NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A school resource officer had to go to the hospital Tuesday after an 8-year-old student attacked him with a pen.
The incident started at Dupont-Hadley Middle School where some students and staff said they saw the boy kicking a dog.
SRO Randy Fowler caught up with the boy at his nearby home, and placed him in handcuffs.
That's when Fowler said the boy's mother, 31-year old Rachel Swafford, pushed her son inside and scuffled with the officer.

The apples don’t fall far from the tree.
Shaving the head and a good whipping would be sufficient punishment for this creature.
Arrested for kicking a dog????
What’s going here?
You can legally stick a fork in a baby’s head but if you kick a dog some school “officer” will come to your house to arrest you?
Am I the only one who sees this as wacky?
Not that I’m advocated cruelty to animals, but they are still just dogs!
One of Obama's finest? I'd lay odds on it...
If schools ban swords, why do they permit pens?
“The pen is mightier than the sword” :-)
At least we know the family isn't starving by mom's looks.
Apparently, you’ve never heard the saying ‘Two wrongs don’t make a right’. Of course your two comparisons aren’t anywhere near close to being comparable, but that doesn’t make them mutually exclusive from both being despicable acts. And yes, your statement does seem to advocate cruelty to animals.
Trying to make a moral equivalence of every action to abortion is disingenuous and makes your voice muted to anyone listening.
This is not about abortion.
This is about cruelty in a child and a parent who supports that cruelty. This child needs to understand what he did is not acceptable to this society. The mother needs that lesson as well, apparently.

1. Boy seen abusing dog.
2. SRO goes to talk to boy (not arrest him.)
3. Boy stabs SRO with pen.
4. SRO restrains boy by handcuffing him.
5. Mom comes out.
How to keep down college costs: raise a kid who’ll be in jail when he’s 18.
His crime was kicking a dog. The proper response is “Hey kid, knock that off.” Not go all Rambo and harass his mother and arrest the kid. Sure the kid stabbed the officer but that’s because he witnessed the officer attacking his mother.
A little perspective is in order here.
First, it’s just a dog.
Second, a mother was assaulted. Unfortunately, when police get all rough and tough they are never charged with assault.
Third, I did say it was just a dog, right? Good. That’s sound advice that needs repeating.
Fourth, the proper response to a kid kicking a dog is “Hey kid, knock that crap off.”
In a society where 4,000 babies per day are aborted we’re all uptight about a dog getting kicked. This is a sign of serious spiritual confusion and moral decay. It’s a dog and only a dog.
I have never laughed so hard than during the SNL sketch where the "fake" Trebek and Connery were playing Jeopardy and the title of the category was "THE PEN IS MIGHTIER" and Connery said that he would take "The penis mightier" for $100. I almost died laughing ... childish but still funny
The actual sequence apparently went as follows:
1. Boy seen abusing dog
2. Officer handcuffs boy
3. The mom comes out and attacks the SRO.
4. The kid somehow gets out of the cuffs
5. Kid attacks officer with pen.
IF (if if if if!!!) the article is correct about that sequence, then the SRO would seem to be guilty of escalating the situation by cuffing the kid.
The mom's response is natural, as is the kid's.
There is probably more to the story where the cuffs are concerned. Or the news story has the sequence wrong. But as written .... the SRO is the bad guy here.
Swashbuckling Penmanship!
i think you need to reread the story....the sro caught up with the boy and put him in cuffs...mother came out and scuffled with sro...boy slipped cuffs and stabbed sro....
thank you for your post. Your message is appreciated.
Did you read the story, or are you just one who conjectures what happened?
The officer did tell the kid to quit kicking the dog and come over to him. The child was likely going to get a stern talking to.
The child then ran from the officer. Running from law enforcement is never a good thing, something this child was not taught. The officer in question was there as a truancy officer as well. The child was not in class when he should have been and then ran away from the school. The truancy officer’s job is to prevent truancy.
The officer caught the youngster, and yes, put handcuffs on him. Considering this kid was kicking a dog, running from the officer, and probably putting up a fight, I don’t think handcuffs are completely out of order.
The mother then opens the door and pushes her kid inside and starts assaulting the officer. The kid gets free from the cuffs and stabs the officer.
I don’t see a moment where the officer went over the line. But I see several instances where the child and the mother went over the line.
And this still has nothing to do with abortion.
