units a day thereafter;
iii) And with that adults should take 500-1000 mg of calcium a day and children under the age of 12 years should take 250 mg a day, as vitamin D works more efficiently in the presence of calcium.
12. Ensure you avoid all mercury-containing seafood or any other sources of mercury, as the heavy metal is a very powerful inducer of autoimmunity, is known to make people more susceptible to viral infections and will be in H1N1 vaccines.
13. Avoid the oils that significantly suppress immunity and increase inflammation - such as corn, safflower, sunflower, soybean, canola and peanut oils.
14. Drink very concentrated white tea at least four times a day. It helps to prevent abnormal immune reactions.
15. Pop parsley and celery in a blender and drink 8 ounces of this mixture twice a day. Dr Blaylock says the parsley is very high in a flavonoid called apigenin and that celery is high in luteolin. Both are very potent in inhibiting autoimmune diseases, particularly the apigenin. (My Note: I just heard Internist Dr. James Biddle say on TV yesterday that Cilantro BINDS MERCURY).
This is what TimeBomb 2000 web-site says about Samboucal / elderberries .
I know they have alot of poster’s using it !
I thought this thread was really interesting !

Influenza- prevention and treatment
One of our administrators asked me to try and put together a basic primer for influenza planning, trying to get it all into one, relatively concise, format.
I AM NOT AN EXPERT. Im a dairy farmer and herbalist who learned most of what I know on the practical side from trial and error, raising 4 kids without health insurance most of the time. Im not going to address every single remedy or treatment out there if I havent either used it personally for virus treatment or there isnt a good solid body of evidence (or both) that something works, Im not going to include it. Colloidal Silver is a good example- while Ive seen it work amazingly well on bacteria, I havent ever seen any real evidence that it works on viruses. It may but I cant swear to it. Hence, it wont be here.
Im not going to address all the definitions, etc again. Most reading this will have heard terms like cytokine storm enough to understand the basics. If not there is a ton of info out there, on this forum and elsewhere.
Also there is NO such thing as a completely safe remedy. Some folks can be allergic to elderberries or anything else.
THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!:
IF you currently take Rx meds or are under a doctors care for a chronic medical condition, PLEASE, CHECK WITH THEM if you have any questions. Also, if you are pregnant, nursing or may become pregnant, do not take ANYthing mentioned here until youve at least followed up with your own research! If your doctor disagrees with you taking anything either follow their instructions, or change their mind with facts . No one here can be responsible for anything that happens if you follow any advice here without doing your own due diligence.
All that said there is nothing mentioned in this essay which has any of the potentially dangerous side effects which are common to TamiFlu and other Rx meds.
First PREVENTION. Always the best line of defense for any illness. Handwashing, preferably with soap and water, works. Since its nearly impossible to avoid touching contaminated surfaces if youre out in public, its going to be easier to train yourself to not touch your mouth, nose or eyes until after youve washed your hands.
Eyes??? YES... which brings me to a subject I rarely see mentioned: CONTACT LENSES. IF you wear them, you may want to consider switching to eyeglasses for the duration of the epidemic, at least when youre out away from home. If youre one of the fortunate ones who never has the slightest problem once your lenses are in place, youre probably fine. But I see so many contact wearers poking at their eyes, trying to get an eyelash out, pulling out saline bottles, etc.. and you can as easily absorb the virus through your eyes as you can through your mouth and nose. Glasses can also provide a small bit of protection.. if someone coughs or sneezes, droplets which may have landed in your eyes will land on your glasses instead. (providing you with clear vision so you can then sucker punch the thoughtless idiot who just potentially contaminated you! LOL!)
You may want to take further steps, depending on how seriously youre taking this. Things like saving one pair of shoes for outside ONLY and stepping out of them before you enter your home. Id keep my work shoes that I wear at work, or shopping, in the car. Remember things like your purse or briefcase if you set it down on the elevator floor, or a store counter, you MAY have virus on the bottom surface. If you then carry it into your home and set it on the kitchen counter, or your bedroom dresser you get the picture.
Masks N95 are better than nothing, and although they can provide a false sense of security if they arent fitted properly (and if you then relax because youre protected), they may help protect you in situations where people are in close quarters- elevators, busses, etc.
Supplements and meds:
Because of the potential for a cytokine storm with this particular flu strain, if you take any supplements now for immune system boosting (especially Echinacea or other herbs meant to strengthen your immune system) Id STOP taking them for now. There are some other things you can take which can help prevent you from catching flu or which are known to mitigate the severity of the illness:
Vitamin E
400IU daily
Best started early (NOW)
Shown to reduce Influenza A and B activity if supplemented before exposure. Treatment can reduce inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF, while increasing interferon and non-inflammatory IL-2.
For treatment if symptoms appear, increase to 800 IU daily for the duration
Garlic- Not just for social distancing!
RAW is best. Probably the easiest way to take it is to cut up raw cloves into capsule size pieces, and swallow like you would a pill. You could also chop raw garlic and stuff it into gelatin capsules and swallow. Or, simply chew the raw cloves- if you can!
The odorless garlic preparations available commercially are better than using cooked garlic, but are a poor second to using raw fresh cloves.
Dosage: 1-4 cloves daily. ( ¾ tsp to 1 ½ tsps chopped fresh daily)
Garlic is reported to stimulate immunity, including macrophage activity, natural killer and killer cells, and LAK cells, and to increase the production of IL-2, TNF, and interferon-gamma.
Allicin (one of the active principles in garlic) has been shown to reduce the production of inflammatory cytokines.
Zinc.. best obtained from foods (meat, shellfish, pumpkin seeds, wheat germ) Supplement with NO MORE than 25 mgs daily, unless you are sure youre deficient.
Vitamin C 1 gram daily (adults- prevention). Increase to 2 grams daily (adults, treatment)
NAC /day to prevent the formation of cystein renal stones.
Prevention: 600 mgs daily
N-Acetyl Cysteine
A mucolytic, anti-oxidant. Loosens mucus, increases blood gas exchange and available oxygen. If you take this, you must drink 6-8 glasses of water. You also MUST take Vitamin C if youre taking NAC (without sufficient Vitamin C, L-cysteine can change to a toxic amino acid, l-cystine). It also REQUIRES sufficient zinc in your system.
TREATMENT: 600 mg/2-3 x’s/day
Resveratrol- this is a compound found in red wine (the highest amounts are in Pinot Noir), raw peanuts, and in two herbs- Baikal skullcap and Japanese knotweed. It strongly disrupts the viral replication process. It must be taken very early- preferably within 6 hours of first symptoms, and often- every 2-4 hours. For someone who is actually sick, sipping 1-2 ounces Pinot Noir wine every 2-4 hours works well. If you need to go to work, drive, etc, snacking on freshly boiled (just before eating) peanuts or taking capsules
Elderberry (Sambucus nigra species)
This is still the mainstay of my anti-influenza fighting arsenal. After sifting through too many monographs, studies and abstracts, my PERSONAL conclusion is that the risk of a cytokine storm isnt increased enough for me to NOT use elderberry. The key is to start taking elderberry (in whatever form you choose- my SYRUP recipe follows) EARLY and OFTEN. Take a small (1/2 to ¼ of the treatment dose) preventative dose if the virus is in your area, and then if you begin to feel any symptoms at all, ramp it up to the full treatment dose.
(for infants, DO NOT use the honey-based recipe. Use the recipe at the very bottom, with sugar. This is due to the tiny (but non-zero) risk of botulism from honey in infants.)
Elderberry Syrup Recipe
7 cups elderberry juice
8 ¾ cups honey
3 cups 80 proof vodka
Warm the elderberry juice to hot, but not boiling temp between 150 and 180°F should be plenty. Stir in the honey and stir until its completely dissolved and blended.
Remove from the heat, and stir in the vodka.
Pour into sterile jars or bottles (sterilize them by boiling for 5-10 minutes in boiling water, then let drip dry upside down until filling)
Cap and LABEL. Store in a cool DARK place (or bottle in dark brown glass)
Standard dose for adults would be:
Prophylaxis (prevention) 1 tablespoon 2x a day. If there is active flu in your office or family, double that, or take more often.
Treatment: 1-2 tablespoons every 3-4 hours
Children under 12: half the adult dose
Toddlers and infants: Talk to your doctor! But, lacking that, 1 tsp at similar intervals to the adult dose should be adequate.
There is NO way to overdose on this! Put it in juice, jello, pour it over ice cream- any way you can get the kids to take it is fine.
Alternatives:
If you do not want to use any alcohol in the syrup, use
7 cups elderberry juice
14 cups honey
Proceed as above, ignoring the reference to the vodka.
If you dont want to use honey (probably best to NOT use it for babies under 1 year)
7 cups elderberry juice
11 ½ cups sugar
Green Tea Catechins demonstrate anti-viral activity.
This would be a good way to take your elderberry in a cup of green tea. If youre congested and symptomatic, probably hot green tea with elderberry syrup and a good dollop of honey and lemon would be a multi-purpose drink providing the anti-viral activity of the tea, fluids, and the throat soothing properties of the lemon and honey. The hot tea should help loosen mucous as well.
Essential Fatty acids (immune MODULATOR, potent anti-inflammatory action) GLA is in Borage seed oil or Evening Primrose Oil, EPA from cold pressed fish oil.
Prevention & Treatment: 1-2 capsules each (or a combo product) daily.
ESSENTIAL OILS The two essential oils Id use religiously in a vaporizer or cool mister are eucalyptus globulus and Peppermint. Both have potent expectorant effects (an expectorant loosens/ thins mucous and encourages the body to cough it out and expel it). Eucalyptus has anti inflammatory effects (and reduces inflammatory cytokines) as well as anti-fungal and anti-bacterial effects. SOME folks can be sensitive to the strong smells essential oils produce use to tolerance. Start with 3-5 drops in a vaporizer, and add until you can smell the oils strongly, but not at overwhelming levels.
COMFORT CARE The truth is, the outcome of even serious illnesses CAN be affected positively by simple, but effective TLC (Tender Loving Care). That means keeping the patient comfortable as much as possible. Treat muscle pain, aches, headache with appropriate OTC pain meds. If possible, allow them to sleep as much as they can- if you can, fit meals, drinking fluids and taking the supplements, etc in while they are awake. REST HEALS. At the same time, you dont want them to go for too long without taking in fluids, so you need to use some common sense.
Many doctors now feel that fever actually serves a valuable purpose in helping the body fight off illness. However, an extremely high fever can be dangerous in itself. Again, you want a balance- if the patient is comfortable, not suffering shaking chills and their temp isnt above 102.5, dont give aspirin or acetaminophen JUST to treat the fever. (and DO NOT GIVE aspirin to children under 18 with this or any other viral illness)
One last thought:
RECORD KEEPING! Even though you may only have one or two patients, the MINUTE you start increasing dosages of any meds, start keeping a notebook. Keep a separate page for each person. Write down symptoms, vital signs when you check them, FLUID AMOUNTS TAKEN IN, and what meds/supplements they took. Write date and time, every time. You hopefully will end up only with a personal family memento of a nasty flu bug. But, if one of your patients ends up needing hospital treatment, your record may give them a valuable history. And it will save you from forgetting doses, overdosing accidentally, or worrying needlessly whether or not you remembered a dose.
Our Personal Treatment Plan
Use as a base for your own, adjusting as needed for your own familys needs. Im still working this out in my mind for our family, but this is what Ive come up with so far:
First anyone who begins to run a fever during an active influenza season or pandemic will immediately start taking treatment doses of Elderberry, NAC, Vitamin C and E, and Zinc.
We have checked normal vital signs on family members, and hence know whether or not a temp of 99.8 is an actual fever or simply a normal late afternoon temp on someone working in the sun. (for me, since I run a normal of around 96.8 that would be a high fever)
If the patient shows any worsening of symptoms- begins to have chills, is noticing a bad headache or body aches, etc they WILL BE PUT TO BED. This IS one of the most important things you can do, and something you need to discuss with your loved ones NOW! We, as a society, are so used to taking something to knock symptoms down so we can keep working, that its not funny. And it is dangerous! We get away with it now because of our incredibly advanced medical system and the availability of potent antibiotics which have been able to treat most cases of secondary bacterial pneumonia many of which were avoidable with sensible care.
Im planning on treating a pandemic strain of influenza as if we dont HAVE that medical system or any of the advances since 1918 because I believe that within the first 2 weeks of a serious pandemic (the current strain is NOT that serious- at least not yet) we wont have access to almost anything they didnt have in 1918, because our hospitals, pharmacies, etc are going to be completely overwhelmed.
I have plenty of things like small games, reading material, etc to keep someone who is bedbound (by MY decree in situations like this, my word as chief medical officer of our family- is law) but feels well enough to do more than sleep, occupied.
For anyone in the danger age group for cytokine storm (pretty much all my grown kids), a fever plus any secondary symptoms (body aches, headache, or ANY respiratory symptoms) will immediately get them put on the full dose of elderberry/NAC/Vitamins, PLUS Ill add curcumin and resveratrol.
Patients will be strongly encouraged to eat small amounts of whatever appeals to them, and to drink a MINIMUM of 2-3 quarts of fluids. To encourage this, we have a stash of several different juices, green tea, and herb teas. Ive got a bunch of home canned chicken soup, and at the first hint that someone may be getting ill, Ill make a couple batches of pudding and stash it in the fridge. People with children may want to have stuff like jello on hand.
Well set up at least one bedroom as the sick room at this point, it will be the master bedroom, because it has an attached bathroom, and is only a few steps from the kitchen, but can be closed off if necessary. Everything used in the sick room will be put into heavy garbage bags, and sealed until someone has time to deal with it safely linens, etc, will be sealed up until someone can wash them with bleach (wearing gloves and mask while handling them). Well use disposable cups and dishes, and will remove all used items plus dirty tissues, etc at least twice a day. I have some disinfectant bleach wipes which will be stashed in the bathroom, and used to wipe down sink and toilet handles, etc, daily.
I have a stash of older blankets and sheets which Ill use on the bed and Ill then decide whether to wash or burn them, depending on how things go. Because pillows tend to be comfort items and something people have personal preferences about, Ive thought about how to keep them from being contaminated. I have several hypoallergenic pillow cases stashed, to seal the inside pillow itself from contamination. Ill use old pillowcases for the top layer, again so I can choose whether its more prudent to wash and disinfect them (a couple days on the clothesline in the sun should be sufficient) or burn them.
I will keep a vaporizer going in the sick room with the essential oils mentioned above, unless it bothers the patient. In which case, Ill move it to just outside the sickroom door.
Vital signs will be monitored at least 2x a day more often if necessary. That means temperature, respirations and blood pressure, as well as a visual inspection of color. Normal respirations in a healthy adult are between 14 and 20 per minute. Fast, shallow breaths mean respiratory distress (childrens normal numbers are different if you have children, youll want to look up normal vital signs in children). If someone is showing signs of increased respirations, check their nail beds and lips... a bluish tinge means they are short of oxygen. (Once you get to this point, youre well into the call your doc or go to the ER NOW! territory. If the pandemic news is attracting a lot of attention, OR if your hospital is packed with ill patients, if you decide you need hospital care, you should probably call an ambulance- it may be the only way to ensure that you have a chance of getting care. Obviously, Id encourage everyone to NOT use an ambulance or hospital services unless you really believe its life or death).
VERY important get ALL YOUR SUPPLIES purchased and stashed someplace safe NOW. Maybe this will blow over or maybe it will come roaring back this fall even stronger and more dangerous. Im reading FAR too many posts by people who are just now looking for elderberries, or masks, or hand sanitizer. Good grief, people! I can understand looking for MORE of these basics, because youve suddenly realized youve got 2 dozen DGI relatives who are going to come looking for you to help them. But every household should have at least a small, basic supply of these items. Elderberry syrup or extract is a staple around here- I cant imagine NOT having it around to use the minute someone shows early signs of a viral illness.
And if necessary (depending on your personal situation) buy the stuff and HIDE it. Masks and gloves can easily be borrowed for all sorts of household uses, and thats fine but if you have family members who habitually borrow preps without mentioning it you need a pandemic stash which is NOT TO BE TOUCHED, unless they plan on going out and buying replacements for what theyve used PDQ.
And last, but certainly not least- remember, even in 1918, the vast majority of people did survive. Many who didnt, didnt die of influenza they died from secondary factors like hunger and cold, when family members couldnt go out to get food or firewood. Those deaths were preventable and if this strain gets stronger, well see deaths which didnt have to happen this time too. Make sure your family isnt part of that tragic and completely unnecessary statistic!

Elderberry Extract Recipe for H5N1
Elderberry Extract Recepie (Dried Elderberries - Sambuca Negra)
Fleataxi
Note: This information has been garnered from several forums, and herbal experts. I’m NOT an expert, but I did go to a Holiday Inn once!
Fill a qt. canning jar 1/3 full of dried elderberries (1/2 full if using fresh berries)
fill the jar with cheap 80/90 proof unflavored vodka or brandy,
cap jar, shake, and store in a cool dark cabinet for 7-10 days.
Strain berries, and fill jar until full from another jar so each jar contains 1 quart of extract - you’ll need 3 quarts per person for treatment, and a spare quart for preventative dosages.
For those that need more info - here is a link to the
documentation and lab studies on the stuff
http://www.herbalgram.org/files/pdfs/elderberry-scr.pdf
Link to site to buy dried Elderberries by the pound
Go to Products, Scroll down to the E’s and select
Whole Elderberries @ $5.30/pound.
A pound makes 3-4 quarts of Elderberry Tincture.
I’ve read the report. There are two recommended dosages.
One is for “prevention” which is 2 tablespoons / day.
The other one is “intensive” which corresponds to 2 tablespoons 4x / day.
In either case, you’re going to go through a LOT of tincture.
That 4 oz bottle of Sambucol is only one day’s worth at the
“intensive” dosage!!!
Here’s some of “the math” on this.
The short answer is that if you wait until you have the
flu then take the elderberry as a treatment
(assuming 2 tablespoons 4x / day for 10 days)
you’re going to need over a quart per person.
To make Ederberry Syrup for children and recovering Alcoholics:
Gently heat extract over lowest heat that barely boils mixture to cook off Alcohol, which boils way below 212- so take it easy, heat hurts the alkaloids in the extract!
When all alcohol is gone, measure remainder and add enough cooled simple sugar syrup to replace lost volume. Only make what you can use in 1-2 weeks since it doesn’t store well in the refrigerator.
My preferred dosage for adults is 1oz 3 times per day until 1 quart has been administered. Children should be dosed based on body weight.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN TINCTURES
Here’s some good info I found on the web re-making your own herbal tinctures:
Annie Putin
http://www.kcweb.com/herb/tincture.htm
Here’s some good info I found on the web re-making your own tinctures:
THE ITEMS YOU WILL NEED:
Dried or fresh herbs in powdered or cut form.
80 -100 proof vodka or rum (NEVER use rubbing, isopropyl or wood alcohol).
Wide-mouthed glass jars with lids (mason jar or equivalent).
Unbleached cheesecloth or muslin.
Labels and markers.
STEP BY STEP
You should plan to start your tinctures on the day of the new moon and let them sit at least 2 weeks until the full moon - this adds a natural drawing power.
Pour the amount of herb you desire into the glass jar and slowly pour the alcohol until the herbs are entirely covered. Then add an inch or two of additional liquid.
Seal the jar tightly so that the liquid cannot leak or evaporate. Put the jar in a dark area or inside a paper bag.
Shake the jar every day.
When ready to bottle, pour the tincture through a cheesecloth into another jar or dark colored tincture bottle. Squeeze the saturated herbs, extracting the remaining liquid until no more drips appear.
Close the storage container with a stopper or cap and label.
ADDITIONAL TIPS ON TINCTURES
200 grams dried or 300 grams of fresh herbs (chopped) to one liter of liquid is needed.
Rum helps hide the taste of bitter herbs.
Distilled water, vinegar or glycerol can be used to make nonalcoholic tinctures.
Standard dosage is 1 teaspoon, 1-3 times daily, diluted in tea, juice or water.
Tinctures can last up to two years when stored in a tightly closed container.
A wine press or juicer may be used to extract liquid from the herbs.
Several herbs can be combined into a tincture formula.

Ordering Info:
I ordered the elderberries (1 lb. ) a couple of days ago, at herbalcom.com . I also ordered some other things. Here is a list of what I ordered and prices:
Goldenseal root powder - 1 - $21.50 - $21.50
001179 - Elder berries whole - 1 - $5.30 - $5.30
001726 - Echinacea purp. root powder - 1 - $12.25 - $12.25
009006 - Essential oil, Oregano - 1 - $12.55 - $12.55
009117 - Flax seed oil gel caps - 1 - $5.20 - $5.20
009115 - Omega 3 gel caps - 1 - $4.80 - $4.80
009126 - E-200 gel caps - 1 - $4.85 - $4.85
Is making the tincture the best way to utilize the elderberries? As for the echinacea powder and goldenseal root powder, I’m thinking maybe I’ll use them in tea. The types/forms of echinacea offered varied in price a lot. There was some cheaper and one form $23 or $24/lb. I settled on this mid priced form.

It is designed to keep a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids) alive — meet their basic nutritional requiremeents for 2 weeks — and is composed almost entirely of normal foods like you would be able to buy at a grocery store. (Most people starting to prep don’t want to be sent to feed stores and special-order catalogs). The items cost about $100 to $120 or less if bought on sale.
Recipes that can be made just from the ingredients in the box can be found here:

Thank you for the information.
Very strange. Friday before last I was reading Wikipedia entry on Southern Comfort, at that time it said s.c. was known as Redneck’s Nyquil - 4 shots can cure the flu, 9 shots can cure anything. Went back today and that little tidbit was gone.
Anyway, I going to try the 4 shot thing if I do get the flu!
” Those younger than puberty don’t seem to have this mature immunity, and don’t seem to be experiencing cytokine storm related deaths.”
Not necessarily true with this H1N1 and not true in cases of norovirus infections in children with O blood type.
One of my daughters had a cytokine storm at age 9. It was triggered by the Norovirus back in 2002 and her life was saved by the world class A.I Dupont Hospital for Children’s ER & Respiratory wing.
Do you by any chance know if its okay to do these amounts of the D-3 if one has cold symptoms?
Four of my friends came down with the same Bad Cold Symptoms on the same day, and 2 were found a few days later to have bronchitis.
My symptoms ALMOST vanish for a few hours if I take 5OOO IU of the D-3, but they only "almost" vanish and then all return and I'm back in bed.
I do NOT want to get pneumonia nor bronchitis, and I have no lung pang or difficulty breathing, mainly I'm sleeping and/or sniffling, sneezing & chilled.
No fever, no muscle aches - have NO idea if any of us had H1N1....
So I can do HIGH doses of D-3, up to 30,000 IU daily with no adverse effects until I am well?
Thanks.

It’s actually a hat trick, if you can pull it off. You will get from 20-30,000 IU of Vitamin D from 15 minutes of sunlight on a lot of skin. However, there is a delay before it gets into your bloodstream of perhaps two days. So you get the sunlight, and *also* take 30,000 IU to close the gap, until the natural stuff kicks in. Importantly, you must find out if you have any sensitivity to Vitamin D first, as a few people react to the pill form with as little as 3,000 IU.
Unless you are in one of those places where it is mostly dark, cold and with little sun. It would be a very good idea to get a natural light sun lamp if you live there.
When you have a cold or the flu, several of your vitamins can become quickly depleted, not just Vitamin D. So it is good to take some Vitamin C, and a *normal* dose, *no more*, of Vitamin A, because you can most certainly take too much Vitamin A.
I would personally suggest having some Wheat Germ, as well, because it has some of the less common nutrients, such as Vitamin E, folate (folic acid), phosphorus, thiamine, zinc and magnesium, as well as essential fatty acids and fatty alcohols.
From there, the rules are different, depending on whether your infection is viral or bacterial. An URT and sinus bacterial infection often shows up in green or yellow mucous. In either case, be mentally ready to take it to a doctor if it suddenly becomes acute, you experience breathing problems, or you start to cough up blood.
If it is just a regular disease, you might drop down to 6,000 IU of Vitamin D a day, in two or three doses. Save the really big doses for when it is a dangerous disease, not just an annoying one.
Still tired, but no obvious cold symptoms this morning.
I'm considering getting one bottle of DHEA, just to see if it might "jump start" my internal engines, LOL.... yawn/yawn/yawn
My main concern, however, is as you note -- am I developing pneumonia or bronchitis via this malingering cold, and if so, when do I *have* to see a doc about it? I hate to go to the doctor's office when I'm under the weather, as who knows what all one might get infected with in the waiting rooms? LOL
If your breathing becomes difficult, or you develop a rattle, or experience a sudden drop in energy level, it would be a good idea to see a doctor. Other symptoms are less obvious, so it has to be a judgment call.
Well, it’s difficult to tell about the energy level, it’s extremely low -— but the cold was so bad I was taking alot of pseudophedrine, and while it dries out the sinuses, it creates a false sense of wide awake alertness -— I stopped taking any of the Sudafed 3 days ago, so that alone could account for how exhausted I feel, ya know??
.....In adults, taking 1250 μg (50,000 IU)/day for several months can produce toxicity. Vitamin D toxicity can occur iatrogenically when hypoparathyroidism is treated too aggressively (see Fluid and Electrolyte Metabolism: Treatment).
Symptoms
The main symptoms result from hypercalcemia. Anorexia, nausea, and vomiting can develop, often followed by polyuria, polydipsia, weakness, nervousness, pruritus, and eventually renal failure. Proteinuria, urinary casts, azotemia, and metastatic calcifications (particularly in the kidneys) can develop.
Diagnosis
Hypercalcemia plus risk factors or elevated serum 25(OH)D levels
A history of excessive vitamin D intake may be the only clue differentiating vitamin D toxicity from other causes of hypercalcemia......
I take it everyday.
If you have hypercalcemia, you may have few or no signs and symptoms, particularly if your hypercalcemia is mild.
More severe hypercalcemia symptoms may include:
Nausea and vomiting
Loss of appetite
Excessive thirst
Frequent urination
Constipation
Abdominal pain
Muscle weakness
Muscle and joint aches
Confusion
Lethargy and fatigue
The amount of excess calcium in your blood isn't necessarily related to the severity of your signs and symptoms. For example, older people are more likely to have pain and weakness in their muscles.
When to see a doctor
Contact your doctor if you develop signs and symptoms that may indicate hypercalcemia, such as excessive thirst, frequent urination and abdominal pain.
